What are you having to eat on Christmas Eve?

I’ll have 5 on Xmas eve and 12 Xmas day so I don’t want to go overboard on Xmas eve. We are going to a carol service and I was thinking a chilli or bolognese once we get back. Would you be happy with that or is it not special enough?

We also have the Christmas Eve takeaway tradition - usually Chinese, but maybe Indian. Followed by evening snacking on crisps, chocs, cheese, whatever is in arm's reach (am 18 weeks pregnant and am literally a bottomless pit right now). I spend weeks looking forward to the big Xmas eve takeaway! Grin

Lasagne here as well but with veg rather than salad as ds1 is very fussy! I usually work on Christmas Eve so making a lasagne in advance is the eaay option. I'm not working this Sunday but still doing lasagne.

OutToGetYou · 22/12/2017 14:45

My fave is baked potato with baked camembert.

GogoGobo · 22/12/2017 15:10

Dim sum and Thai prawns to start and then a Malaysian Chicken Curry and blueberry cheesecake!
Like the idea of a takeaway but we live rurally and there is nothing really within 40 minutes drive other than a fish and chip shop (and we’re having that tonight!)

SleightOfMind · 22/12/2017 18:36

We’ve got champagne from DH’s boss so we’re having seafood to go with it.
Luckily the little DC are entranced by eating things with legs and the teens like their seafood so everyone will be happy.

Ham, takeaway, meatloaf, cold cuts & Swiss fondue have been good in previous years though.

Taffeta · 22/12/2017 18:38

We are having a massive party on 23rd and are out at pub early evening on 24th so will likely have canapé leftovers when we get in.

Lisamac1988 · 22/12/2017 22:41

Where off to my mums Christmas so it will be a buffet.

Aducknotallama · 22/12/2017 22:45

Going out for a meal so will have steak and chips probably. If we were at home we would have a picky tea with cheeses, cold meats, crusty bread etc

Bouledeneige · 22/12/2017 22:45

Fish and chips from the chippy

madmother1 · 22/12/2017 23:07

My teens have requested a fajita night 😁

PasDeDeux · 22/12/2017 23:37

Either take away fish and chips or lasagne :)

wendz86 · 23/12/2017 06:34

Buffet lunch and sweet and sour pork for dinner .

happilyeverafta · 23/12/2017 06:44

Steaks, asparagus & thick chips probably. Starter of moules mariniere.

I'm
Cooking the ham Xmas eve though in preparation for the big day so I'll prob have a few slices of that too!

Oh & obvs prosecco.

Easilyflattered · 23/12/2017 09:20

Another lasagne here. We take our kids outside as much as possible on Christmas Eve, so that they're ready for bed and not hyper.

Littlelambpeep · 23/12/2017 09:25

I don't think I would do a chill and it is something you have mid week but gammon and some nice sides would be lovely

Notreallyarsed · 23/12/2017 09:30

We’re doing cheese toasties with salad for tea, because the kids have popcorn and hot chocolate after baths/showers while watching a Christmas film.
Plus Christmas Day involves a massive cooked breakfast and then obviously dinner so a light tea is just the ticket on Christmas Eve.

ShowOfHands · 23/12/2017 09:35

I haven't read the thread yet as there's the risk of 75 "picky teas"

How many this time? Do I risk it?

bookbook · 23/12/2017 09:35

Chicken and leek pie with puff pastry and veg. Just ordinary tea tbh
The mince pies will be started on , along with christmas cake though. :)

HelenaJustina · 23/12/2017 09:36

Same as notreally keeping it light. Soup and homemade soda bread. I’ve got so much other food prep to do that I’m not spending hours making something spectacular.

Everythingwillbeok · 23/12/2017 09:45

Ham in coke, with loads of muffins, a bowl of stuffing, some apple sauce, cranberry jelly, mint sauce, with crisps & a yule log with Bailey's cream to finish

gingercat02 · 23/12/2017 09:46

Out for lunch, Carol service and mulled wine and snacks when we get home. Perfect apart from the frantic wrapping after bedtime

Alliaskforisthis · 23/12/2017 09:55

Home made from Tom Kerridge's book potted ham, prawns and pork pie. With a cheese board ! (And as much champagne as I fancy)

ItsChristmoose · 23/12/2017 09:58

Our tradition is a buffet. I've just got good bread, chicken liver parfait, tepanade, mini chicken kievs, Peking duck, olives, artichokes etc

Peachypie83 · 23/12/2017 11:07

Thank you. Do I add liquid to the slow cooker? Does it fall apart like pulled pork?

allegretto · 23/12/2017 11:11

We always have fish so spaghetti with clams and prawn skewers.
