Stockings - just kids or adults too?

Since I met my DH there have been no young children in the direct family, so we have always done stockings for PIL, SIL, DH etc, all adults.

It's been very nice, but I grew up in a family where Santa brought stockings for the kids only.

I said this to my DH and got called a Grinch because I suggested stopping adult stockings after this year as we now have kids.

I think it would be weird to grow up with Santa bringing stockings for kids, parents and grandparents?
Or is it not weird? AIBU??
Tell me what you do in your family please!

We all get stockings and the youngest in the family is now 27!

Ideas for men:

Boxers and socks
Miniature bottle of something, e.g. whisky
Men's manicure kit
Biltong
Chilli sauce
Magazine associated with hobby
Book
DVD
Chocolate
Novelty office supplies, e.g. paperclips in the shape of fish
Toiletries, e.g. deodorant, shower gel
Seasonings for BBQ meat
Bottle opener
Something for the car, e.g. puncture repair kit, air freshener
Sachets of posh coffee/hot chocolate/tea.

I have never had a stocking. I had a pillow case as child. But my own children have always had one and now 3 of them are adult they still get one in the morning and then ' adult ' presents under the tree after lunch.
Even my married daughter still has her stocking !
Actually i feel quite sad that i dont get one now ! Might decide to do myself and dh one this year to redress the balance ,

We tarted doing stockings for family when we were still saving up to get married and each living with parents - it was a way to give everyone a small, extra present without favouring either my 'side' or his - this was way back when £25 would buy enough to stuff an old sock for each of 8 people. After we married, I made stockings for everyone, as well as a few extras to allow for the expanding wider family and we gave a stocking to everyone for about 6 years. When our dcs were born, we continued the stockings for grandparents from the dcs. We gradually wound down stockings for those outside our home and now just do them for our dcs, their partners and each other. As to what goes in -
Dcs = travel size toiletries, small book, chocolate or other sweets. Any small items suited to their work or hobbies - one DC uses a lot of those narrow post it notes to bookmark sections relevant for work, so often get some of those for him.
Dh - diary, gel pens, humorous books, sweets, pocket sized trivia game etc

DILs - manicure sets with nail polish etc. Earrings, mini bottle of prosecco, toiletries, hobby or interest related items.

Mine (from dh) diary, toiletries, good chocolate, perfume, small make up items eg mascara, small bottle of whisky or red wine, one year I got a beautiful set of cheese knives and later that day my main pressie was a wonderful cheese hamper with oatcakes and chutneys to accompany the gorgeous cheeses.

There's so much that can go in - the only thing that limits us is cost as we are clear that stockings are extras, not main gifts.

In my family stockings were always ten things for ten pounds, put together by my mum. I used to be so baffled by my friends who got CDs and clothes in their stockings! Last Christmas was the first that DP and I spent together and not with family, so I wanted to continue the tradition. In the end we didn't do x things for x pounds but set an overall budget, and both of us got lots of little things for each other within that budget. My mum still does one for my dad, brothers and both grandpas (grandmas are dead) and my dad does one for my mum. I think it's a lovely tradition, and x things for x pounds means it's quite silly and small compared to actual gifts. It's a nice opener to Christmas Day and it's fun to find lots of things that fit the budget and watch them be opened. We'll deffo be doing them for each other and children in the future.

Loads of adults still getting stockings it seems, my DH will be pleased.
They will continue then!

never too old for stockings 😂

DelurkingAJ · 16/09/2017 20:18

Everyone gets a stocking. In fact, we all get two as my DM refuses to give up doing stockings and has just added DH and DSs to her list!

I tend towards useful or consumable for DH (often nicer versions of stuff he uses) and everyone gets Xmas socks (DSs get Xmas pants too as they're little). I buy all year for them when I spot stuff (so far am particularly pleased with a Lego cookie cutter for DS1 and a book (charity shop) for DH). Everyone gets a chocolate orange rather than a satsuma and there have to be chocolate coins. DS1 doesn't like chocolate (I sometimes wonder if he's mine) so I pick his chocolates to be ones for me to eat...

@Delurking, where did you get the lego cookie cutter from?
