Stocking fillers (which aren't plastic tat)

lyinginthesundrinkingbubbles · 18/11/2018 17:47

Could I start a thread on this please?

Good ideas especially for children. Useful things that I won't throw in the bin within a few weeks and don't cost a fortune.

So far I have:
Water bottle
Socks
Stickers
Pens and pencils
A knitting Nancy
Top Trumps
Annual

But any brilliant ideas out there?

OP posts:

DSons stockings

Lush bath bombs
Lush bath wands
Double size Toblerone
Dragon rubber from Tiger
Other chocolate (they like big choc Santas)
Christmas socks
Books

Then I have 5 bags of gold coins that I will make a trail from their rooms to the meet at the top of the stairs and then down to the bag of presents under the tree. They pick up the coins as they come down and then count them to make sure hey have equal amounts otherwise there will be uproar.

WhatTheFronti · 20/11/2018 13:56

our family does a Santa sack instead of stocking (with slightly larger items than stocking fillers) then only 1 large gift under tree (remote control cars this year)
DS8, DS6 & DD5 are getting pretty much all the same justcolour/style variations....

2 x large Bubble wands
Wallet/purse - will put a $5 note in it
Sunglasses
Money box (big one that allows for sorting by denomination)
Books x2
Schleich animals x2
Voucher for a double scoop waffle cone at our local fancy icecream shop (in Aus so our summer holidays...)

And just added to the list thanks to this thread....

Kinder surprises/box of smarties
Nutella
Tin of Pringles

notsobumpy · 20/11/2018 14:01

@Leeds2 yep it was b&m where I got them!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/11/2018 17:45

Leatherbound
Some cheapo kazoos went down a storm in our house a couple of years ago - plastic tat but such great fun for all!

Maybe a rainmaker? They are so lovely to both look at and play with.

SatsukiKusakabe · 20/11/2018 19:24

Harmonicas successful here and not too bad on the old ears when they start playing them at 6.30 or whenever. The kazoo year is now generally acknowledged as a mistake, but they open their stockings on our bed Grin

I’m a little stuck this year but ds:

Goalie gloves
Shin pads and footie socks
Football pump
Pokemon cards
Woolly hat (football team)
Soft toy (he always likes to get one at Christmas) it will probably be a sloth

Dd
Hair clips and bands
Soft toy (beanie boo for collection - llama)
Leg warmers for dancing
New swimming goggles
Bicycle Bell
Accessories for her doll
Shin pads
Hatchimals

Had success with wind up torches and wallow talkies previously. Also chocolate orange, cereal, box of drink.

SatsukiKusakabe · 20/11/2018 19:28

Oh and oil pastels or something like that.

twosoups1972 · 20/11/2018 21:07

Great thread!

notthiscrapagain · 20/11/2018 21:39

For my DS (6) I've bought

Hobbycraft blizzard bubbles
Wooden noughts and crosses set (he really likes playing this atm)
A light-up fidget spinner
A rolling pin and 'ninjabread men' biscuit cutters
Magic growing tree
Ergonomic mechanical pencil - meant to be easy to grip to help his writing
Smiley toothbrush timer and disclosing tablets
White chocolate coins
Christmassy film
Melodica
Little wooden jitterbug thingy
Floating ball game (pipe to blow through and ball)

formerbabe · 20/11/2018 22:16

I also try to do stockings which aren't just plastic crap which will get broken and chucked in the bin after a week.

So far I've got for my ds(10) and dd(8) and will get

Pants
Socks
Leggings/t shirts
Pjs
Hair clips
Hair gel
Mini deodorant/kids perfume
Books
Temp tattoos
Water bottle
Chocolate
Hot water bottle
Colouring pens

formerbabe · 20/11/2018 22:17

Definitely going to steal the tub of popcorn idea!

formerbabe · 20/11/2018 22:20

I also get them both one of those baking kits from the supermarket...it's a nice activity to do on boxing day

PippilottaLongstocking · 20/11/2018 22:25

I try to keep the content of all my kids stockings similar but age appropriate so

  • socks
  • pens/pencils/paints/crayons depending on age and interests
  • notebook/drawing pad
  • small story book
  • mini craft kit for the older kids
  • wooden animals for the younger kids
  • toy cars
  • Lego minifigure
PippilottaLongstocking · 20/11/2018 22:25

Plus chocolate coins, walnuts, and a satsuma

CakeNinja · 20/11/2018 22:43

I have bought nothing at all yet, not one thing,
But on my list (that’s not even written down but in my head) for their stockings are...
Lego brickheadz (all)
Tombow brush pens (dd1)
Makeup (dds)
Polaroid film (dd2)
Pyjamas (all)
Minecraft hammer thing (ds)
Starbucks voucher (dd1)
Scrunchies (dds)
Roblocks figures (ds)
Pop vinyls (dds)
Lush (all)
Facemasks (dds)
Nail varnish (dd2)
Chocolate coin and satsuma (all)
Lindt coconut (dd1)
Chocolate orange (dds)
Caramel wafers (ds)
Top trumps (ds)

That’s as far as my mental list goes at the moment. It’s dd2’s birthday next week. Once that’s over I can write a list and think about Christmas properly!!

rosybell · 20/11/2018 22:59

codenameduchess · 21/11/2018 06:43

Seeing some of these I feel a little bad for dd! Last year she got:
A satsuma
Banana
Little Elsa and Olaf figures

This year it's:
An apple
A pear
Mini pack of Janmie dodgers
Some kind of surprise thing, possibly a squishy one (but definitely not LOL shit!)

The stockings real purpose is to keep her in bed while I pee so o don't see the point in loads. DD is 3 and is happy with literally anything though

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/11/2018 06:57

DD is intonrock painting so I’ll probably get her some metallic pens and one thing I read on her years ago was to put plaque disclosing tablets in the stocking. They both loved them.

SatsukiKusakabe · 21/11/2018 07:48

Oh do whatever you and she are happy with codename - I really enjoy doing a stocking as I didn’t have them, so often get carried away - I also use it to get them lots of things they need, sweets they’re not usually allowed, and they still get a green apple and satsuma. FC only does the stocking and a gift here so I feel I have to make it reasonably exciting, and also useful. Everyone has different traditions and they’re easy to please when they’re small so enjoy it! I always remember my ds when he was 3 proudly telling everyone about the toothbrush he got from Santa Smile

bluechameleon · 21/11/2018 07:49

My 10 month old is getting: wooden dinosaur cars, wooden lion, little wooden people, pretty long sleeved bib. Probably needs a couple more things to pad it out - I might put clothes or a book. Maybe a bath toy.

My 4 year old is getting: wooden superhero figures, a set of dolls house playground equipment, glow in the dark marbles, a robot finger puppet, a pirate biscuit cutter, an Orchard Toys mini game. Not sure if that's enough until I get the stocking down from the loft.

Both will have a satsuma, older one chocolate coins and probably a pack of Organix snacks for younger one.

InflagranteDelicto · 21/11/2018 08:04

Some ideas, not that I've bought much yet. I have ds, and two Dds, 14, 12 and 10.
Pringles
Bath bomb
Chocolate initial from hema (love hema)
Light up initial (hema again, might keep to not put in stocking)
Costa voucher
Socks
Pants
Shower gel
Deodorant
Something to play with
Saw the suggestion of a tape measure above - love that!
Got a few guide bits from the district shop for the dds
Sew on badge
Washi tape
Stationary
Notebook
Slime or putty for youngest
Earphones
Padlock for ds if that obsession is still running
Hairbrush each.
