Problems with online food shops - anyone else?

Newdad19 · 22/12/2017 19:19

Anyone else had any dramas this year with their online christmas food shop?

We booked our ASDA delivery slot weeks ago for tomorrow, went today to add our amended trolley to it for the final shop.... and it kept forcing to book a new slot?!

Called up customer services and they told me that I apparently can only amend my order one week in advance. 🙄

In the end I had to clear my trolley of £100 worth of stuff and start a fresh in a new browser window to get it to work! It was a close one but we were nearly having £40 worth of baby milk for Christmas dinner!

I'll be honest and say I don't know how any of you put up with the angst of online shopping.

I've tried it and it's so damn frustrating.

It's not the technology (I work in IT!) it's the stuff they send.

Yes it's fine for tinned goods, boxed goods etc but anything fresh is rarely great.

I like to choose my own veg/meat etc rather than get some random item thrown in.

Doing that before Christmas and not knowing what I would get would send me into a meltdown.

I've eschewed the big supermarkets this year (for the first time) and shopped locally. It's been a revelation.

My DM was bemoaning how her local Tesco had sold out of any decent fruit/veg yet my local small Co-op was brimming with lovely fresh produce. The meat from the butcher in the next village has been ordered to pick up tomorrow.

I've got everything for Christmas Eve, Day and Boxing Day (for 10 people) within a mile of home admittedly with the exception of gravy browning which my DM is going to bring to top up the last dribbles in my bottle.

I'm not being sanctimonious, I've just been surprised by how much easier it's been than online shopping or big supermarket shops.

Sainsbury's fresh stuff is usually fine; I rarely have issues. The benefit of online shopping (not having to go to the shop) far outweigh any slight negatives. We also don't have a big Sainsbury's here (yet; one is being built soon), so the stock choice is better online than in the little store we have.

Horses for courses.

Asda are shit.

Tesco delivered everything for me - the two subs were for the same items I’d ordered but larger quantities (win!) and the only unavailable item was a dessert and it’s easy to sort that out. Didn’t finish amending until about 9pm Wednesday night and it was delivered yesterday afternoon. I really love tesco online, have tried all the online delivery services, except Morrison’s as they don’t cover here yet, and Tesco are by far the best quality and price IMO.

Sallystyle · 22/12/2017 22:49

Yes, this will definitely be my last year of online Christmas shopping.

bringonthesunn · 22/12/2017 22:51

I was pleasantly surprised, only substitution was for a larger Tesco Finest ham

Blackbutler86 · 22/12/2017 22:52

I'm crossing my fingers my shop will all be fine as it's coming Christmas Eve morning. I use Amazon Fresh and love it, it has saved me so much money. In the year I've been using them I've only had to ring up about a missing item and a couple broken items. I've had 2 things subbed and they give them to you free.

Ps. If anyone is getting an order from them over the next couple days check the flash sale they have on right now as some veg has gone down really cheap and they have things like packs of fresh chicken breasts down to 99p.

Newdad19 · 22/12/2017 22:52

Looks like Im not the only one who has had some drama then but sounds like marks did well in store.

We will see tomorrow when the order comes I guess...

Ocado was 2 hrs late last week, and was going to be 3 hrs late last night eg after midnight! So I had to cancel :(

Rankellior · 23/12/2017 06:12

I was due a Tesco delivery today but judging by the amount of items that became unavailable whenever I went to amend it (including my Baileys pouring cream Xmas Angry) I cancelled it and went to shop where I could at least choose my substitutions and didn’t panic that nothing would come today.

I get Tesco every week and actually it’s ok, I think I just booked my slot too late and panicked! Still fridge stocked, jobs a good un

HardAssSanta · 23/12/2017 08:33

Ocado here yesterday, one sub (different flavour cat food) and no pickled onions.

martellandginger · 23/12/2017 08:42

I think if people have ordered grates of bubbly or clearly not ordered a standard shop of food then people were being rung up and told to sort it out. Reason being everyone was putting just enough alcohol or nappies or whatever just to reserve the slot. Well if thousands of people of do this then how can the supermarkets get enough supply in quick enough when the demand changes.

I ordered a family members Christmas food shop 6 weeks ago and have amended it twice and I had the option to do this up to midnight the day before a 3pm delivery. All was good.

YellowPrimula · 23/12/2017 08:44

Ocado today , no subs and all arrived on time , did have to edit order by 10.30 on Wednesday rather than the night before but I think that is reasonable

RoseDog · 23/12/2017 08:48

My Tesco order is coming today, this thread is making me anxious!!

MummaGiles · 23/12/2017 08:51

Sainsbury’s shop arrived yesterday morning. A couple of short shelf life items (could be frozen so no big deal) and two very inconsequential substitutions. Delivery driver talked me through them all. Have used Sainsbury’s delivery for a couple of years and on the whole they are great. Think it depends where your shopping happens to get picked from though.

Perpetualstateofchaos · 23/12/2017 08:55

My whole order got cancelled because of a technical glitch I don't find out til I went to collect it. I ended up having to go and get it all the next day as it couldn't be rearranged or my order downloaded for them to pick it

cornishmumtobe · 23/12/2017 09:04

Tesco came yesterday. No subs. Great dates. Cheery driver. Winner!

Newdad19 · 23/12/2017 09:19

Wow perpetual thats not good.

Order just arrived, 6 substitutes but all reasonable (2x500g flora instead of a 1x1kg etc). Came on time as well.

Panic over 🎅

I had my Waitrose order yesterday and had ordered one of the Waitrose entertaining pork joints (this is a special order and cannot be amended less than 7 days before delivery as it’s ordered in specially)
Anyway, I received the on line receipt before my delivery came and said pork joint was not available and there were no substitutions available either(?)
I had a hissy fit on the phone to them, couldn’t get through to the local branch as they were busy so called the 0800 helpline number
They arranged for branch to call me back, which they did
Miraculously my joint of pork had no appeared and was delivered with the rest of my order
Don’t even know how they were able o produce it all of a sudden but at least I got it...oh, they didn’t charge for it either as it was their error

Nanasueathome · 23/12/2017 09:26

Joint of pork had now appeared that should say

ShoeJunkie · 23/12/2017 09:30

Picked up my Tesco click and collect on Thursday - only sub was organic bananas instead of regular.

SomethingPhishy · 23/12/2017 09:32

I am wanting to hide this thread - Asda are supposed to be delivering later & I was amending all week up to 7pm last night. The selection boxes & cheese straws are out of stock so I changed them but too nervous to look anymore. It worked well last year. Good luck to us all!

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 23/12/2017 09:35

I gave up on ASDA after they just cancelled my Xmas Eve order, on the day. - no reason at all, no communication with me, and kept the £150 for 3-5 working days while it refunded. They couldn’t understand why that was an issue, didn’t see that not everybody had an additional £150 to replace the stuff for Christmas Day.

Switched to sainsburys after that, who delivered 30seconds into my slot this morning, no subs.

Sallystyle · 23/12/2017 09:45

I just got an email from ASDA with my subs

Red cabbage is now a couple of potatoes.

Stuffing is sausages

Cheese board is 4 blocks of stilton

WeirdCatLady · 23/12/2017 09:56

Tesco’s are hopefully delivering Christmas in the next hour. Fingers crossed 😳

ItMadeMyEyesWater · 23/12/2017 10:03

Cecily, which Tesco was this? I'm due a Tesco delivery between 2am-3am.
