Christmas

Is your tree up?

BanyanTree · 16/11/2017 12:12

I usually put my tree up mid Dec but last year it was 01 Dec. However I am sick and tired of browsing in shops only to find that what I want to buy is already out of stock and there will be no more. It seems that people buy all their decorations in Sept and Oct.

I needed to do an inventory of what I have and needed to measure my tree for a skirt ready for a shopping trip tomorrow. I thought sod it, the boxes are out so lets get the tree up.

Anyone else got an early Christmas tree?

I think it's the frustration with people then moaning they are sick of their tree by Boxing Day and want it down

My ds’s Birthday is Boxing Day, and then my two other dc are in early January so Christmas for us IS over by the 26th as we throw ourselves into “Birthday season”. I don’t moan about the sight of it though, it’s just the way we celebrate in our house. So Christmas to us is very much about the lead up beforehand

My tree and devs will go up as late as possible, 22nd/23rd/24th, we're so busy around then that it might taķe a couple of days.

We observe advent (as far as possible. It's hard when the kids are having to do nativity plays and Christmas parties at school).
We'll put the nativity scene out at the start of advent (minus baby J.), and also have and advent wreath with candles on the dinner table. And the inevitable advent calendars.

Tree and decs down sometime after the 6th when the 'feast' is over. But it's often up till the middle of Jan in my house, because i love christmas decs, and the 'season' contiues till the 2nd Feb.

I don't think questioning why people have their trees up in November is " intolerance ". It affects all of us that Christmas is being dragged out across two months.
Even if you don't start decorating, shopping or eating Christmas food the fact that others are does impact us all. The shop and roads are heaving, it's hard to get 'normal" stuff because it's all Christmas themed.
If you go abroad in contrast it's very evident how mad we all are over here.

There's a house on our street that has it up. I think it's a bit early personally.

That'll depend on how you send your letters to Santa. The Royal Mail cut off for a reply is the 8th December, so people might be wanting to get them in early to guarantee a reply.

We’ve just bought ours - delivered 6th Dec. Putting up some of the decorations now though...

The only reason shops are extending the holidays is to make sure they get a good grab at two or three pay packets instead of one.

All this jumping on the halloween/firework/christmas/easter bandwagon is just feeding the greed and giving license to a big helping of as many paydays as possible.

How did we get to a stage where fake trees are a necessity because real ones will not last and supermarket adverts are a topic for discussion? We were manipulated there by companies trying to extract maximum profit.

It's a con!

Ours goes up around 8-9-10th December and comes down on 6th January. Kings Day is celebrated here and the Kings usually bring all the presents, so it is still very festive between 25th December and 12th night. School will be back on 8th January (is that the Monday?).

So we have a month of tree and wreaths and knitivity and Giant Welcome Snowman who trips us up at the front door every day for a month Grin

I must admit i had my Christmas cd on last Saturday as DS and i were making apple crumble! Just cos we like the tunes.

I dunno about that. My fake tree cost £20 from Tesco and is now entering it's 4th year of use. I'd be amazed if I got a nice real tree for that much.

@deepile they were posting them up the chimney!!

When I’m in charge it will be the law that no decorations can go up in public before 1st December at the very least.

Well in that case WipsGlitter that's far too early! I could understand if there was a deadline, or getting a finalised wishlist so that you don't have something sprung on you on the 22nd December, but putting them up the chimney?!

Our 5ft tree was €12 and we bought it in... um... 2006. Paying €40+ a year for a real tree that will get binned early January is a collossal waste of money. And €40 is a huge amount for us to pay, i don't know about anyone else.

I have fond memories of making our first year's decorations for our €12 tree when we were flat broke: martini glasses, snowmen and racy red Victorian governess-type boots all made out of felt. Oh and some feathers Grin

Every year we say 'we must buy a decent tree and get some quality decorations...' but we never do.

It's still in the field waiting to be chopped down on the 16th. So technically. Yes

No I hate having decorations up so mine won't go up before dd breaks up from school and it will be down as soon after Christmas as I can get away with tbh.

And dh asked for it up. Considering he used to be the original Grinch when I met him, I went along with it.

Ours goes up first weekend in December and comes down on New Year's Day (or the day after depending on how hungover we are).
For me, the build up to Christmas Day is more exciting than the actual day!

We live on a crazy Christmas obsessed island and I love it, there are so many events coming up.
We have santa coming to visit the kids in our complex on Friday so we're decorating a grotto in the clubhouse and I will decorate our house the next day.

All my gifts are done, just need to wrap them. I've even started stockpiling chipolatas... Confused
