Anyone up for a 'sort out myself / my house / my life for Christmas' thread?

This has become something of an autumn tradition for me. You would think I'd learn from my mistakes, but no! Blush Still, it worked, sort of, last year, so here I go again. Any company and encouragement welcome.

Never mind sorting out Christmas (although I intend to do that with my usual style and poncery chaotic approach) I need to sort out

(1) myself

I need to eat a healthier diet. It has been rubbish since the summer and my winter clothes are now tight.
I need to build some exercise into my week. I love the cold air and blue skies of autumn. Less the rain, but I can't have everything. Cycling to work would be a good start. Maybe even some C25K style running.
I need to go to the dentist, the optician, and the hairdresser.

(2) my house
I need to sort out the garden for winter. The view from my kitchen window is of dead bedding plants and soggy leaves. The shed door needs a lick of paint and the pots need to be put away.
I need a proper sort out and declutter. Targets are the loft, my (and the DCs) wardrobe, and the toybox-coffee table thing in the lounge that could contain pretty much anything and probably hasn't been opened all year.
DC2s room needs some paint. We took down some (baby) border / stickers a few weeks ago and the marks are annoying me.
I need to get a plumber in to look at a dodgy toilet. It is only a matter of time before I really regret not getting it fixed.

(3) my life
Paperwork is taking over my kitchen. Sort, file, or shred.
I need a system to deal with the avalanche of demands that the DCs school sends home in the run up to Christmas. Ditto clubs and their events. We're bound to miss something otherwise.
I'm becoming a real procrastinator and ditherer. I need to get a focus and be more efficient.

Anyone want to join me? I reckon with 8 weeks until Christmas, I should be able to fix those things that annoy me around the house, get on top of the domestic chaos, and shift 10 pounds in weight.

TimeForMy10thCuppa · 28/10/2018 23:46

Me. My house is a mess. Every single room needs attention and lots of it. The kids clothes need sorting. So do paperwork and toys. I need to do a huge declutter. With both DC at school full time and DH doing a course at work, I have most of the day apart from lunchtime when I'm at work.
I need to eat better and start walking to work again. I've gained so much weight recently I feel rubbish. I need to start making some time for myself to take care of me instead of binge watching Netflix once the kids are in bed.
I definitely need to get organised. I'm dropping the ball alot more recently and leaving everything till the last minute.
I need to take control of my life and deal with it all instead of leaving it til tomorrow.
So count me in.

SassitudeandSparkle · 28/10/2018 23:52

I am always in on these threads! My DH has just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes so I am trying to overhaul our eating to minimise the carbs (he is a big fan of carbs but is trying).

Our current decluttering theme is games that our DD has grown out of, they are leaving the house a few at a time!

montymum · 29/10/2018 00:41

Yes I am in.
Myself- I would love to lose 10lb and tone up a bit. I need to plan food each week and add in a bit of exercise. I had started running again in September and was enjoying it but was totally rubbish in October.
My house- I need a pre Christmas sort out. We have so much stuff and with 2 of the DC having birthdays in November more will be coming in. I also want to go through all the wardrobes and send lots off to the charity shop. Also just the general keeping on top of cleaning so I get a better routine which is actually manageable with 3 DC and a teaching job!
My Life.. I need to prioritise and plan my week so that I don't spend all weekend thinking about washing , cleaning and planning when I just want to spend time with my family. I also want to spend a bit more 1-1 time with ds1 as he is being a bit challenging at the moment and I think it might help.

Isadora2007 · 29/10/2018 04:45

Yes yes!
I too am up for this challenge.
I have two months left of a gym membership and I’ve not been at the gym since my grandchild was born 5 weeks ago. I’m finding him being here (my dd is 18 and lives at home with us) a little overwhelming and I know my eating and exercise has just gone by the wayside. I’d like to get back out to two exercise sessions and maybe a relaxing one like yoga or Pilates per week.

House- really need to sort, sell or chuck a pile of stuff before December. Plus a proper cleaning session- skirting boards and steam mopping kind of thing. I do the basics each week but not the bigger bits.

Life- I think having a bit more structure in my week would help me a lot. And I’ve a work assignment to start and finish this month too and no motivation to get it done.

glenthebattleostrich · 29/10/2018 04:51

Me! I need to sort my house, get back on low carb and lose a stone, find some motivation for my job. Sort out my beauty routine.

Anyone up for a daily to do list?

Tomorrow I will-

Moisturise morning and evening
Book wax and nail appointment
Low carb
Throw away the empty bottles / pots in the bathroom

ohlittlepea · 29/10/2018 05:07

Me too! I want to feel sorted at Christmas not stressed.
I'm doing the organised Mum method for the housework but need to also do some gardening and sorting.
I also need to start taking better care of myself.

Today I will

  • eat a healthy breakfast.
  • book my smear test
  • Do TOMM Monday jobs
  • buy a multivitamin
  • Clean inside at least one if the kitchen cupboards.

Thank you for the thread, we can do this!

Peridot1 · 29/10/2018 05:08

Me too please! Definitely need a general sort my shit out thread.

I procrastinate so much. Can’t decide if it’s just procrastination or lack of motivation or just laziness. I jump from one thing to another. Spend far too much time on MN which doesn’t help.

Have lost over a stone since May but it’s very slow going. Was doing really well but have lost motivation recently.

Was walking every day - had got up to walking 10km every day but have lost motivation there too.

House - have a pages long list of jobs to do. House is generally clean but needs decluttering and a deep clean.

I have a complication in that I am going to Australia for three weeks from mid Nov. Get back 5 December so straight into Christmas.

A daily list is a great idea.

Tomorrow I will:

Track food on MFP
Go for a walk for one hour
Stretch and start plank challenge
Take my vitamins and supplements
Drink 6 glasses of water
Book wax and pedicure for day before I go away

House job - make up spare bedroom for friend coming on Tuesday
Finish clearing off desk I want to sell
Take photos of desk and cupboard to put on FB selling page
Move empty boxes from landing

Getting some sleep now might help!

MrDonut · 29/10/2018 05:10

Me!!!

I really need to do this.

proseccoandbooks · 29/10/2018 05:16

Me too! I'm in!

thewayoftheplatypus · 29/10/2018 05:46

Oh yes, I’m in!
I need to lose considererably more than 10 pounds, but have started incorporating exercise into my day.

I also need to deep clean the house, get rid of as many unused toys as possible before the December onslaught (both kids have December birthdays, as well as Christmas!) and sort out the hole of filth and disorganisation that is my own bedroom!
I will use this post as inspiration to make a start on that one today!

PersisFord · 29/10/2018 05:57

I’m in. I need to:

Throw away lots of toys
Sort out the spare room
Get my hair cut
Paint my toenails
Run three times a week
Drink more liquids that are not wine or coffee.
Start meal planning properly again - I am wasting so much food at the moment!

flowerycurtain · 29/10/2018 06:21

Yes please. You've just described my weight, garden and house!

Aiming to lose 10 lbs in 7 weeks, be organised for Xmas so I can enjoy it with the children and sort the garden out.

Work is mad busy for us in the next 7 weeks so it's going to be tough.

flowerycurtain · 29/10/2018 06:23

Oooh I like a to do list. Today;

Weigh myself
Eat 3 healthy meals and no snacks
Record on mfp
Get 15 000 steps mainly by gardening.
Sort 2 paperwork files
A bit of work

SingaSong12 · 29/10/2018 06:34

Hi
Was going to start a thread about sorting things out and Christmas/New Year seems as good a goal as any.

  • I've been sorting out my clothes, and odd bits of jewellery but still a bit to go yet, also my drawer of shame
  • regular gym, at least once a week even if it's just a few minutes
  • cooking from fresh more, at least twice a week, shift a bit of weight
  • get off the Internet and in the real world more
  • cull paperwork
  • sort out a new bathroom, currently a tip
  • job hunting continues
NemoRocksMyWorld · 29/10/2018 06:48

I started the big house declutter this weekend! Took nine (NINE) bin bags of clothes to the charity shop. Removed a wardrobe from my house and did a took a car load to the tip! Also sorted the two youngest children's clothes (their wardrobes were full of outgrown clothes).

Today I am going to buy a new chest of drawers for dc3 as his is completely broken, sort out his clothes and have a deep clean of the kitchen.

This thread has already reminded me that I need to book a smear test and get my roots done

Feel the diet may need to wait for after Xmas though 😂

thistimenextsummer · 29/10/2018 07:04

Ooh I like this thread!
I'd really like to lose 1/2 stone before Xmas - start an exercise routine, eat better, less alcohol for a start.
House is ok clutter wise but we've a few 'big jobs' (including a potentially expensive damp issue) that we seem to keep putting off - need to get the ball rolling.

Want to start some TOMM. Even the thought of 30 mins seems too daunting with all the other life admin going on but I think I can at least start with 5 mins a day and build up.

Christmas - I want to be super organised so I can actually enjoy it rather than the usual mad rush that I can't wait to be over. I've started cards already and am really trying to be ruthless with who to send to and have started thinking about advent activities.

Good luck everyone!

Turquoisetamborine · 29/10/2018 07:06

Good thread! I’ve just come back from the US so everything has been on hold while I was leading up to this long awaited holiday.

I have put on a lot of weight the last year so I need to lose at least 1.5 stones. I have my work lunches in the fridge ready for my working week.
I need to go to the optician for glasses and contacts.
Generally sort out my house.

Alanamackree · 29/10/2018 07:36

Can I join?
I’m madly busy, stressed and a trying to stave off a touch of winter depresssion. As a result everything is going to pieces.
I need to declutter the main bedroom (this time last year it was a minimalist dream and I want that back)
I need to sort my linen closet which is descending into chaos.
I need to bring bags that have been cluttering up the hall for months to the charity shop
And put some boxes up in the attic
Which could also do with a good tidy (but I might do that in January when I put away the Christmas decorations)
The toy room badly needs a clear out (which is difficult with a dc with asd who grieves for lost toys)
And the children’s bedrooms all need sorting.
I also need to visit the dentist, optician and hairdresser and the gp.
The garden needs the leaves swept, to be cut back and weeded. The shed needs painting.
I need to organize to get gutters cleaned and repair the wooden bits under the roof
The windows need cleaning
The whole house needs a deep clean
I need to sort out my washing machine and get a plumber in.
But I’d rather ponce Sad

BeeFarseer · 29/10/2018 09:07

Joining. Brilliant thread.

My house is so cluttered it's bordering on a 'before' scenario for a hoarders show. It's not quite there yet, but there isn't a single room that isn't cluttered.

DH and I are hoping he'll pass his driving test next month so we can get to the tip. Before then, I want to take small steps towards sorting things out, or I'll get overwhelmed. So I'll say that I want a clean, uncluttered living room, kitchen and bathroom for Christmas as they're the rooms that will be on show to visitors, and I think they're doable.

After work today, I am going to declutter the bathroom and spot clean it.

glenthebattleostrich · 29/10/2018 09:14

Appointments booked for Saturday.
Good low carb breakfast eaten

And I've booked a decluttering session with a professional who will come in and make me do it.

Feeling very motivated

FussyDora · 29/10/2018 09:33

I'm with you!

Weight watchers started yesterday! 10lb off would be a jolly good start!!

House needs a good general overhaul as it's cluttered, it's clean but hard to keep tidy. All relatives primed for Christmas already - two have bough experience days for the kids instead of toys. The rest have a little list each of a couple of presents the kids have asked for so hoping to keep the plastic tat under control!

We want to rejig the use of our kitchen storage as it just isn't working for us anymore. And DH has plans to redecorate hall stairs and landing (which will of course cause chaos).

I have a nice shiny new notebook to plan everything.

Made a good start by cleaning and decluttering DS room yesterday - you can now see the floor I just need to go through some more boxes to get rid of some stuff!

Figmentofimagination · 29/10/2018 10:00

Can I join?! Think I'm going to start a list in my new notebook of all my plans.

Need to drink more water every day, not getting anywhere near enough.
Dining room needs rearranging/ decluttering - DVD racks are being removed, 1 is being moved to the conservatory, the rest are being sold/ repurposed as shelves in shed. Most DVD's are being sold on FB/ given to charity, with some being kept (Disney, Christmas etc.). Drawers are being moved to where the DVD racks are.
2 radiator covers need to be built and secured to the wall.
Some of my old dresses and jewellery need to be sold
Kitchen cupboards need to be cleaned and rearranged. The pan cupboard is getting really bad.
Luckily we organised all the paperwork over summer, but it still needs shredding. I do a bit every day until the shredder overheats.
The 3rd bedroom (storage) needs to be sorted, we don't need to keep everything.
I went in the loft yesterday to find something, I don't usually go up there so didn't realise how busy it is up there. So I want to go through the old boxes and sell/ send to charity shop.
A new bath panel needs to be bought as the one we have is massively cracked. Would also like to get someone to look at the toilet as it keeps running if you don't press the flush long enough.
New blinds need to be bought and fitted. Ours aren't child safe.
Christmas presents bought for all adults. Only kids have been bought for so far.
Conservatory needs cleaning - waaayyy to many cobwebs out there.

Can't think of anything else to add. I'm sure it will be added to at a later date.

Getonthatbroomandfly · 29/10/2018 10:45

I'm in

I need to:

• Charity bag clothes and toys.
• clear and organise wardrobes.
• sort my calendar (I've to be in 300 hundred places at once)
• finish decorating bedrooms
• exercise
• spruce up my winter wardrobe. Feeling a bit frumpy at the moment.

toomuchtooold · 29/10/2018 11:18

I'm in! I need to

  • sort the garden for winter: cut the weeds grass one last time, cut back the rampaging Philadelphus, take out the tomato plants and cover the veggie bed with tarp, weed the bit where the soft fruit bushes are, prune the roses at the end of Dec or so, and have a think about what to plant next year. Oh and cut the pyracanthus and tidy the front garden in preparation for Christmas lights. And trim the side hedge. And the back one. Bloody hell...

Replace the backing material on the sofa cover which is falling apart but I love it and IKEA don't make it any more.

Lose some weight. Like seriously. Just to reverse the trend of the last 2 years of slowly gaining weight would be awesome. I cut down my drinking this year and I wanted to give that time to bed in but I think I'm ready to start sorting out my diet. I just want to able to eat food I enjoy and do a bit of exercise and stay a decent weight. I might go back to C25K - there are great podcasts for it from the NHS but I might actually do my own this time as I am very picky about music Smile

But the kids are on half term this week so aim for this week will be to survive the week and also carve some pumpkins Smile

oatmilk4breakfast · 29/10/2018 12:07

Ok I’m in.

I have a ‘punch list’ on A4 paper.

Bookshelves
Bedroom storage
Bathroom door
Get some prints on walls
Stuff about my rented flat that is driving me bonkers

Good luck with yours
