Coloured Christmas Tree Lights- yay or nay?

I wanted to do a quick survey on everyone’s opinion on Christmas tree lights to pre-empt DH’s and I’s annual ding-dong re. Classy v tat.

I think the only acceptable lights for a tree are warm white lights. We have an eclectic collection of baubles etc, and I like to keep the lights low key to avoid it looking like a toddler has taken charge of decorations.

DH is blind prefers coloured lights, preferably searingly bright and blinking really fast.

Am I wrong?

Coloured lights, and tinsel as well.

CrazyBaubles · 12/10/2018 13:55

I had the same dilemma 2 or 3 years ago and was watching a similar thread. A very wise and lovely poster on here said she had a set of both on the tree and would switch on white, coloured or both depending on what they fancied that day. I do that now - I love it 🎄

Arrowfanatic · 12/10/2018 18:57

I had warm white ones for years and they broke on Xmas eve. Mad dash to the shops (after having to take down the tree to get all the lights off) and all I could find were led coloured lights with a selection of different flashing patterns and you know what I BLOODY LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!! So fun and colourful and bright and the kids think they're better too. I'll never go back to boring white lights again.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/10/2018 22:36

The style police say white only, but IMO you should have what the hell you like. Christmas trees don't need to be 'stylish'.

Since it's been hard or impossible to find the old fashioned, soft and twinkly coloured lights, we've always had warm white, but I do love the old fashioned coloured ones. I find the modern, LED coloured ones so harsh by comparison. Did buy a set a couple of years ago but couldn't bear them - they went to the charity shop.

ohamIreally · 13/10/2018 07:03

Ah those Pifco Cinderella ones! We had those and I loved them as a child!

Sipperskipper · 13/10/2018 07:08

Our coloured ones were from amazon, to PP wh asked.

Methe · 13/10/2018 07:11

I always have coloured but can see that warm white look nice too.

My rules are no blue and no led!

Methe · 13/10/2018 07:12

A very wise and lovely poster on here said she had a set of both on the tree and would switch on white, coloured or both depending on what they fancied that day

That is an amazing idea!

PinkAvocado · 13/10/2018 07:30

Anyone who thinks Christmas trees can be classy are kidding themselves Grin

I used to just like white but now love colourful ones. I hate colour coordinated trees or worse, plain white and silver trees. The pp’s tree with the colourful lights on looks much more festive!

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 13/10/2018 07:38

Coloured 70s style here too. With all the family "heirloom" old baubles.

White ones with the (usually) coordinated red/white or white/gold baubles just look to me like a JL window dresser did it to be attractive, but very safe.

Blue led ones should be banned.

My Gran used to have those Cinderella ones and every year I say I'm going to get some from eBay. Then every year I can't bring myself to spend about £200 on them!

theboxofdelights · 13/10/2018 07:41

I have always had warm white but I have to say I think coloured are more fun and I am very tempted! My tree is not remotely themed or matchy and has a collection of very different baubles collected over thirty years spewed all over it.

I do have warm white candle lights which are really lovely but might add a set of multi coloured leds this year.

Jaxtellerswife · 13/10/2018 07:47

We have classy Christmas in the living room and crazy colour Christmas in the dining room. As December progresses more things are bought and set up so it becomes crazy everywhere.
Having a stressful time at the moment but thinking about this has made me smileSmile
(No, I can't get the decorations out. No. It's too soon...noGrin)

Sunnyhazyday · 13/10/2018 07:48

I started to feel thst white lights are a bit dated.
They were a big big thing for many years but more recently multi coloured seem go the thing.
I have sets of both but have opted for multi coloured in recent years.

BertramKibbler · 13/10/2018 07:50

We have flashing, multicoloured lights, tinsel, children crafted decorations and an assortment of random decorations we’ve collected from around the world. Classy it’s not. Pretty fabulous though

Bestseller · 13/10/2018 07:53

I don't think there any such thing as a classy Christmas tree and those who try end up with something far more naff than someone with a cheerful colourful tree.

I can't imagine anything sadder than a home where the kids aren't allowed to throw on as much naff tatt as they can. I thought my friend was joking when she said for DC aren't allowed to help decorate the tree but apparently, that's common place.

toomuchtooold · 13/10/2018 08:33

Bestseller my SIL does that. I think the kids have an own tree in their bedroom or something, but the main one is done tastefully and with a limited colour palette. I mean, it's stylishly done, but even then it's so forgettable - it wouldn't look out of place in an upmarket shopping centre. I think it is a shame because the kids won't be young forever and I think those trees groaning with school-made angels and slightly tatty heirlooms and pink and purple tinsel because they saw it in B&Q and you were like "fuck it, why not" are the ones you remember most fondly.

GoldenBuns · 13/10/2018 08:45

Multi-coloured, every time. I hate colour co-ordinated trees. We go for full on coloured bling with lots of sparkle. I think in my head, I have a picture of one of those Christmas trees I used to make when I was little - the kind where your throats is itching from too much glitter and there's bits of tin foil everywhere...

Alanamackree · 13/10/2018 08:47

A very wise and lovely poster on here said she had a set of both on the tree and would switch on white, coloured or both depending on what they fancied that day

genius! I think I’ll do that this year.

Inthetropics · 13/10/2018 08:50

I have both colloured and plain warm ones. I draw the line at blue lights..

Tara336 · 13/10/2018 08:51

I like white but don’t mind either, just not those garish blue ones

80sMum · 13/10/2018 09:01

I switched from coloured lights to white lights about 10 years ago; they made a refreshing change after having used coloured lights for 15 years. Now I'm beginning to drift back to a bit of colour, but not multicoloured so far. I agree about blue lights though; they just don't seem right for Christmas.

Momasita · 13/10/2018 09:24

My Xmas tree oozes class 🙄 and it's fairly mis matched and has theme of enchanted tree nutcracker running through it. It's classy and I'm not kidding myself.
It's Devine and there is always something hidden or new or gorgeous to draw the eye in.

The materials I use to dress it are inspired by roh the nutcracker.... Dark red velvets etc.

Any how... 😂😂 I have the softest warm light I could find in glaring white strip light led hell... But... My heart is lusting after the woollies nostalgic coloured glass ones!!

I may have one string of those noma this year... Perhaps close to tree trunk.. As well as warm white..

YeTalkShiteHen · 13/10/2018 09:28

We have warm white lights on the “proper” tree in the dining room (no space in the living room) but the bairns have a tree in their playroom and it looks like a rainbow threw up Grin

Their tree, their choices

YeTalkShiteHen · 13/10/2018 09:29

Ironically it’s at the front, so the neighbours can only see the hideous rainbow explosion tree, not my pretty colour coordinated (red, gold and red tartan) tree at the back door!

PodgeBod · 13/10/2018 09:33

Momasita That sounds gorgeous, maybe you could post a picture when you put it up?
