Stockings - just kids or adults too?

ScrunchyBook · 15/09/2017 16:35

Since I met my DH there have been no young children in the direct family, so we have always done stockings for PIL, SIL, DH etc, all adults.

It's been very nice, but I grew up in a family where Santa brought stockings for the kids only.

I said this to my DH and got called a Grinch because I suggested stopping adult stockings after this year as we now have kids.

I think it would be weird to grow up with Santa bringing stockings for kids, parents and grandparents?
Or is it not weird? AIBU??
Tell me what you do in your family please!

In our house growing up only kids got stockings. When my mum met my step-dad he brought her a stocking & it's something they've continued - the two of them exchange little, often funny, stocking gifts with each other in bed before they come down & put a shit tonne of effort into everyone else's day. It's a very sweet tradition. As adults my mum still gives us small stocking fillers (our DPs too). Kids get the real fuss tho

missyB1 · 15/09/2017 17:11

No not in our house - it would just be more "stuff" to have to buy, I sound like the grinch now! Grin
In fact we only started doing stockings for ds when he was about 5 as he heard other kids had them, before that all his presents were under the tree.

pieceofpurplesky · 15/09/2017 17:29

We don't do big gifts but all have a stocking ( adults)

Snausage · 15/09/2017 17:35

Christmas is always (for the time being) at my mum's. She does a stocking for DB, DP, DS and I. I do one for her, DP and contribute to DS's. We all get kn without fail! I know that if when we finally have Christmas at DPs mum's place which I dread mum will pack us off with our stockings to open on Christmas morning.

Chrisinthemorning · 15/09/2017 20:14

I do DH a stocking and DH does me one. It's fun! Smile

Haudyerwheesht · 15/09/2017 20:24

Santa only brings stockings to the kids. Adults still get a stocking though - dh does mine, I do his and I do my mums.

yorkshireyummymummy · 15/09/2017 20:29

I do my DH and DD one each. But nobody does me one🙁 . AIBU if I semi hijack this thread to ask pp - what the hell do you put in men's stockings?? I struggle every year to find more than shit loads of chocolate to put in it.

chanie44 · 15/09/2017 21:09

I've had a stocking since I was a child and when me and OH moved in together, we stayed doing stockings instead of a big gift.

Bottle of beer/spirit miniatures
Mug
Keyring
Socks
Thermals -long johns
Chocolate
Pen/tablet pen
Mini torch
Pjs
Lottery scratch card

Yorkshire,

Some of things I've got DH over the years. Humorous book such as the Ladybird Husband how it works or No Such thing as Fish facts. Hotel Chocolat chocolates, posh type snacks nuts/biltong etc. Trappist Beer from BeerHawk with matching goblet style glass. Depending on what his current hobbie is accessories to go with that. Currently its Golf, so last year it was thin thermal golf gloves, balls & a thermal layer. Magazine again dependant on hobby. Obligatory socks & Dave Gandy pants from M&S, there might be tears if he didn't get those. iPhone cable, last year extra long nylon one, this year I'm thinking a light up one & ear pod type headphones. Miniature malt whiskey, one year I got whiskey stones as well.

I love doing stockings, I do them for everyone, DD, DH, MIL & both my Aunts. I'd do them for my cats if I thought they'd appreciate it 😏

elQuintoConyo · 15/09/2017 21:31

It is me, DH and DS only for Christmas. We all get a stocking.

DH and I get chocolates, a book, something phone-related (charger for the car or some such), something small like you'd get in Tiger (whoopee cushion, funky notebook, silly pen etc).

We all have HUGE stockings to fill - i made them while pregnant, just thought they looked pretty, didn't give a thought to actually filling them year in, year out HmmGrin

officerhinrika · 15/09/2017 21:40

Stockings are really the only essential part of Christmas presents. Don't care about other presents for me. It's a challenge these days to fill my young adult sons stockings and even more for 83 year old DF but it can and will be done!

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 15/09/2017 21:42

Everyone in our house gets. This year that's my parents, my inlaws, DH, DS and me.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/09/2017 07:45

Everyone in this house gets a stocking, regardless of age.

Doesn't have to be very expensive. For adult non family guests I've sometimes used just a pair of nice new stretchy socks, stuffed one inside the other and added a few little bits. Always a satsuma in the bottom!

BroomstickOfLove · 16/09/2017 09:30

Everyone gets one, and I've made one to post to my sister since we grew up.

DP is not a fan of gift tat, so his stocking will typically contain this has that are either useful or consumable:

Chocolate coins, orange, Santa and reindeer.
L'Occitane deodorant
Sock/pants/gloves if he needs some.
Fancy jar of marmite
Jar of cornichons
Salami
Copy of Private Eye
Series of toys that go in every year and get put away after Christmas until next year.
Soap

LadyTsunade · 16/09/2017 15:21

Everyone in my house gets a stocking regardless of age (dh and I are both 30). I'm pretty good at getting his, though mine is always a bit dubious 😑 may have to hint/instruct on what to put in mine this year

Carrie76 · 16/09/2017 15:23

DH did one for me last year and left it in our bed in the night. I loved it but my fear is the kids might start questioning Santa earlier. As in dad leaves mums so maybe he leaves ours.

Parker231 · 16/09/2017 15:26

Everyone in our house gets a stocking - children, adults and any visitors

EllieMentry · 16/09/2017 15:30

I think it's a great way to introduce the idea that family enables the stockings and the magic of Christmas.

It helps smooth the transition from believing in FC (if they do) to enjoying it as a way that the family celebrates a myth and tradition.

LadyTsunade · 16/09/2017 15:31

I told my kids Santa only brings gifts to kids and the adults buy for each other...So my dds know dh and I get each others and they're cool with it. they actually help me with ideas for my husbands'

crazypenguinlady · 16/09/2017 15:43

My mum has always done me a sticking and I'm 31 Grin

We're going to carry it on in my own family this year for our DS plus adult stockings for us. Me and DP have already agreed on one present plus stocking.

Foreverhopeful22 · 16/09/2017 15:50

Stockings for all

Daughter 2 gets toys

Me, perfume, toiletries etc
Husband , tools, phone case and socks

We will put one out for Santa - it has bottle of brandy in it!

Iliketurtles · 16/09/2017 15:51

Everyone gets a stocking and everyone buys for each stocking, it's always small fun gifts, no labels, so no one know who bought what, they are opened in the morning, with tree present opened after Christmas lunch.

I would be really upset if a family member suggested that as they now had children, the adults no longer "deserved" their stockings.

endehors · 16/09/2017 15:56

Just children, in my own experience anyway. Though I can't see I'd stop doing this for adult children...
