Gifts for extremely environment conscious vegans

Christmascookiesmmmm · 27/10/2018 00:16

I have a friend who is extremely conscious of the environment to the point that she only buys cucumbers if they don’t have the plastic packaging on, which I think is great and I’m trying to be more like her!

So anything with excess packaging is completely out. She makes all her own gifts- useful things that she knits herself. I was thinking of getting her a gift voucher to her favourite wool shop but I’m not sure if that exists yet.. need to do some research first.. along with some vegan chocolate treats and her favourite tea. If anyone has any other ideas they’d be much appreciated!! Thanks!!

My DD once received a purse made from recycled fire service's hose. She, and I, thought it was fab.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/10/2018 01:24

The vegan in my office loves it but she's not super-strict.

In was given a beautiful book called Fresh India for my birthday, recommended by friend's vegan neice. Really beautiful book, vegetarian but mostly vegan. That with some lovely spices would be a great present.

Cotton produce bags. You could pop some in a shopping tote, they do plain ones that you could personalise for her.

yaffle · 27/10/2018 06:31

If she's Vegan then she won't use beeswax ( ditto honey, silk , wool) and may not agree with sponsoring a goat as it will be seen as exploiting an animal for human gain ( as they're raised for milk to sell, killed for meat) and therefore not Vegan .
What sort of budget did you have in mind?

yaffle · 27/10/2018 06:34

www.babipur.co.uk/eco-living-home.html might be worth a look , or www.ethicalsuperstore.com

OccularPatdown · 27/10/2018 06:43

As PP have said, beeswax and wool are NOT vegan, so don't get those!! I'd go with the voucher, but for a vegan restaurant if there's one nearby, and chocs/tea. The box sounds lovely to put them in.

Wolfray · 27/10/2018 07:01

How about taking a look at Sukin Skincare? It is vegan friendly and claims to be carbon neutral. It's tag like in 'Beauty that doesn't cost the Earth'. It can be picked up in an few places.

Some reusable food wraps (the ones that aren't made with beeswax) may be lovely too.

You sound like a very thoughtful friend! ☺

Sleephead1 · 27/10/2018 07:12

Have a look on the website babipur it sells lots of eco living products bamboo toothbrushes , reusable San pro. razors , shampoo bars , reusable bags ECT I think you might find something on there for her

MelanieCheeks · 27/10/2018 07:21

If she knits can you get something that goes with that - I'd love a yarn holder that keeps the ball from rolling around the place. Have you a local craft fair where you could find something hand made?

ifiwasabutterfly · 27/10/2018 07:30

How about a 4ocean bracelet?

Does she have somewhere she can grow things? I'd get her some seeds for heritage vegetables!

Jackshouse · 27/10/2018 07:57

Something made from a recycled product.

Didiusfalco · 27/10/2018 08:19

Much as they seem to be hated on here Lush have a lot of vegan products, including gifts. The inside packaging looks like foam but is actually made from leftovers and is a kind of dehydrated potato. The paper and boxes are all recycled/recyclable. Their glittery stuff isn’t mica but food grade lustre. I should think they would satisfy your friends criteria.

ForgivenessIsDivine · 27/10/2018 08:36

Maybe ask this in the Ethical Living section. The box idea is nice. If she is short of money she is likely to appreciate something she does actually use and does actually buy. I know that when I am skint, I hate getting presents that I would not spend my money on. So... have a look round her house and see what she uses and buy from that.

MouseBatMummy · 27/10/2018 08:38

You sound very thoughtful OP! If you want to get her something she can use herself and maybe even something a little pampering to go in the box you are making u wound recommend you take a look at this site. It's a great independent small business that specialises in vegan, cruelty free cosmetics and toiletries and it's also really reasonably priced. Loads of great Christmas gifts ideas online and in store

Hairy Growler just came up on another thread. Stunning jewellery, hand-made from recycled silver. If it's in budget, I bet she'd love it.

User5trillion · 27/10/2018 08:42

Google beebombs, they are seedballs that are made up of native wildflower seeds that support bees and other pollinators. They can be grown in tubs and they are lovely, really beautiful flowers and self seeding for next year.

rainbowtrain · 27/10/2018 08:53

OP she might not use wool either, as other people have mentioned.
I would probably try to get something very useful if she doesn't have mush money

Google the IronFish
Reusable metal straws or cups
Bamboo toothbrush or cutlery for take aways
A bag for carrying vegetables and keeping them fresh at home
A kit to make nut milk
Or a rack to grown herbs

rainbowtrain · 27/10/2018 08:54

Mush money? 🤦🏻‍♀️

rebelrosie12 · 27/10/2018 08:58

I would say lush products too. They do shampoo bars which have no packaging and you can buy vintage material to wrap them in at the tills

sashh · 27/10/2018 09:23

If you are buying spices then

Turmeric/haldi
Cumin/jeera
ground coriander
coriander seeds

are used a lot so you could buy them and then add a fem more unusual ones.

If you are making a charity donation and your friend likes green projects then River Power Pods might be an idea

www.justgiving.com/fundraising/river-power-pod-africa-project

The idea is that the river pods will be used to create power for the school initially but long term local people are being trained to build and maintain the pods so they can be installed elsewhere.

The design has been given free.

SequinsOnEverything · 27/10/2018 09:52

Thanks for that link sashh I've just made a donation.

This thread is really useful for ideas for my own Christmas list.

I echo what others have said about beeswax, that's out for vegans.

I have a metal straw and a brush for cleaning it, which I leave in my bag and use when I'm out. A The Vegan Kind box would be good. I've had their lifestyle one and the food one and both are good. I'd be pretty happy if someone gave me one.
www.thevegankind.com

I'll go against what others have said though, when I'm broke I appreciate gifts that I couldn't justify buying myself, not things I use all the time anyway.

Lwmommy · 27/10/2018 10:24

Any shops like this near where you are that you could get her a voucher for zerowasteleicester.co.uk
