I'm introducing adult stockings to my boyfriend's family - they don't do them but it's my family's tradition and my favourite thing. BF and his lovely teen daughter are on board and will do mine Grin

I will do all the shopping for them - I'm starting it so it's my job and I love doing it anyway. Just need a few ideas, if anyone has any...

I'm buying for:

  • V clever, nearly blind old lady in her 80s
  • 51 yo man who loves cars, space and everything James May would like
  • 50something woman I don't know very well who is quite rich/high-flying
  • 40something vegan hippy woman
  • 17 yo delight, BF's daughter (who gets a stocking anyway, but I'll add to hers if any good ideas come up)

for your vegan woman - do hamper of fresh spices in glass jars , herbal teas, tins/or dried chickpeas, beans (of different types), (if she is not allergic!) fancy nuts (make sure they are environmentally friendly origins - big thing about soya beans at the moment) & small hand grinder which can be used for coffee but can be used for whole spices, free trade coffee & tea, make sure packing is recyclable,

mumwon · 05/10/2019 20:08

50 something woman - go to art & craft markets & see if you can find original leather woman purse/small clutch bag or scarf,

I did stockings for my husband's parents last year for the first time.
Pork scratchings went down particularly well with his Dad!
I did include everyone's favourite chocolate bar, then the rest was made up of:
Nana blocks of a red bus, perhaps there's a car you could use? (His Dad loves busses)
Beautiful stationery
Bee products like candles and lipbalm (not sure that's ok for the vegan though)
Artist Hannah Wrendale does some beautiful items like keyrings and scarfs
Maybe multi packs of handcreams you could split?

Silk pillow cases are amazing for keeping skin and hair crumple free. I reckon all of the women in your list would appreciate that!

Hippy vegan... A canvas tote bag? Or the Willis and Jack bags, some of the makeup bags are £6 and are made out of recycled inflatables. Solid shampoo and conditioner bars?

Any Harry Potter fans would like the HP Dobble.

I'll keep thinking!

AmIAWeed · 05/10/2019 20:25

Bulbs with a vase, usually hyacinth, would smell lovely when open but it's also really nice watching the roots and stem grow so ideal for all ages and interest's

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 05/10/2019 20:33

These are all fantastic! Lots of things I wouldn't have thought of. Also suggests that many of you are a bit more generous than I (and my family) tend to be with stockings! This lot are all lovely though and deserve nice things.

Sorry for weird double posting.

Speaking for myself, they're not necessarily things I'd give, but rather things I would like in my (imaginary) stocking Grin

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 05/10/2019 20:41

Grin Got to admit that I am noting many ideas for my own stocking and considering dropping hints Grin

Giving the vegan lady slices and pulses would be like giving a meat eater a packet of mince. It’s just everyday day food that she’ll have anyway!

BikeRunSki · 05/10/2019 20:44

Slices = spices !

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 05/10/2019 20:50

@BikeRunSki that's very true - her kitchen is stuffed to the gunnels with them. However, she doesn't have much down here and DB is not amazing at catering for her, despite being an excellent cook and coming up with good dishes at main meals. Maybe some lovely snacks and fancy tea will go down well.

What sort of budget are you looking at?

Rich woman:
tiny packet of Hotel Chocolate chocs - about £4
Mini Aveda Hand Relief - about £7
Fortnum and Mason or Teapigs teabags - about £4

Hippy vegan:
Vegan chocolates - try Holland & Barrett (or After Eights used to be vegan, I think???)
Vegan pate - H&B
Oxfam often have pretty purses etc which are quite hippyish, in their gift section
Essential oil and a ceramic burner (can get the latter for about a fiver)

TheLidoOfThighs · 05/10/2019 21:02

I got my granny a magnifying glass once and made a case for it. That went down very well and might be useful for the older lady.

recklessgran · 05/10/2019 21:04

Some of these;

Great cheap but classy stocking filler and lots of different flavours.

DoLittleDoLoads · 05/10/2019 21:07

Great thread! I need ideas too!

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 05/10/2019 21:38

Budget-wise, family tradition has always been nothing over £4, but this lot are richer and less numerous than my clan.

AdaColeman · 05/10/2019 21:51

Small notebook & fun pen or pencil
