Gifts for extremely environment conscious vegans

I have a friend who is extremely conscious of the environment to the point that she only buys cucumbers if they don’t have the plastic packaging on, which I think is great and I’m trying to be more like her!

So anything with excess packaging is completely out. She makes all her own gifts- useful things that she knits herself. I was thinking of getting her a gift voucher to her favourite wool shop but I’m not sure if that exists yet.. need to do some research first.. along with some vegan chocolate treats and her favourite tea. If anyone has any other ideas they’d be much appreciated!! Thanks!!

I also just thought, she has cats and loves them! So anything related to cats might be good too

Cats are the most un-vegan /un-vegatarian animals going. Exclusively meat eaters (apart from chewing grass) and prolific hunters . Though if she has cats she's doing the care for the animal itself.

I'd sponser some cats in a Rescue for her (they'll have loads of old or unwell cats that cannot be homed) . Her ethics aside they still need care.

DH and I are vegetarian and had a cat , we also sponsered two cats from her Rescue . ..

FOSH reusable bottle or coffee cup comes in pretty colours but still ethical with a selection of tea/coffee and some nice vegan sweets and chocolate for a treat?

@Letsgetreadytorumba
That linked buy a birth certificate is the loveliest thing I’ve ever seen and has made me cry.

Etino · 27/10/2018 12:56

I’m lonking to it and telling all my friends pre Christmas!
Birth Certificate

storage containers, kilner jars/bottles?

Pixie2015 · 27/10/2018 13:04

Chilli plant or similar x

Letsgetreadytorumba · 27/10/2018 13:08

Glad it’s of interest etino!

NOT an oxfam goat!! I would not be happy about feeling responsible for an animal being used to sustain a family - sorry!

Look at animal charities like the Brooke which is a charity for donkey care.

National animal welfare trust (NAWT) also do great work.

Most charites sell gifts, I'd go with ond of them.

Maybe consider Cats protection league if she likes cats.

WakeUpSlow · 27/10/2018 13:21

How about a Himalayan salt lamp?

Avegemitesandwich · 27/10/2018 13:22

If you can't wear wool or silk or leather because they are animal products, and cotton is out because its not sustainable, then surely all you are left with are man made fibres which are essentially plastic aren't they?

Shadowboy · 27/10/2018 13:23

She knits? Surely that’s not vegan (if wool) if acrylic surely that’s not environmentally sustainable?

Anyway, how about looking at some water aid vouchers/sponsorship - probably the most important thing out there. Additionally make sure all gifts are rainforest alliance or fair trade.

Shadowboy · 27/10/2018 13:23

Hemp is sustainable.

Moreisnnogedag · 27/10/2018 13:54

For those saying no wool items the woman knits. I presume she’s not using acrylic so would be ok with wool based gifts.

PurpleDaisies · 27/10/2018 14:23

WHy? I knit with acrylic all the time. Confused

TheClitterati · 27/10/2018 15:55

I would think twice about giving any gift st all. Personally I'd rather not have gifts.

If you must give a gift something stick to consumables or similar. Voucher for yarn is a good idea.

OatsBeansBarley · 27/10/2018 15:57

The only thing that came to mind was a plant in a compostable container!

rivierliedje · 27/10/2018 16:22

There are fibers other than wool and acrylic to knit with! Cotton springs to mind (especially if organic), all kinds of hemp, linen, bamboo etc.
A well chosen charity gift would be lovely (birth certificate definitely more likely to go down well than donkey)
Or, depending on how much you want to spend, could you get her an experience of some sort? TIckets to something, a day out etc? That's not a thing and can make a really lovely gift.

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 27/10/2018 16:30

You can get bamboo yarn.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/10/2018 16:39

Bubble bath in glass bottles. I'm trying to cut down on plastic and bubble bath is something I'm really missing. The brands that are packaged in glass are too expensive to buy all the time, so would be a huge treat for me.

Book token

I've heard good things about a recipe book called '15 Minute Vegan', although I haven't tried it yet. There's also the Bosch book.

Gift vouchers for somewhere like here for vegan treats, toiletries and make up?

grumiosmum · 27/10/2018 17:19

If she is into knitting (and isn't averse to wool) I would buy her some natural-dyed organic wool or a kit, such as this: www.northumbrianorganicwool.co.uk

The best gifts for environmentally-conscious people are either consumables (food, toiletries in recyclable/reusable packaging) or wearables. Not 'stuff' for the sake of it.

Also you could look at organic seeds/plants grown in the UK.

grumiosmum · 27/10/2018 17:20

Something made from organic cotton is also nice.

percheron67 · 27/10/2018 17:25

Runnynose. Sorry, but a terrible idea. The poor animals sent to drought ridden countries have a short and dreadful life and a very distressing death. Fine to help people who don't have much but to deliberately place an animal in danger is not the way to help.

grumiosmum · 27/10/2018 17:30

Oxfam-type 'goats' are not really goats - they are just a way of making a donation to the charity to help them do their work.

April2020mom · 27/10/2018 17:33

What about organic food or a thoughtfully selected plant from a local garden centre? Or a coffee maker.
