AliceDMumsnet · 13/12/2017 16:53

Hello all,

Virgin Wines are offering Mumsnetters a crate of 12 bottles of wine - plus a free bottle of prosecco worth £10.99 and free delivery - for £59.88 (was £119.88).

You can order your Christmas selection here.

NB: This offer includes a no-obligation membership to WineBank

Quick reminder of how this works: we've selected these deals independently by scouring the web for bargains that we think MNers will love. We do, though, get a small referral % if you happen to buy through these links.

Anyone tried the Virgin wines, any good?

PerfumeIsAMessage · 13/12/2017 18:19

I am after a wine gift for my cousin but don't want him to be spam-mailed forever and a day after...will have a looky at this.

highinthesky · 13/12/2017 18:25

I'd rather spend £60 on wine that I know I'll enjoy than pot luck.

If on the other hand I had 12 people that you don't really like to buy for its a good deal. Keep the prosecco for yourself as a reward.

anothersuitcase · 13/12/2017 18:25

You can just set the account up using your email and send to his delivery address?

anothersuitcase · 13/12/2017 18:26

Sorry that was @PerfumeIsAMessage. I really like the virgin mixed cases.

Lentilbaby · 13/12/2017 18:45

Do you become automatically subscribed if this crate is purchased?

anothersuitcase · 13/12/2017 19:06

You'll get junk email from them but my sister just got this case without signing up to anything further, I told her to go for it as I love virgin wines. Unfortunately loyal customers like me don't get sent nearly such good offers Angry

Icantdancedontaskme · 13/12/2017 19:48

Just ordered. Thank you!

Deleted the above post as it had a screenshoot that showed my account number; but be aware that this offer DOES commit you to joining their wine club, and automatically debits £25 a month.
I cancelled the recurring payment from PayPal, as there didn't seem to be a way to do it on the Virgin site (though you can adjust it down to a fiver a month).

Can you cancel anytime. Although doesn't surprise me that they've hidden the cancellation page! Are the wines nice DuncanDonut

DuncanDonut · 13/12/2017 23:41

No idea! I've only ordered them tonight! There's a choice of wines - mixed/red/white, and I've gone for whites, which sound ok (no Chardonnays, which I hate).

I'll update if I hear back about cancelling the wine club without telling them🍷

akkakk · 13/12/2017 23:55

virgin wines are okay - middle of the road and nothing special...
their offer of 50% off is not all it appears to be - their business model like many other companies is based on an apparent cost and then a discount, in reality there is always an offer, so really the wine should be seen to be the value you pay for it - i.e. you are not really getting much of a bargain... tied to the need to sign up for monthly payments (they rely on the fact that lots of people forget to cancel) and actually it migt not be a good deal at all...

far better taking that budget and pootling off to Lidl or Aldi who ofen do some cracking wines at really low prices - e.g. Toro Loco for 3-4 pounds a bottle

Vitalogy · 14/12/2017 00:21

Oh right, hope you enjoy!

That's the thing, as long as you remember to cancel to be able to take advantage of the original offer.

Fekko · 14/12/2017 07:48

I have ordered these cases (through another discount opportunity) and yes, you do automatically 'join' and get charged fees if you don't cancel.

The wines I've got have been good and very good. I've also ordered my own cases and the staff are brilliant and will discuss choices and selections.

AliceDMumsnet · 14/12/2017 09:49

@DuncanDonut thanks for pointing that out - we've edited the OP

They certainly don't make it clear that it's a subscription system do they? So naughty

Lentilbaby · 14/12/2017 12:28

Thought as much! Seemed far to good to be true!

Fekko · 14/12/2017 12:42

When I first did this I didn't realise and noticed when the money came off my cc. I callled them and used the balance to buy some more nice wine - so the 'club fee' goes to your wine purchases.

DuncanDonut · 14/12/2017 12:45

Is the wine ever as cheap again afterwards though?

Fekko · 14/12/2017 17:13

It's cheaper than shops and they do have some nice things you can't get elsewhere. It's good if you are happy to invest in wine by the crate. They do have special offers and sales often. I usually but them for gifts.

TroubleinDaFamily · 15/12/2017 09:47

I wouldn't buy wine from anyone who calls it a crate.

Fekko · 15/12/2017 09:52

I guess calling it a box of wine has a different connotation!

TroubleinDaFamily · 15/12/2017 10:07

Where I come from it is called a case.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 15/12/2017 11:42

Just a word of warning for anyone placing an order - they are not currently guaranteeing a next day delivery.
I placed an order yesterday as I am at home today so around to take delivery. However, the email that I had confirming the order said it might take "a day or two" longer than expected as they are busy at the moment, weather etc. The status of my order today was still showing as processing so I phoned and cancelled it as I won't be able to take delivery after today.

I am a little bit peeved with Virgin Wines to be honest. There's a line on their website to say there may be delays but it's easily overlooked and under where it says "next day delivery guaranteed if you order by 4pm".

Meh, I will take my Christmas wine money elsewhere!
