Bread sauce - yay or nay?

So I've never made, or indeed eaten bread sauce, but wondering whether to give it a try this year - I don't eat turkey, or much dairy really so can't see the appeal of thickened milk. However I do like to please my guests.

So, tell me wise ones, is bread sauce a deal breaker for you?

I watched a friend make it once. Onion poked with cloves, bunged in warming milk for what looked like hours. Then bread mushed into the milk. The whole thing looked hell in a jug.

I only took a little bit to be polite.

It was bloody lovely.

Never had it since. Not sure my hob can do the low temp required for all the onion sitting in warmish milk bit. She had an aga which does... magic and mysterious way of cooking.

It's bloody lovely and the best thing about a poultry roast

Yay! My DH's family never used to eat it until the first year I spent Christmas with them. DH told his mum I considered it an absolute must have so she made some especially for me and now the whole family is hooked!

JustCallMeKate · 25/11/2016 23:26

Definitely not, it reminds me of vomit.

Allalonenow · 25/11/2016 23:29

I make mine quite spicey with nutmeg, allspice and cloves, and stir in a bit of cream at the end, it's wonderful stuff.

Kidnapped · 25/11/2016 23:32

Oh now come on, JustCallMeKate.

That really isn't fair to vomit.

Mrswinkler · 25/11/2016 23:36

No. just no.

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 26/11/2016 00:11

Yes! I like a blob with my dinner but only really make it for the lovely Christmas leftovers sandwiches, it's the glue.

JustCallMeKate · 26/11/2016 07:39

Kid mixing onions with milk and soggy bread is enough to make anyone vom Grin I mean, even in the pic you posted it looks like something regurgitated. Who would want a jog/dish of vomit like substance on their table 😳 Ewwwww.

Trinpy · 26/11/2016 08:14

I'll be making it for the first time this year. My Dh does all the Christmas cooking normally but I don't trust him to make bread sauce right. My dm does the Delia one and it's amazing.

I suspect the baby and I will be the only ones willing to eat it though Sad.

I like it homemade. Packet breadsauce is just Wrong.

Mum never studded an onion with cloves, but chopped the onion and added the cloves separately. Then you have to fish out all the cloves before serving, and there's always one which goes missing...

Wolpertinger · 26/11/2016 10:00

Yay but only if it's Delia's. That is divine.

All other types are vile.

goose1964 · 26/11/2016 19:20

Its a yay from me too, but not too thin

Ohtobeskiing · 26/11/2016 19:22

No, never. Bleuch - horrible, horrible, horrible.

NiceCuppaTeaAndASitDown · 26/11/2016 19:23

Yes, yes, yes!! It's an absolute must.

CalypsoValdez · 26/11/2016 20:07

No no no no no no no.

MrsDilligaf · 26/11/2016 20:41
