How do your primary age DC listen to music in their rooms?

For a main present, I want to buy dds (9 & 7) something that allows them to listen to music in their rooms.

What do other people do? Until now they've only had cd players and story CDs. Want to encourage some musical exploration...

Also pondering a digital radio so they can listen to kids radio stations

DD (10) has my old CD player at the moment. I imagine she'll have a laptop by secondary age and will probably start streaming and having a wireless speaker by then.

FrankiesKnuckle · 16/11/2018 21:57

My 5 yr old has an echo dot - bought for birthday as she loved our echo in the kitchen.
Child settings, she can ask for stories, jokes and music, she loves it.

FrankiesKnuckle · 16/11/2018 21:59

I'll also add that the funkids radio station is played a lot in her room.

Socksdroppedonthestairs · 16/11/2018 22:01

My dds have a dot. With a Spotify account it plays everything they want (including random songs they're singing in choir)

RhinestoneCowgirl · 16/11/2018 22:04

DD(10) has a radio and mostly listens to Classic FM Confused We're not really making the most of the 21st century in our house...

GetRid · 16/11/2018 22:09

Rhinestone I love that your dd listens to classic FM!

The 21st century is so complicated!

My 10 year old and 8 year old listen to their play list on my Spotify (which plays hell with my algorithms) through their Kindle Fires.

weekfour · 16/11/2018 22:12

Our DD 7 has a Sonos. Spoilt! But I can turn it down/off from anywhere which is a bonus.

ileclerc · 16/11/2018 22:18

Amazon music through their kindles.

Beingginger · 16/11/2018 22:24

Spotify via an Echo Dot, it also has a radio player but the kids don’t really use that facility.
We have one in every room and you can talk to each other through them too, which is handy at dinner time Grin

AlliKaneErikson · 17/11/2018 03:19

My 11 yr old DS listens to Classic FM too! He has an echo dot in his room. Given the prize at the moment I think we’ll buy one for dd 8 as well.

Isadora2007 · 17/11/2018 04:09

CD player, echo dot as a Bluetooth speaker or via amazon music.

Dontbestupidagain · 17/11/2018 07:11

Each having a Google home mini for Christmas. We have a Spotify account so will be able to use that.

LegArmpits · 17/11/2018 07:20

Google Home mini's here too, with a Google Play Music account. Couldn't recommend it more. You can also broadcast messages to each other from them instead of shouting across the house

NoLogicInThis · 17/11/2018 08:39

Once you get a echo dot or a google do you have to pay a music subscription fee to play any music?

ProfessorMoody · 17/11/2018 08:49

Echo Dot with family Spotify subscription.

ProfessorMoody · 17/11/2018 08:49

I'd avoid the Google Home. After having both them and dots/Echos, the Echos are FAR superior. The Google ones are crap.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 17/11/2018 08:55

Amazon music/Spotify via Amazon echo. I would get the echo rather than the dot if it's for listening to music.

I love the fact I can turn it off/down from my phone!

Toomanycats99 · 17/11/2018 08:57

I have just bought DD's 7+11 dots for Xmas. At £25 each I decided it was definitely worth it.

Misty9 · 17/11/2018 09:00

I'm pondering this issue too for 7yo ds - and feeling like a dinosaur wrt technology these days! I'm not keen on the echo/AI stuff as I try to boycott Amazon but is the only other option a radio? He loves my radio.

Xmasbaby11 · 17/11/2018 09:05

My 4 and 6 yo have a cd player in the playroom. I know it's a bit low tech but they have lots of cds and I figure they'll go digital before I know it, so no rush.

astoundedgoat · 17/11/2018 09:07

Spotify on their Kindles (7 & 9).

AlexaShutUp · 17/11/2018 09:08

Amazon Echo with family subscription to Amazon music. Obviously, you can listen to the radio on the Echo as well.

NoLogicInThis · 17/11/2018 11:40

Do you need to buy speakers as well as the echo or does it play it through that?

ProfessorMoody · 17/11/2018 12:29

The Echo is a speaker, you don't need anything more.
