Christmas

Just a small moan about people buying and selling popular toys

Why do people buy the latest toys and sell them in for more, other than to make other people's lives a misery on the run up to Christmas

Several friends are struggling to find Hatchimals, a few today can't get a Nintendo minis.

Luckily I preordered mine, one yet to arrive, doesn't mean I'm not sitting on edge until it gets here.

Wish EBay would enforce a rule in November and December that the top 10 toys can only be sold for the market value, rather than for silly amounts.

DS2 wanted a hatchimal, but with som pursuation he now wants a Furby as they do so much more than the hatchimal. Hatchimals look very cheaply made, the only exciting thing is the hatching out the egg.

Finally managed to get a hatchimal during the week.

Tesco are sometimes restocking them at 4am in the morning! Also Very are doing restocks too, so worth checking. There are sites you can sign up to for email notifications but obviously you need to be really quick.

I preordered mine in August, meant to be getting delivered tomorrow, although not dispatched. I had better get it!

I have seen on here, other websites and my friend also said, they have watched a video of hatchimals on YouTube and the kids were underwhelmed and changed their minds, some have said just that and others have said they mentioned how many other toys could be bought instead of one very expensive one

Worth a shot if you are struggling to get one

It is very wrong like last year with the mog teddies and the year before with elsa dresses - £10 asda ones were being sold bidding for £200 on ebay. Crazy money!

Last year I did sell a paw patrol robo dog figure for £20 on ebay when I paid £6.99 - it funded importing rocky and Zuma I couldn't get in the uk from america!! Felt guilty at the time but I listed low and it went that high, my argos was full of everest and robo dog who seemed to sell for loads on ebay....

To the ex toyshop workers - out of interest I've always wondered if staff in toy shops were/are always able to get the "in" toy every year? Could you order for friends & family? "pull a few strings?" Grin

No Butt, delivery now changed to December 😭😒😡

As long as I get it, it'll be fine, but I don't need the stress!

Are you kidding? Are you actually suggesting people shouldn't be able to buy and sell? It's the oldest trade going. They're taking advantage of people being so desperate to consume that they can't control themselves - why shouldn't they make some money from it?

I think you've got a bit carried away

Matching- why on earth should people be allowed to do this. Shops are obviously aware as I've noticed they are doing 1 per customer. Are u saying that it's acceptable for people to make money out of people who's children would like these toys however can't afford to pay extortionate prices for the Christmas presents for their children because they are sold out due to scammers buying the stock to make money?? How ridiculous.

Anyone seen a Nintendo classic mini in store?

I doubt any person is doing it to 'make a misery of your christmas'.

They will be doing it to earn extra money for themselves/family, though it isn't something I would do.

But imagine this...
If parent's didn't spend out the extra when they go on sale, then the people buying them wouldn't make a profit and would stop.
So who is the problem? The people selling them on or the people buying them? I know which one I think.

(oh and let's not talk about the spirit of christmas, which is about God and Jesus and not presents, at a time when most of us are spending hundreds of pounds every christmas).

monkey I too biught the frank for more than market value. Although only £20 as it was a couple years after film came out.
I have also just bought over the odds for an indominus rex lego figure. Luckily he just wants the figure, which I got for £17 and not the whole set which is £150 on ebay when it retailed for £50 originally. It's an old film now so can't get it anywhere else.

Teacher- your post is ridiculous. Obviously people who's children want these are fine to purchase, however people buy things just to make money. Then they are out of stock because of these dickheads. If people would stop trying to make money out of parents then it wouldn't be a problem would it? I think your missing the point.

Shops buy things at a price they want and sell things for the max they can get for them.
The people you complain about buy things at a price they want and sell things for the max they can get for them.

There is actually no difference. By the time a product gets to a shop it may have been bought and sold several times and always at least once.

Teacher- your post is ridiculous.

Of course, always is when someone disagrees with you on mumsnet. How dare I have an opinion, eh.

Obviously people who's children want these are fine to purchase, however people buy things just to make money.

That is exactly what shops are.

Then they are out of stock because of these dickheads. If people would stop trying to make money out of parents then it wouldn't be a problem would it? I think your missing the point.

I don't think I am. I think you are missing the point.

IF people didn't buy the things being sold at extortianate prices, then people would stop selling them and they would all be in stock and you could buy them at normal prices.
It would only take one year of it happening and it would fix the problem.
But that won't happen because the people buying them at high prices are greedy and just want what they want regardless. They are just as bad as the people selling them. If not worse, because by buying them and keeping demand high, it stops people like me from getting the toys because people like you keep buying high.

It is supply and demand, and the people buying at high prices are the ones fueling it.

As TeacherBob says, this is very simple economics, the basis of capitalism. Don't forget there is a risk to the traders; if Hatchimals didn't take off they might be left with lots of unsellable toys. They might also have bought a lot of some other toy that you've never heard of which they now can't get rid of.

The only fools here are the "desperate" parents who frankly deserve to be ripped off.

GizmoFrisby · 12/11/2016 09:06

Is it greed or are you just trying to get your children what they want for Christmas. Some of these comments are totally unhelpful to those trying to get certain toys. People with children tend to want to fulfil their children's wishes at Christmas. Hmm

As a last ditch attempt he rumbled up to a toys r us and said he had one on reserve....and they said of course Mr smith I will just get it for you.. ( he is not Mr smith). I wonder how Mr Smith felt when he couldn't give his child an optimus prime that he took the time to order, and reserve. What an underhand thing to do!

If you choose to spend your money on such a shite toy that's your own lookout. Look at the hatchanimal. Its utter, utter crap. The people desperate to buy them, ie you, are compounding the problem. Add to that the supply chain just trickling the product into the shops to artificially create a shortage and voila. People going crazy over one of the shittest toys I've ever seen.

Some companies stopped letting you pre order. So what do u do then?? Oh yes go and pay £200 for an eBay one? Ridiculous. Hmm
