Coloured Christmas Tree Lights- yay or nay?

I wanted to do a quick survey on everyone’s opinion on Christmas tree lights to pre-empt DH’s and I’s annual ding-dong re. Classy v tat.

I think the only acceptable lights for a tree are warm white lights. We have an eclectic collection of baubles etc, and I like to keep the lights low key to avoid it looking like a toddler has taken charge of decorations.

DH is blind prefers coloured lights, preferably searingly bright and blinking really fast.

Am I wrong?

I pile 100 coloured (but not LED) lights ( including blue!) from Wilko on a small tree, plus tinsel and icicles, plus homemade decorations plus vintage glass baubles.
It's always in front of the window and if it snows I feel so cozy looking at it, having a sherry and watching xmas films Smile
Christmas is not a time for being classy or trendy, it's about celebrating colour warmth and light.

Last year I saw loads of trees with red lights Xmas Shock .
No No No , all shades of wring.

Blue lights - always think there's a Police car.

Love the warm white
Quite like coloured lights but not pink or turquoise.

DH bought "warm amber" lights they were bloody orange !

A few years ago I’d have agreed with you OP. But now I have a fondness for 80s tat and vintage decorations. I think warm white is a beautiful and classic choice but nowadays I want to indulge in Childhood memories.

Alanamackree · 12/10/2018 07:22

Can anyone recommend a brand of coloured lights that are soft and have pinks and purples instead of reds and blues?

KC225 · 12/10/2018 07:26

Yay for me. But I preferred the 70s 80s one where the bulbs had to be tested and they would get hotter than the sun and your mum would be frightened they would burn the house down. The colours seemed softer and more twinkly than the LED colours.

Sipperskipper · 12/10/2018 07:31

I love coloured lights, but not modern LED ones - too bright. Last year we bought loads of old glass & foil ones, like we had as kids. They looked fantastic, but kept breaking!

Back to warm white this year, but here’s a pic of last year’s.

I prefer warm white for my own artificial tree. Friends have coloured on their real tree and it looks lovely and not tacky so each to their own.
I think coloured look nice on a tree with less decorations and all different decorations.

LavenderBush · 12/10/2018 07:43

Warm white vote here (especially if your decorations are eclectic).

I'm kind of torn about colours in Christmas tree decorations... I don't want a giant clashing plastic tackfest going on in the corner of my living room, but on the other hand I hate those matchy-matchy soulless coordinated ones that look like they were done by a robot.

cushioncuddle · 12/10/2018 08:53

I have green lights. They bring out the decorations and the green of the tree.

My decs are a mix collected over the years and I wanted them to shine out so different ones caught peoples eye.

If I didn't have green it would have been coloured. So pretty.

Mustang27 · 12/10/2018 09:03

@Sipperskipper that tree is beautiful how tall was it. I might deviate and go for coloured this year I think my kids might like it.

apostropheuse · 12/10/2018 09:08

White lights are no less tacky than coloured lights, which are the epitome of Christmas! I love coloured lights (but not LED). I hate matchy matchy trees; ours is an eclectic collection of meaningful, nostalgia-inducing, tack. I love it!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 12/10/2018 09:15

Where do you all get non LED lights? I really struggled last year, and I'm not that happy with the ones I got.

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 12/10/2018 09:23

Yes red lights are just perverted. Green lights sound lovely though!

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 12/10/2018 09:24

I'd also be really keen to find out if anyone can recommend any soft/non LED coloured lights. Our 20 yo hand-me-down ones gave up last year, and I couldn't see any I liked.

This^^ I cant find them anywhere our tree is big so small boxes of 100 wont cut it.

@Sipperskipper, your tree is gorgeous, where did you get the lights?

Meet0nTheIedge · 12/10/2018 09:36

Well, not only do I like coloured lights, I much prefer LEDs to the old-fashioned soft-coloured sort, which are too wishy-washy for me, not as bad as warm white, but I do love my bright LEDs, and really like that they have blue amongst them.

Witchonastick · 12/10/2018 09:41

We always had coloured lights, then one year I decided to go ‘classy’ and bought a load of warm white.
I have to say I thought it looked quite dull. So now we stick to coloured.

BiddyPop · 12/10/2018 10:20

I have no problem with coloured lights, although I prefer warm white ones.

But on no account should they "flash". Slow gentle brightening and dimming perhaps, but not fast blinking. And not searingly bright either - gentle background light is what's needed to offset the decorations and just give some depth to the tree.

toomuchtooold · 12/10/2018 10:32

Coloured. And tinsel. But we have 6 year old girls, so defer in our design judgement to them. You can hardly see the tree for baubles usually Grin

WeakAsIAm · 12/10/2018 10:36

Naaah I'm all about the colour and garishness. It's Christmas! Coloured lights, tinsel, bells, totally mis-matched collection of baubles accumulated over the years. It's fabulous and makes me happy.

^ this^

civicxx · 12/10/2018 10:36

I hate coloured lights. I use white LED for the tree x

BlueOooChristmas · 12/10/2018 11:20

Hah! This with jingle bells on. Wink

Our eldest has started recognising certain decorations that we pull out each year. Including baubles from when I was a child. Her favourite last year was a Santa I got in my stocking as a kid. He has a suction cup on his hat and once upon a time he could be bounced up and down to make a squeaking sound. He still wheezily squeaks but too much bouncing would pull his hat off. He was carefully placed towards the top of the tree on a short and sturdy branch. It's tat but tat that contains lovely happy memories. I find colour coordinated trees/baubles utterly soulless. So unsurprisingly my vote is for coloured lights. It's once a year, who gives a stuff what the neighbours think? Hmm

catshart · 12/10/2018 13:03

I have coloured ones and warm white on my tree Grin

TailEndCharlie · 12/10/2018 13:40

Warm white lights only. Ever. And not bloody flashing. Anything coloured just looks like you are stuck in a really tacky arcade. Not festive at all.
