Is 3.4 too young for playmobil?

I was thinking not the 123 stuff (he'll be too old for that I think?) but the next level up. Says 4+ on the box. Will he be too young?

At the mo he's obsessed with paw patrol and I know this phase will end at some point therefore I don't want to spend more money on it so wanted to guide him in the direction of something with more longevity?

perfect age
maybe put the smallest parts away (like the gold coins) until dc is older.

FreedomMummy · 26/09/2017 21:40

My just turned 3 yr old loves playmobil. We have the camping stuff (car, caravan, tents etc), a dumper truck and the tractor.
As long as they've reached the age of not putting things in their mouth I think you'll be fine.

Katescurios · 26/09/2017 21:43

My LG loves it, she got the caravan for her 3rd birthday from my family, me and DH thought it would be a complete flop but she was obsessed immediately. Plays with her "candyvan" everyday and loves all the other bits we got her.

GlitteryFluff · 26/09/2017 21:57

Perfect, thanks!
Will definitely get some for him this Christmas.
Any recommendations for best ones to go for to start with or are they all pretty similar?

My four year old has some and ds is two (nearly 3) and loves it. There are lots of fiddly parts and I trust him not to eat them but they do tend to get lost etc. So I have them stored away in tubberware until they are older

Equimum · 26/09/2017 22:01

I would say it depends on your child and which set you are getting. DS1 turned four last christmastime and received lots of Playmobil. He is the type of child who takes things apart, so everything is always in pieces; vehicles missing wheels, doors etc.

That said, the vehicles we have are generally quite good, but we've found. You have to be incredibly careful with the bigger buildings, as they tend to fall apart quite easily (e.g. The fire engine) even when handled gently.

PurplePillowCase · 26/09/2017 22:01

the boats are pretty cool, they are good for in the bath too.

wobblywonderwoman · 26/09/2017 22:04

We have the elc castle ordered so I got them playmobil knights and a troll. I mixed these in with some papo horses etc

I have a wooden dolls house (not girly at all) and they love the toilet ( ;) )

Some of the pirates

I love the fact they have children in wheelchairs, double prams and all the detail

We havent any major 'set' as such yet

AndWhat · 26/09/2017 22:06

My DS loves the stuff, just be aware every police set has guns with them. We discreetly remove them, there has also been a few small pieces which we've taken away as well.
We also get my DS a playmobil advent calendar (although not usually Christmas theme)

NoWordForFluffy · 26/09/2017 22:10

We binned the gun too, AndWhat!

DS loves Playmobil and has done since he was about 2.8. We've got him and DD more for Christmas when they'll be 3.5 and 4.6 respectively.

PebblesFlintstone · 26/09/2017 22:10

It depends on your child. I bought the 4+ when DD1 was just 4, and 1-2-3 for DD2. They are now 7 and 5 and still play with the 1-2-3 stuff much more because neither of them particularly like little fiddly pieces. They prefer the chunkier bits. I think this is the same reason the extremely expensive Sylvanian Families bits I bought hardly ever come out of the box. However, if you have a very careful child who likes detail, they will probably get on well with the 4+.

ILoveCwtches · 26/09/2017 22:17

My DD has been playing with all my old playmobil to since she was about 3 (she's 4.5 now). She used to need help with the smaller bits and still does sometimes but practice has made her more able to sort them out herself.

She has a couple of newer sets (camping, dogs in a kennel, horses) but loves my old school, nursery, building site, bikes etc too.

I'm thrilled that she likes it all as it means I can play with it all again, too! Grin

wobblywonderwoman · 26/09/2017 22:32

I think I am going to buy the 123 Santa and reindeer set (for myself )

My three year old and seven year old love playmobil, it gets lots of use . The swimming pool is a definite favourite plus the camper can

64PooLane · 27/09/2017 21:58

It'll be great at that age. My top tip is to keep a "small tub" with a reliable lid for storage of the most annoying yet strangely charming tiniest bits. We use a little round Lock & Lock like this (it might be slightly smaller actually but this shape):

www.amazon.co.uk/Lock-Round-Storage-Container-1-6/dp/B00CE0CQ1A/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1506545415&sr=8-4&keywords=lock+%26+lock+container+round&tag=mumsnetforum-21

It's good because you can scoop all the bits in, shut it then chuck it into a toybox or wherever and it doesn't come open or spill, which matters bc the tiny Playmo stuff is SO TINY and there is a LOT of it, but you don't want to lose it because it is incredible.

I was so bowled over when I noticed the minuscule gold coins from the treasure chest had different denominations and ever so slightly different sizes and faces.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 28/09/2017 21:39

The zoo and petting farm type sets weren't as bad for teeny stuff when DS was that age, so they were quite good starter sets. Actually we still have a volcano and dinosaur stuff and that's not too bad. Avoid the pirate sets for now - everything is teeny!!

Believeitornot · 28/09/2017 21:40

My ds got playmobil from 3 and at nearly 8 he still plays with it!

We didn't remove the small bits because he didn't put stuff in his mouth then

Best things were the chunky vehicles.

Freezingwinter · 28/09/2017 21:55

I have just ordered the Playmobil pony farm for DS who will be aged 2.10 at christmas. Hoping it's ok, it looks fab!

GlitteryFluff · 29/09/2017 12:08

Thanks everyone. Gonna have a good look at the suggestions and see what I think he'll like most.

Come on folks.... Bet you're all playing with your kids playmobil tonight with your Wine or Gin

NeverNic · 30/09/2017 10:46

Freezing winter - my son is pretty much that age now and he loves his brother's sets. In fact I think he uses it more than the 5yo!!

NeverNic · 30/09/2017 10:50

Should say we also have the 123 Noah's ark. They love the chunky animals, but in terms of how much they are played with the 'big children' playmobil is more popular.

PurplePillowCase · 30/09/2017 12:45

Come on folks.... Bet you're all playing with your kids playmobil

damn, cover blown :o

CJCreggsGoldfish · 30/09/2017 12:48

We're getting some for DS's third birthday. We visit friends fairly frequently who have some, and it's the first thing he plays with. I think we're getting him the zoo...I'm eyeing up the pyramid for when he's older though.

NeverNic · 30/09/2017 13:07

Just bought the hospital in the ASDA toy rollback - £30, usually £50-60 everywhere else. Not even sure if the boys want it, but I've bought it anyway. Haha!!
