2019 Christmas bargains thread 1

Reastie · 18/08/2019 07:26

Jingle those bells because it’s time for thread 1!

The aim of this thread is to share ideas for Christmas bargains and present ideas and a little bit of Christmas chat etc. I’ll try my best to do a post with the most popular links, if there’s anything specific you’d like me to add or if something I’ve put up doesn’t work please let me know in bold . Thank you

As usual no affiliate links (I’m still not exactly sure what they are but consensus was not to have them) and if we have any sites to post personal sign up links we’ll do this on a separate thread so all can post their links, I’ll do this when —I get around to it— soon.

@ritzbiscuits please show examples

SquintEastwood · 21/08/2019 19:01

I agree with Spam, it may be dishonest of they don't disclose but realistically what difference does it actually make to someone who is interested in the product anyway?

NoWordForFluffy · 21/08/2019 19:02

I actually don't really care that much!

Letsgetreadytorumbleagain · 21/08/2019 19:03

If people make money by showing me a bargain (I check prices before I buy) then good for them

Someaddedsugar · 21/08/2019 19:12

15% off white company plus free uk delivery with a £50 spend with code AU320. Ends 15 October 2019.

101Robin · 21/08/2019 19:18

Someaddedsugar is the 15% off only on £50+?

Thegirlhasnoname · 21/08/2019 19:21

One of the problems with affiliate links (at least in the Instagram world, not a clue on forums) is that if you click on it to have a look but decide not to buy - say it was for something on amazon - but buy something else from that shop within 30 days (i think!) then the person that directed you there in the first place still gets commission. Works on cookies or something. It doesn’t bother me personally but know it gets some people riled up

ritzbiscuits · 21/08/2019 19:24

@Letsgetreadytorumbleagain I'm not going to show specific examples as featured on the thread. I don't think it's fair for me to publicly 'call out' a specific poster, if there is a chance they have accidentally posted a link with affiliate tracking.

Sounds like none of you are bothered with others earning commission off you, so fair enough I'll jog on!

Happy Christmas all x

I have honestly no idea no idea what you are talking about regarding affiliate links and don't know what they are either. But if I have shared a link like that then its with no knowledge of mine and I fore sure won't earn anything on it ....

Someaddedsugar · 21/08/2019 20:01

@101Robin I think so - it was on the catalogue I got through the post so there may be other codes online. From talking to a friend earlier, I think the 20% off everything event happens in November with no minimum spend.

lifelongfrugaleer · 21/08/2019 20:11

I know tinc stationary (ery?) Is popular here. I saw my local North East Sainsbury's had an end dedicated to some. There were rucksack and the usual notebooks, pens etc on pink green and either blue or grey

I think I understand affiliate links. It's basically someone links to something and if other people buy that product or from that website the original person owns a commission.
Due to cookies even if you look but don't buy. The cookies are on your computer so if you look at a different product and but that within a specific time the first person still gets the commission.

That's how my head has understood it. Bit like referral codes ish.

I don't mind in principle if genuine money is made by people recommending tried and tested products. I would want to know first though.

Chocolateunicorn · 21/08/2019 20:13

Crikey don't check in for a day and linkgate erupts . Surely no body is forcing anyone to purchase so it's hardly fraud, besides wait for the use my referral codes creep in you'll have palpitations.

sideorderofchips · 21/08/2019 20:21

I spy that superdrug has started putting gifts up online. New ones!

Go to superdrug, search gifts. It tells you the Christmas shop is closed. Click gifts and then set it to price low-high

Ta da!

Clevererthanyou · 21/08/2019 20:40

Erm has anyone else ordered the previously mentioned Lego Christmas Train set on Amazon? It was about £5.38 and I had a confirmation text today saying it had arrived but they've sent a miniature book of World War 1 poetry :s I like poetry and I have absolute respect for our past and present service people but my six year old would prefer LEGO Grin

moobar · 21/08/2019 20:43

I love these threads and have followed for years.

I don't get all this link stuff.

If Margaret is sitting at home earning a wee bit extra by suggesting a bargain to me, that I click but then don't buy, I really don't care. She not linking me to something horrendous that is going to land me in jail and corrupt my computer. She might also take in people's ironing, I don't care. Or do telephone sex lines, I also don't care.

From what I understand those who do care, can tell its one of these links anyway, so they disagree and don't click on it.

I hope Margaret or whoever makes a few pence and enjoys Christmas like the rest of us.

dementedma · 21/08/2019 20:55

The Rex London link is great. Adult dds stockings well under way now plus a secret santa type gift and a present for elderly mum...all for the princely sum of £21 and free delivery! Excellent

TellMeItsNotTrue · 21/08/2019 20:59

Debenhams have last year's beauty advent calendar half price at £35 - showing as not many left online

sideorderofchips · 21/08/2019 21:04

Just be careful with Rex London. They are great for cheap gifts but their customer service is atrocious

LikeSilver · 21/08/2019 21:08

Thought I would post as something happened today I haven’t seen before - my DS loves Transformers Rescue Bots and this morning I clicked ‘watch’ on a few brand new figures on eBay he hasn’t got, with a plan to get them after payday. This evening I had an email with a private offer from the seller for 25% off. I’ve never seen this before (sorry if it happens regularly!) so thought it was worth sharing in case a 24 hour watch before purchase might also get you a discount.

TalkingOrmer · 21/08/2019 21:20

@ritzbiscuits this comes up every year. And every year MNHQ post to tell us that it’s mumsnet who actually automatically add an affiliate link every time any poster posts a website link.

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 21/08/2019 21:22

@ritzbiscuits do you think the part of the url that includes mumsnetforu plus numbers etc is added onto the amazon links automatically? Apart from those, I can only see one link by one poster that is an affiliate link (possibly not intentional) so I wouldn’t say that anyone’s exploiting a popular thread for personal gain.

Mrsfussypants1 · 21/08/2019 21:22

Hi, if anyone's little ones are into baby born surprise, the new baby born surprise bottle house with a baby born surprise doll is down from £35 to £20 in Argos and on Amazon. it's just come out, and I know it's plastic tat, but thought I'd share. I saw a little girl at work today who had just bought it and it looked lovely.

Catanddogmake6 · 21/08/2019 21:27

@LikeSilver just wanted to check that you were still paying etc all through eBay. If you take the sale “off line” you can leave yourself open to fraud etc. Would hate to see you get ripped up off.
