Coloured Christmas Tree Lights- yay or nay?

I wanted to do a quick survey on everyone’s opinion on Christmas tree lights to pre-empt DH’s and I’s annual ding-dong re. Classy v tat.

I think the only acceptable lights for a tree are warm white lights. We have an eclectic collection of baubles etc, and I like to keep the lights low key to avoid it looking like a toddler has taken charge of decorations.

DH is blind prefers coloured lights, preferably searingly bright and blinking really fast.

Am I wrong?

I love the coloured lights from childhood, soft and warm. I use warm white led now as can’t stand coloured led, especially blue. American films always have nice big coloured bulbs. I hate led and would like to go back to coloured. But can’t find any acceptable bulbs.

privateparkin had it on the first page:
I prefer coloured lights if and only if, they are those lovely warm pastel-ly ones from my 80s childhood and not LED ones which I find too bright and cold. Blue is not a colour that should be included in Christmas fairy lights, imho
I had a lovely set of old style coloured ones which took me right back to the wonder of a 70s Christmas - but I got worried that they would set the tree alight so bought some LED replacements. They're so harsh and bright and the colours are all wrong (where's the pink and the orange?).
I think what I will do this year is use mainly soft white LED with the old string of coloured lights to be switched on for atmosphere when we're in close attendance. But if anyone sees real rainbow LED lights, do let me know.

Amazon sell Noma Cantabury Bells with a 'these bulbs do get hot warning'. I have got some LED multicoloured bells that I put up in my kitchen that aren't bad colour wise although I can't remember where they are from (sure they are Noma).

Coloured are the best in my opinion! Not the blinking flashing ones though x

Oldraver · 16/10/2018 19:43

I love coloured ones, I dont care if they are not considered 'classy' --like an ex friend said.

The last few years we have had four small sets ans the ols ones went days before Christmas and they were all we could get...OH has a stress trying and failing to syncronise them.

Ive seen some at work, yes they are multi-coloured led...dont care Grin

dudsville · 16/10/2018 19:46

We veere between "classy" and colourful. Alternate your trees? One year one way the next year the other? It's a really easy way of giving everyone the Christmas tree they love!

Parttimewasteoftime · 16/10/2018 20:31

Love it all any colour lights mis matched decs and lots of homemade stuff by the Ds's. You can't make me be classy bloody love Christmas 🎄

cojmum · 16/10/2018 21:22

Warm white here, on a real tree. Can't wait!

LeMesmer · 17/10/2018 00:27

I am very classy 😂, but I love colored lights. Christmas lights and trees should be big and brash. If you want tasteful and subtle lights you really shouldn’t do them at all.

ipswichmum · 17/10/2018 11:02

Sipperskipper your tree looks lovely, especially in your bay window. I to like multi coloured lights. I have the multi functional lights so can have static or twinkling. Ooh getting excited now 🤗🎄🎅🏼

If people are still looking for less aggressively coloured lights I found these in Sainsbo's today. I've got them home and the picture on the link is pretty accurate (my crappy phone can't capture them well). They're still not as good as proper 1980s ones, but the best I could find at a reasonable price.

SleepySofa · 02/12/2018 12:54

Warm white on the tree (and on the tree in the garden). Coloured in the orangery (along with the fibre optic coloured tree, holly leaf light features and flashing cool white lights - that’s DP’s tacky grotto).

greendale17 · 02/12/2018 12:54

No, looks dated and tacky

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 02/12/2018 12:59

Warm white for us, but our baubles are a mix of lots of different colours so coloured lights would be too much. We have some new 'firefly' twinkly lights which are lovely.

Flashing coloured lights would be a no from me, but the tree with coloured lights posted earlier looks lovely.

riotlady · 02/12/2018 13:24

Coloured lights all the way! And tinsel and totally mismatched baubles.

When I live in a house instead of a flat, I’ll probably get some sort of inflatable reindeer to put outside, I’m team tacky all the way!

Pascha · 02/12/2018 13:52

I've just picked up these berry lights from Dobbies which are quite soft light, the red is more pink and the yellow is more orange. They do look nice on my little tree.

There's definitely a gap in the market for the softer, 80s coloured lights! Is there a scientific reason why it can't be done with LED? or do the manufacturers think we don't want it anymore? I held on to my old set as long as possible. But now I have warm white LED on the tree.

Sunisshining5346 · 02/12/2018 22:25

No!!

JemSynergy · 03/12/2018 00:09

I like them, they remind me of my childhood. The children put the coloured lights on their tree but on our main tree we have warm white.

JaneJeffer · 03/12/2018 01:27

Yay

GlitterPixie · 03/12/2018 01:39

Coloured lights all the way for me white lights are nice but they aren’t proper Christmas tree lights to me
