Gifts for extremely environment conscious vegans

Christmascookiesmmmm · 27/10/2018 00:16

I have a friend who is extremely conscious of the environment to the point that she only buys cucumbers if they don’t have the plastic packaging on, which I think is great and I’m trying to be more like her!

So anything with excess packaging is completely out. She makes all her own gifts- useful things that she knits herself. I was thinking of getting her a gift voucher to her favourite wool shop but I’m not sure if that exists yet.. need to do some research first.. along with some vegan chocolate treats and her favourite tea. If anyone has any other ideas they’d be much appreciated!! Thanks!!

Whatever you get don't wrap it!

Runnynosehunny · 27/10/2018 00:22

Oxfam goat

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/10/2018 00:23

I get beeswax from my local beekeeper, melt it with oil (whatever's handy) and put it in recycled small receptacles, voila, lip salve. She'd love it.

A thoughtfully chosen selection of spices?

Yes I’d thought of that as I know there’s a big thing about wrapping paper! (I’d never really thought about this before last year and have about 20 rolls of wrapping paper under the bed as I love Christmas wrapping paper designs Blush ) Was going to cover a hobbycraft wooden box with pretty Indian paper and put the stuff in there- does that sound ok do you think? So she can use the box again hopefully.

Pyjamas from a company that makes sustainable non plastic clothing

Runnynosehunny · 27/10/2018 00:24

Some vegans won't use beeswax as it may be considered an animal product

TheWiseWomansFear · 27/10/2018 00:25

Wrapped in a scarf

TheWiseWomansFear · 27/10/2018 00:25

No silk - it's an animal product and no cotton as it's unsustainable

Christmascookiesmmmm · 27/10/2018 00:27

Oops I hadn’t seen all your replies!!!

Those are amazing ideas thank you!! Love the oxfam goat idea and the Beeswax- that is genius and I’ll definitely try to do that!!!

@Slithering the spices is a fantastic idea too- she loves cooking curries!!! Although I’ve no idea where to start as I’ve never cooked a curry! I’ll look into it though!

Thanks !!

Put the gifts in a reusable jute bag - pretty, practical and part of the gift. Seasalt sells some nice ones. I think your original idea of wool shop gift voucher sounds great. I'm sure that her local shop will be able to come up with something even if they don't usually sell vouchers.

sumsumsum · 27/10/2018 00:29

Or sponsor an animal at a local city farm.

blaaake · 27/10/2018 00:31

Get her a grip.

Marcipox · 27/10/2018 00:31

Sadly not the beeswax for a vegan, though it's a nice idea.

Yy to the goat, or any Oxfam gift. School dinners, drinking water, chickens.

PurpleDaisies · 27/10/2018 00:33

I get beeswax from my local beekeeper, melt it with oil (whatever's handy) and put it in recycled small receptacles, voila, lip salve. She'd love it.

Bee products are out for vegans.

I’d go with vouchers to a local vegan restaurant or booze (it’s easy to check if it’s vegan friendly).

Marcipox · 27/10/2018 00:33

Okay maybe not chickens.

Seeds, Oxfam ones for subsistence farmers, and /or some to grow herself.

Runnynosehunny · 27/10/2018 00:34

Just thought a vegan might not like to sponsor an actual Oxfam goat if it is used to produce meat or milk. But they do lots of other projects she may prefer.

Unrelated to Veganism but SCIAF’s “buy a goat” type donations are brilliant.

You can buy a child (in the DRC I think) a birth certificate meaning they become officially registered and can access health care. I don’t work for SCIAF (Scottish version of CAFOD) and I’m not catholic, but they do absolutely amazing work. You can also buy vegetable gardens.

BakedBeans47 · 27/10/2018 00:45

Is wool vegan?

Christmascookiesmmmm · 27/10/2018 00:45

I love those jute bags from sea salt! I did want to do the box though- is there anything she’d object to with the box?

Ahh that’s a shame about beeswax!

Thinking about it, she doesn’t have a lot of spare cash at all really so I’d quite like to get her something she can use herself, although I’m sure she would love an oxfam gift and it’s a lovely idea.

I also just thought, she has cats and loves them! So anything related to cats might be good too..

MrsTerryPratchett and OP anything from a bee isn’t vegan, including wax. Definitely don’t get that.

Depending on your budget, how about a Chilli’s bottle? (Reusable metal water bottle)

myrtleWilson · 27/10/2018 00:51

Does she wear make up? a beauty basket?

Marcipox · 27/10/2018 00:54

No, wool isn't vegan is it. The Woolly Hug we made for a vegan family was made from acrylic. Though that is plastic , which I hadn't realised myself.

Holland and Barrett sell beauty kitchen stuff which is lovely. Some of it is vegan
