It is scone to rhyme with cone for me. DH is a scon-pronouncer and actually had the nerve to tell the kids I was wrong. I exploded at him for that as, actually, it's regional and not being from round here, my region just happens to be different! Neither is wrong, just different.

And sorry I missed your post too, chocolate. I hope that your sister is getting good care and you're looking after yourself too. Flowers I'm so sorry it's not great news.

'Uck' here. I associate 'oo' with some areas of the north.

And, you're wrong, flouncy. It's regional, there is no right or wrong! Regional variation doesn't = wrong, in my eyes.

Though calling trousers 'pants' is a weird NW thing. And tea for dinner. That's also odd. But regional, so I grit my teeth (and have trained the kids to do it my way!).

I say ‘tea’ for dinner Fluffy!

Fanny they’re okay, still sniffly bless them. But I’m just making sure they have lots to eat and drink and hopefully they’ll be better soon. They’ve had everything under the sun since going to nursery bless them.

Book rhymes with look and hook and scone rhymes with gone round here. Neither uck or oo for book somewhere in between Grin more like eugh-k Grin It's amazing any of us learn to spell!

Chocolate Thanks I hope you get news about a treatment plan soon. Look after yourself.

Fluffy growing up I was an 'ooo' person - after all people don't say 'snucker' when they are talking about the game that Steve Davis played, do they? However after 30 years away from Liverpool I'm now an 'uck' person when it comes to books and cooks etc. I'm still a scon person though. Grin

Fanny I grew up with 'kecks' too although it tends to be something I use with DH only as the kids give us this face Hmm if we go Scouse on them. 'Trainees' for trainers seems to be a totally unique to Liverpool expression.

I mostly use dinner to mean our hot evening meal but I have been known to use tea. I must be bilingual 😂

Wheelie your biscuit dough seems to resemble our pastry.

I went for a bath , pronounced like arth as in arthritis, to get back to a thousand ,slight exaggeration , posts 🤪😁.
DH is cleaning bless him downstairs, instead of watching the Scotland game because in his words it's a walkover to Scotland and boring 🙄. Russia's loss is my gain 🤪😁😂. l am supposed to be doing up here, bedroom , but l am whiling away the morning 😀 talking to yous 👏😇
Better shift speak LTR 😁

DaveTheGhost · 09/10/2019 09:31

Fanny it’s breakfast, dinner and tea for me. Book is ‘uck’. We also use a tuthbrush and tuthpaste. My dads from the Midlands and my mums from up north, so I’m just a bit of a mess😂.

CrazyBaubles · 09/10/2019 09:42

Wheels I think DH doesn't want to see MIL at Christmas because it doesn't feel very festive there. As much as he's a bit of a humbug he secretly likes everyone being excited around him and MIL doesn't do that - they have to do the same animal care and chores so it's just another day.

I love your version of pigs in blankets. When we were in America a year or so ago we ordered fried chicken and it came with a scone type thing. I thought it was odd but it was really tasty.
Would you consider trying the UK version?

Firefly I think we'll have a look and make a plan based on what we can get for dinner. I'm not averse to a non traditional dinner (we went to a Chinese for Christmas dinner when we spent Christmas in Prague).

Chocolate sometimes getting the frustration out by sobbing is the best thing for you. I can only imagine the stress for you at the moment, look after yourself.

I've attached a pic of an advent calendar for you - mostly because I love it (it's a bit pricey though)

dave I'm joining you for the duvet day. I'm hoping I'm on the mend but I'm so exhausted.
Do you do anything crafty? I find crochet distracts me from anxiety quite well.

I never say dinner. I have lunch and tea 🤷‍♀️ (although DSIS recently told me she thinks I say lunch to sound posh 😂)

MrsMad I say scones to rhyme with cones and DH says scons. He doesn't eat them though so I ignore his opinion altogether Xmas Grin

I would love to try M&S Christmas food but DH prides himself in making everything himself and wouldn't consider it 🙄

Where are you from originally Fluffy? I'm not sure why, I assumed you lived close to where you were brought up.

fanny it's 'uck' here too. Only person I know who uses 'ooo' is MILs husband and it's his accent (he's from Yorkshire).

BIL is from just outside Wrexham and SIL lives there now. His accent sounds like a medley to me - part north wales, part Liverpool and part something else which is entirely their own.
We use 'tuth brush' etc though.

I am continuing with my online Christmas present research / shopping. I've usually started shopping by now so even though I have plenty of time I'm getting a bit stressed.

Am at the Pearl clutching stage 😂 , secretly envious, of the fish finger beans & chips for Christmas dinner 😁
Crazy that is a beautiful advent l love it! Thank you for showing us. I also think it is possible, in my head at least, to make that Blue Peter style out of a cardboard box! In my dreams 🤣
Done the feelthy bathroom
Dusted/polished bedroom
Now to Hoover said bedroom and hang the washing out 😇

Mrsmadevans · 09/10/2019 10:22

Am shunning the pronunciation talk because l will get earworm 🤪
Speak LTR m'dears 🤗

Mrsmadevans · 09/10/2019 10:22

Too late am already stuck on Scone , Scon 😁😂🙄🙄

NoWordForFluffy · 09/10/2019 10:39

I'm from the East Midlands, Crazy. Nowhere near here; as far from the sea as you can get (and where Woolly is now; we swapped!).

Dinner is your main hot meal. So you'd have either breakfast, lunch and dinner or breakfast, dinner and tea. Your 'light' (likely sandwiches / soup-type thing) meal is the interchangeable name one.

DaveTheGhost · 09/10/2019 10:42

Crazy I have an adult colouring books so I’m doing that. I hope the duvet day makes you feel better!

FireflyGirl · 09/10/2019 11:56

Con-cone-scone bangs gavel Grin

It's fascinating how you only need to travel 30 mins for there to be such a big variation in language.

DS has an accent all of his own. I grew up in Hull (but DDad beat the worst of the accent out of us Wink), DH grew up in Kent but doesn't have the traditional accent because he went to grammar school, we live in an affluent commuter village and DS went to nursery in a posh town. I ignored him when he went through a phase of dropping his 't's, but we all say bath with a short 'a'.

NerosFiddle · 09/10/2019 12:10

We'll not even bring my accent into it. No one would be able to understand it Grin

CrazyBaubles · 09/10/2019 12:13

Xmas Grin MrsMad I probably wouldn't go for a non traditional Christmas dinner at home (DHs turkey gravy is amazing and I wouldn't want to miss out) but when we're away it can be annoying to spend £££ on a dinner that isn't right.
In Prague we had Chinese, in Iceland we had a weird version of a roast (was beef, roast potatoes, veg, no gravy and everything was very sweet). In NYC we had a proper dinner in an Irish pub (owned by an English couple). Loved that - they had crackers and so many of the American diners looked confused by DH and I pulling ours and wearing the hats while we ate Xmas Grin

Firefly I love accents, they absolutely fascinates me.
I really enjoy ILs get togethers as DHs family are spread as far north as Sunderland and as far south as Portsmouth. A lot of them have married people from the places they moved to then have moved again for work etc so they often have different accents to their partners and children.

I particularly enjoy his GM (who speaks like the Queen) debating pronunciations with MILs husband (Yorkshire) and BIL (North Wales) Grin
