Getting a phone for DD1 (10 ) stuck for similar 'wow' present for DD2(8)

So the time has come for us to get DD a phone. It won't be a hugely fancy pants one. And we're looking at phones for about £50-£70 for her. She is going to be properly wowed to get one as we keep palming her off saying it'll be just before secondary school that we'll get one for her.
Anyway - we are now totally stumped on what to get DD who is 8 a gift that has a similar wow factor for her.
Has anyone got any ideas of something suitable for a similarish budget.
We thought about an MP3 type player, but realised we don't have anything or anyway to load music onto it so that's probably scrubbed.
In all honesty I am truly stumped!!!

We have 3 DD’s and our oldest who was nearly 11 at the time got one last year and like your daughter was blown away... Christmas is made for reactions like that!!!

We gave our other 2 DD’s their Pony club subscription (wrapped up the jumpers and ties to bulk it out) and that went down really well! How about tickets to see a show, block of sport or activity lessons she would like to do?

More electrical ideas...

An iPod touch which is a nice inbetween all the apps, music, google/safari for homework without the actual phone part.

Fitbit/kids version

Echo Dot

Kids smart watch

Instax poloroid camera

Kindle

Nintendo mini

Hope that helps and gives you some ideas.

An electric scooter?
For an 8 year old, is that even legal?

WillChellam · 12/11/2018 06:13

Amazon fire HD 8 on black friday will be in your price range and is excellent.

Frustratedmum78 · 12/11/2018 06:14

bruffin are you picturing a 125 scooter? Grin

bruffin · 12/11/2018 06:33

like illegal

bruffin · 12/11/2018 06:34

link again

KC225 · 12/11/2018 06:53

Another vote for kindle. Mine were 9, also purchased on black Friday

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 12/11/2018 07:05

There not illegal to use on private land though bruffin your link even says that.

Even the ones that are not suitable for road use are able to be used prefectly legally on private land ie the back garden or a field

bruffin · 12/11/2018 07:10

Most people wont have the room to use them

yawning801 · 12/11/2018 07:16

Let's not let this thread descend into a debate about electric scooters!

What about a Nintendo switch? I don't really know what they do or how much they are but I've seen them advertised.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 12/11/2018 07:18

That soesnt make something illegal though
Most people dont use a bus that doesnt make buses. That doesnt make buses illegal.

You think because most people cant/dont do some thing it makes it illegal - weird

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 12/11/2018 07:21

And oh bruffin this is going to blow your mind i got a an actual moped for my 10th birthday. Perfectly legal in my back garden

bruffin · 12/11/2018 07:22

Its illegal for them to be taken out on a public highway without licence helmet etc
Its a really stupid idea for a present for s child

bruffin · 12/11/2018 07:26

I like the idea of a fitbit, but do children's ones need to be connected to a phone.

Jemimafuckinpuddleduck · 12/11/2018 07:36

@bruffin

We went for the Disney Garmin tracker for our 7 year old and while you can connect it to a computer, yoy don’t need to to make it work...

Around £50 too so within your budget.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 12/11/2018 07:46

bruffin yes heres a thing you dont have to take it out on a public highway.

Its not a really stupid idea if you have the room.

EvaHarknessRose · 12/11/2018 08:22

To be fair, to be a wow present it needs to be something she really wants. Remember, its going to be her getting a phone moment one day.

Don’t splash on a guilt present yet, take some ideas and then hold your fire as she might see something she really wants. Plus, hers will likely look bigger/more expensive.

Arrowfanatic · 12/11/2018 09:22

When pp said electric scooter I thought she meant one of those that looks like an ordinary push two wheeled scooter but that has a battery pack on. I've seen a few kids riding them to our school.
