Help with tasteful decorations

My DC are older and it's now time to rethink.
I have a lovely period house but no clue how to make it look festive.
We'll have a real tree with the same old decorations which I love but what else?
3 mantelpieces, lots of empty windowsills, an entry hall, all bare.
Any ideas?

Waitrose do some really nice garlands, which I think are tasteful, and pretty reasonable at £15.

Of course, this is based on my own taste, which for all I know could be hideously tacky to everyone else

My personal taste is thick white candles with greenery from the garden and maybe the odd red berry/rosehip/whatever to add some colour.
But I'm maybe not a very Christmassy person

Thanks. I can do church candles, do you group them together and what do they go on?
Sorry, I'm clueless.
Love the wreath idea, I think our garden centre will have one.
