How old is too old for a doll?

As in, a baby doll rather than a Barbie? I don't have daughters but was quite surprised to hear a colleague remark that she wouldn't be buying her DD a doll, although her DD had asked for one, because "she's six". I'm sure I still played with dolls at that age?

(Obviously no disrespect meant to colleague - and if she'd said something like "DD wants a baby doll but she's got four already and hardly plays with them", I wouldn't have batted an eyelid. But an age restriction seemed a bit odd.)

6 is ridiculously low, your colleague is crazy!
What does she want a 6 year old to have - makeup and a mobile phone?

DD was never that into dolls, preferred cuddly toys, still cuddles them now aged 14. She has a friend who was still playing with dolls age 11 at least.

six! my girl is only 5 but i cant see her giving up dolls anytime soon. from memory i was about 10 i think. year 5/6 at school.

greensnail · 12/12/2018 19:40

My 8 year old still plays with her dolls. I doubt she still will by next christmas though Sad

Newjobnewstart · 12/12/2018 19:42

My 8 1/2 year old still plays with dolls, loves them.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/12/2018 19:42

There is never an age too old for a doll.

Bumbumtaloo · 12/12/2018 20:06

My youngest is 7 in April and she still loves her ‘babies’ although she is moving more towards the Our Generation/Design A Friend dolls now. My eldest who is 9 at Christmas has never been into dolls.

Six does seem rather young not to buy a doll for, I would have thought that age group would be the target market.

Thanks - thought for a minute that I was the, er, unusual one! Just couldn't imagine who the target market was if not little girls under 8 or so. I'm sure I was playing with that sort of doll until I was 8 or so, and definitely Sindys until 11.

My 9 year old only lost interest this year, so definitely not too young! Nothing wrong with encouraging role play toys as long as possible

Mumshappy · 12/12/2018 20:58

My eight year old still loves dolls

JurassicGirl · 12/12/2018 21:01

My dd almost 10 still plays with dolls, she had Luvabella last Christmas & an Our Generation doll for her birthday.

She's getting another Lottie doll this Christmas & I'm sure she'll love it!

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 12/12/2018 22:41

The only thing my 10yo DD asked for this Christmas is an Our Generation doll. I think it’s cute she still likes dolls Smile

emmaliz · 12/12/2018 22:53

You are too old for dolls when you don't want a doll anymore! So no age limit. My v old mum still has her childhood doll. I doubt she plays with it - but she definitely knitted it a dress.

Printerneedsink · 12/12/2018 22:56

You can play with dolls at any age, just like you can play with trains, build sandcastles etc at any age! I don't really understand why you'd stop your child from playing with a toy at a certain age.

MyCatIsAFiend · 13/12/2018 06:53

Me neither!

Adults buy dolls. There is no age limit.

Santababyclaus · 13/12/2018 08:42

I have a friend who was raging because her PIL bought her dd a happyland set for Xmas. Apparently it was babyish. Her dd was just over 2......

NancyFrank · 13/12/2018 08:52

Me and my best friend 'decided' to stop playing with dolls age 12 as we knew we were probably too old. I've been maternal and broody since about 2 years old and now look after children as a career. Childhood is so short I never understand people trying to make their children grow up!

MutedUser · 13/12/2018 09:01

6 is not too old for a barbie wondering why she is rushing her DD to grow up so fast.

My 8 year olds still love playing with their dolls.

Juanbablo · 13/12/2018 12:36

My dd is 8 and although she's never been super into dolls she does sometimes play with them still.

margaritasbythesea · 13/12/2018 12:41

My dd is getting a designafriend doll and some stuff for her baby dolls. She's a but self-conscious about it but has decided that she likes to be herself and she doesn't care what anyone else thinks. Love her.

Zoflorabore · 13/12/2018 12:42

My dd will be 8 in February ( year 3 in school ) and loves her dolls.
She didn't start playing with dolls until she was around 4 and has an ever growing Our Generation collection, along with the play sets.
Last year she finally got an American Girl doll £££ after wanting one for a couple of years and she treats her like royalty.

Dd also loves Baby Alive dolls which until recently were mostly only available in America but now Smyths sell them so they're on her list too. She's getting several dolls and sets for Christmas and she is quite a grown up child for her age.

One of her best friends at school isn't 8 until next July and her mum told me she has bought her a phone. Way too young in my opinion.
