Could I start a thread on this please?

Good ideas especially for children. Useful things that I won't throw in the bin within a few weeks and don't cost a fortune.

So far I have:
Water bottle
Socks
Stickers
Pens and pencils
A knitting Nancy
Top Trumps
Annual

But any brilliant ideas out there?

Things I have either done previously or am doing this year that aren't plastic tat:
guitar pick with name on it
Little Sylvanian bits
Second hand vintage Polly Pocket playsets - the sort that look like a compact or ring/necklace
Nail varnish
Lip balm
hair stuff
compass
shower gel
Guide/Brownie related stuff
little books e.g. poetry
stickers
old coin
always a shiny pound coin in the toe (sadly one of them isn't a satsuma fan)
pencil case
socks/knickers
tree decorations
magnetic word kits
choc coins
Princess Jelly Belly sweets
Vintage second hand My Little Pony
jewellery
puzzle books e.g. Sudoku

stationary
tooth brushing timer
toothbrush
hobby-related items

I look out for sales at Smiggle, Accessorize, Boots, Body Shop, etc.

Myusernameisunique · 22/11/2018 14:03

Dairy free chocolate sprouts (thank you Asda!)
Slipper socks
Novelty toothbrush and matching toothpaste
Smiggle style stationary from Aldi,
A little round tub with a sharpener as the lid and coloured pencils inside
Bath bombs.
That's all I have for now but I'm going to see how full the stocking looks before buying more. I always end up buying too much!

Myusernameisunique · 22/11/2018 14:05

I love the mini coke can idea,I'm going to steal that one!

PrivateParkin · 22/11/2018 14:06

Great thread. I love the sound of the Paper Planes books as well, I think my DS would love that!

I agree with the PP who said the stockings are the best part - I always felt like that as a kid and I still do! I want it to be fun and not at all worthy, but at the same time, not too much tat. It's a fine balance, so this thread is v useful - loads of things I'd not thought of.

My DS (8) is getting (so far)
Typewriter ribbon (! To go with his typewriter which he's also getting)
Giant XXL marshmallows (from Flying Tiger)
Chocolate elves
Chocolate coins
Apple and satsuma
£1 coin in the toe (tradition)
Sponge Bob eye mask (admittedly tat, but he'll love it)
Books incl new King Flashypants and Pugs of the Frozen North
Mini crossword and wordsearch books from Book People
Periscope

Plus loads of ideas nicked from this thread!

sickmumma · 22/11/2018 14:12

We just put the cheaper gifts in there -

For
The boys it will be a football, chocolates, toothbrush, an annual, a couple of small
Toys, colouring stuff, books and a couple of console games.

For daughter it will be colouring, books, annual, toothbrush, little toys such as lol dolls,
Hatchimals etc.

SatsukiKusakabe · 22/11/2018 14:28

I also put odd food items in that they especially like - they are usually delighted to find Santa knows they like peanut butter and got them their own jar, or a pot noodle they’re not usually allowed. I’ve bought packets of jelly and a mould to be made up over the holiday.

SatsukiKusakabe · 22/11/2018 14:29

privateparkin what typewriter did you get him? My ds would love that.

PrivateParkin · 22/11/2018 14:34

@SatsukiKusakabe a secondhand Olivetti one from eBay!! He's been going on about it since he saw Goosebumps (as R.L. Stine uses a typewriter in that). I thought if I got a vintage one, if he doesn't like it I could put it on a shelf to look decorative!!

mrsdaz · 22/11/2018 14:52

Oh wow love the typewriter idea! I used to love playing with one as a child!

SatsukiKusakabe · 22/11/2018 14:56

It’s a great idea - one of my strongest childhood memories comes from being given an old typewriter from a family friend. My son was enthralled with one when we went to a museum with a room set up like the 60s. They still have a tactile appeal that computers don’t!

PrivateParkin · 22/11/2018 16:16

They definitely do. You can watch all sorts of YouTube videos on how to use and fix them as well, it's fascinating!! (This present really is for my DS, honestly.. )

MrsPear · 22/11/2018 16:39

Books fiction x3, puzzle each - Dino for ds2 and 3D football for ds1, annuals, soap, wallets (personalised), stickers -ds2- build your own dinosaurs, ds1 is a joke book for 9 year olds and chocolate.
There is also the small Lego set each.

Ellapaella · 22/11/2018 17:29

Ellapaella · 22/11/2018 17:30

Kaybush · 22/11/2018 17:31

Ooh. Bumping. What a useful thread, thanks!

gemdrop84 · 22/11/2018 17:37

The dc are into Lego and Playmobil so they are usually get a blind bag in their stockings which are always played with!
They have also had bath bombs from Lush or novelty soaps, a small mug, headphones, a torch, tattoos, bouncy balls, wind up toys, slipper socks, small funko pops.

MrsPear · 22/11/2018 18:15
