Coloured Christmas Tree Lights- yay or nay?

I wanted to do a quick survey on everyone’s opinion on Christmas tree lights to pre-empt DH’s and I’s annual ding-dong re. Classy v tat.

I think the only acceptable lights for a tree are warm white lights. We have an eclectic collection of baubles etc, and I like to keep the lights low key to avoid it looking like a toddler has taken charge of decorations.

DH is blind prefers coloured lights, preferably searingly bright and blinking really fast.

Am I wrong?

I hate coloured lights.

heatherscot · 11/10/2018 22:52

Warm white lights look beautiful and classy but I LOVE multicoloured lights providing they aren't flashing on and off. Multicouloured is fun and awesome look for xmas if you dont go crazy with the other decor. Flashing lights are very annoying and the classy warm white can end up being a bit dull if the rest of decor is matchy matchy

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 11/10/2018 22:53

coloured are so pretty
no to blinking/twinkling/flashing though

sophisticatedsarcasm · 11/10/2018 22:54

We have multicoloured lights from woolies. Got them the month before it went down, having worked for them. And that was to replace another set we’d had for years from there. Won’t be getting rid of them anytime soon. IMO plain is boring 😊

DramaAlpaca · 11/10/2018 22:57

In the sitting room at the front of the house we have a classy tree with white lights & colour coordinated decorations which looks beautiful.

In the little TV room at the back we have a fabulously garish one with coloured lights and - wait for it- tinsel!! It's gaudy & I love it but I don't want the neighbours to see it

I can't bear flashing lights though, static ones only. I do have some standards Wink

Fucksgiven · 11/10/2018 22:57

I used to be the taste police. Now I embrace the colours because I like Christmas a bit tacky

PrivateParkin · 11/10/2018 22:58

I prefer coloured lights if and only if, they are those lovely warm pastel-ly ones from my 80s childhood Grin and not LED ones which I find too bright and cold. Blue is not a colour that should be included in Christmas fairy lights, imho.

Warm white are nice enough though. If it's a choice between LED colours and warm white, I would definitely go with warm white.

PrivateParkin · 11/10/2018 23:01

sophisticatedsarcasm fellow ex-Woolies employee here. I still have some lights from there too, they're ancient now and still going strong, touch wood.

IAmRubbishAtDIY · 11/10/2018 23:02

Warm white is beautiful.

Coloured is beautiful but not flashing, not LED and definitely not blue. Blue is for the police and ambulances.

EyeDrops · 11/10/2018 23:05

Naaah I'm all about the colour and garishness. It's Christmas! Coloured lights, tinsel, bells, totally mis-matched collection of baubles accumulated over the years. It's fabulous and makes me happy.

ChinUpShouldersBack · 11/10/2018 23:08

Coloured though not LED and static only. I have these

Tasteful isn't something I require Christmas to be Smile

Lucylocket13 · 11/10/2018 23:10

Where is the best place to get warm white lights from?

PrivateParkin · 11/10/2018 23:11

EyeDrops yes I have mismatched stuff as well, I love bits that have been accumulated over the years... but I just don't go for LEDs. It's mostly the blue I don't get on with. I like retro.

Meet0nTheIedge · 11/10/2018 23:17

It's coloured all the way here, warm white are dull and cold white are icy.

LegArmpits · 11/10/2018 23:20

Old Pifco coloured lights for the childhood experience. ❤️

Mustang27 · 11/10/2018 23:22

Warm white all the way!!

My hubby likes the bright blue flashing lights that induce fits and make you feel like an extra on casualty

Icepinkeskimo · 11/10/2018 23:25

I think we are sanitising the fun and frivolity of Christmas by believing that white lights are now 'classy'.

I love coloured lights, on a tree on a cold dark night, they are like fun filled drops of joy, for everyone to enjoy. We should embrace colour on this festive occasion, let our imaginations run wild, and celebrate the festive season. Who cares what the neighbours think? Hmm don't conform or be the norm (boring!) Your lights should lift your spirits, there are to many beige days in the year let's light up the houses in a multi coloured explosion of celebration.

So yes the retro multi coloured beauties will be shining bright in my house, to remind me even though I've had a terrible year brighter times are ahead.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 11/10/2018 23:28

Big yay.

But you can't get ones as fabulous as we had when I was little. They were frost flowers - every colour, not just the basic ones but pink, orange, turquoise, purple. And sack flower had silver glitter around the edge. Absolutely magical (to an easily impressed 1980s child).

lancaster · 11/10/2018 23:29

Coloured lights all the way

bananasandwicheseveryday · 11/10/2018 23:35

I find white lights boring. I am not a fan of 'classy' trees - I much prefer my tree which is full of decorations purchased over the length of our marriage, usually to commemorate a special event or as a memento of a happy time or place. We have coloured lights w hi ich just add to the warmth.

DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel · 11/10/2018 23:36

Yay to multicoloured!

PrivateParkin · 11/10/2018 23:37

We had gorgeous Pifco Cinderella fairy lights when we were little. My mum and dad have still got them and they still work (new bulbs, obvs, as they were bought in the 70s/80s). They cost a bomb on eBay nowadays!!

PrivateParkin · 11/10/2018 23:38

Here are the little beauties

Coloured Christmas Tree Lights- yay or nay?
CherryPavlova · 11/10/2018 23:47

No. Warm white lights only.

Grandadwasthatyou · 11/10/2018 23:47

I love warm white lights, both for the tree and outdoors. However I'm finding it more and more difficult to find warm rather then bright white lights.
Last year our local garden centre had not one single set of warm white. And when I found somewhere that did I was so disappointed when I switched them on. They still weren't the lovely yellow warm glow that I wanted.
