Why do people buy the latest toys and sell them in for more, other than to make other people's lives a misery on the run up to Christmas

Several friends are struggling to find Hatchimals, a few today can't get a Nintendo minis.

Luckily I preordered mine, one yet to arrive, doesn't mean I'm not sitting on edge until it gets here.

Wish EBay would enforce a rule in November and December that the top 10 toys can only be sold for the market value, rather than for silly amounts.

I hope Karma catches up with them one day!

It is a cheek. I certainly wouldn't do it. Didn't people do this with those Anya Hindmarsh bags from Sainsbury's which they bought for a fiver and then sold for £££ on eBay? It's not in the spirit of Christmas at all.

It's really annoying... my DD really wants a hatchimal and doesn't get that Santa may not be able to find one in time for Christmas :(

We're going to Orlando next week and I'm hoping to find one there, but if not I'm going to have to pay stupid amounts of money on eBay because it's literally all she has asked for. But I begrudge doing it!! Hate the people that do it... some are on there for £250

I think it's morally shit but things are always worth what people are willing to pay for them. And if people are willing to pay over the odds, there's money to be made.

But the market value is just what the market will support - which is what people are prepared to pay.

Do you want them to price - fix?

Things haven't changed my dad recently told us about a panic ridden Xmas eve 30 yrs ago when he couldn't locate a octamus prime for my sister....
As a last ditch attempt he rumbled up to a toys r us and said he had one on reserve....and they said of course Mr smith I will just get it for you.. ( he is not Mr smith).
Parents will do what they can to get their kids what they want....
Ds list this year includes something nice for mummy :). Santa's going to think long and hard about that one ;)

After Christmas there will be no shortage of them I'm sure. Luckily for me, my children have never asked for anything that sells out quickly. Dd3 who is 7 wanted a 3ds xl and the new baby Annabell. My older girls are teenagers so past that stage.

Someone I know is able to get them in Ireland, and travels there weekly, but charging £20 collection fee for each one bought.

Good luck to them I say. If people are willing to pay over the odds because they're a sheep then that's their lookout.

This is so true. I tried to get my son the Nintendo classic mini today. Sold out everywhere but on eBay for triple the price. So pissed off.

Sunshine - they do sell them but they're out of stock in both places :(

Gizmo - this is just not my Christmas! I'm looking for one of those too for my DH... between that and the hatchimal and some sausage game my other DD wants I'm going to have an anxiety attack :p

People aren't paying that much because they're silly to pay it, they're paying it because they're desperate and don't want to disappoint their child.

A friend managed to get a hatchimal a few days ago from Smyths and when she was leaving, someone stopped her and offered her £100 cash right there for it. She didn't take them up on their offer.

How old are you dcs? I usually tell mine that they'll get some things on their list but not everything. That covers me if there's stuff which isn't available.
If they don't get something, they can save up for it or wait. Or never get it.

My ds once said to me that he didn't get enough presents. He'd been watching those bloody YouTube videos with mountains of stuff. Madness.

I'm thinking the same. I'm hoping and praying toys r us or argos get another lot in before Christmas. I've just seen one on eBay for £500 I mean WTAF!! Pulling my hair out.

Believeitornot - we stupidly started a tradition of them asking Santa for one thing... rather than making a list... and so far have always managed to get that one thing. It's almost like Christmas and my daughters entire belief system rests on this hatchimal!

I used to work in Toys R Us in my teens. It's crazy the lengths people will go to getting the latest craze for christmas. I remember people queuing up at 3am in the freezing cold for teletubby soft toys.

Having said that I confess to spending a crazy amount to import Frank the Combine Harvester from Cars movie. (Disclaimer DS has SN and it was the only thing he'd been asking for all year)

monkey i too worked in toys r us and have dealt with some odd and borderline psychotic behaviour from parents desperate for 'that toy'

my mini nes arrived today so am pleased about that. my kids don't ask for anything really in particular. i think it's cos they never watch tv with adverts! they dunno what they want!

The really special customers though were the ones returning faulty items the day after boxing day. Now THEY were scarey

I was getting the nes as a surprise,he actually wants the Nintendo 3ds xl. However I'm pissed off I couldn't get one. I didn't even know they could be pre ordered... never mind. These things happen. He can always get one with Christmas money afterwards. It's just annoying when you look at what they're getting sold for on eBay.

But but but...hatchimals are rubbish! Read the reviews on Amazon. Save yourself the stress over something that will only entertain for a couple of hours and get something else they've asked for.
