Poncetastic 2016

Ok this thread may commence from midnight in honour of Fellatio. I sadly abandoned last years mid run due to pre-eclampsia and early birth of my December baby and therefore fully intend to throw myself fully into this years festivities:

"OK, first of all, I know it's still September by we need to start this thread now because as you all know, having a truly Poncetastic Christmas involves precision planning, strategy, bravery, heroics, and frequently martyrdom. A bit like the war in Afghanistan, only with nicer food and sparkly shoes.

So, if you, like me, actually want to make the next twelve weeks of your life a misery by hand-crafting your cards, finding a huge bucket for Nigella's turkey in brine, pickling pears, shrivelling oranges in a low oven for those rustic au naturel decorations, dragging half a holly bush back from the woods, and just generally being a smug annoying jobsworth ponce, join me on this thread.

Feel free to post photos of previous tree-trimming, cake icing or table centrepiece triumphs, discuss this year's bauble colour themes, debate the merits of Delia versus Gordon, road-test a selection of canapes and cocktails, (all in the line of duty) and link to lovely inspirational photos/craft ideas for a truly Poncetastic Christmas.

Warning: If your idea of a good Christmas involves Pizza, ITV, gravy granules or anything with 'Aunt Bessies' on the packet, this is not the thread for you".

Let's surpass all poncestastic pasts please

I bought a 1.5 litre bottle of sainsbury London gin last year and used that. Smells like quite a reasonable gin. I don't drink gin and tonic so I'm not au fait.

theanamumdiary.co.uk/2012/11/23/gingerbread-syrup-for-coffee-homemade-christmas-gifts/ This is my syrup recipe!

This is an alternative better herb jelly recipe, can be adapted to any herbs, needs the vinegar or it is too sweet and weird tasting!

DP has just agreed to a second tree on the landing so I must find some more warm white lights to achieve the glow. What are the feelings about tinsel on this thread?

Mummyshortlegz · 28/09/2016 14:38

I tend to use tinsel and place lights over it to get a good sparkle and twinkle. I'm not against it.

Love this thread every year and have always been a ponce christmasser in my head, but actually want to give it a go this year!
Any good ideas for rosehips? Lots going here at the moment.
Last year I had my own flat to decorate for the first time and no decorations and little money, so made paperchains from ripped up magazines.
I've made christmas cards in the past: folded card with snowflakes on the front and folded cream card sewn in to it. They turned out very well, if I do say so myself. But need a fresh idea this year.
Love the idea of blackberry and apple gin!

charlybs · 28/09/2016 19:48

Oh my god! I've found my true reason for being on mumsnet!!

Last year I made a wreath (various Christmassy materials) and decopaged and painted a Christmas tree shaped advent calendar.

This festive season I am getting more and more pregnant... so am eagerly looking at this thread for things I can make. I think I'll make baby's first stocking as I assume I'll be knackered this time next year!

For people who can't go to wreath-making workshops, Mumsnet has made its very own video on how to make a simple and virtually free wreath.

Sophia1984 · 29/09/2016 01:31

Love a bit of craft and am on maternity leave so will hopefully have some time to indulge Hmm Am planning to decorate a wooden advent calendar and make a felted stocking from a woollen jumper for DS, who will be 5 months. Got to start the Christmas traditions Smile

Anyone know how to hang a wreath on a UPVC door? Landlord replaced ours in the summer and I don't think I can hammer a nail into plastic!

PinkSquash · 29/09/2016 08:42

Hairspray Lakeland do some plastic sucker hooks which work really well, lasted through the high winds and heavy seaside rain last year. You can easily Ponce them up if you need to with ribbon and such

Mummyshortlegz · 29/09/2016 08:42

70isaLimitNotaTarget Step away from aunt bessie's! DS must learn

So far most of my pouncing this year has been outsourced. MUST TRY HARDER.

Can anyone share their pinterest boards please? If I see one more tinsel filled monstrosity I may not cope

What poncetastic puddings are people planning for the day itself? DH will not tolerate Christmas pud or cake and therefore an alternative must be presented. Under no circumstances is this to be shop bought. I am thinking perhaps a Yule Log?

OP posts:
JasperDamerel · 29/09/2016 09:44

I'm a big Yule log fan, but I cheat and just cut up two M&S chocolate Swiss rolls and cover them with ganache.

Nobody ever really wants a proper pudding after Christmas dinner.

Having said that, I do sort of spread the courses out over the day, so we have canapés at noon, the main meal at around three and cheese in the evening, so the evening could become pudding and cheese quite easily.

CatsAreTwats · 29/09/2016 10:52

Hi all, I'm so happy to see that this thread is back, it's my happy place :) I think I was the OP last year or the year before, but as I made so much stuff last year, I've pretty much got nothing left to make, and have no inspiration!

The only thing I'm planning on making this year so far is a wreath.

Waitingforegg, here's my Pinterest board

Looking forward to getting more inspiration :)

CatsAreTwats · 29/09/2016 10:53

(I had a different username last year!)

Mummyshortlegz · 29/09/2016 13:49

I haven't got a Pinterest board. That'll be what I do tonight.

I make nigella's Yule log and one year made 10. I love them.

I made a panettone bread and butter pudding last year and will make that again.

www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/chocolate-recipes/bonkers-bread-butter-panettone-pudding-tart/

I'll make a small pudding for dh and the ds and I may do a treacle sponge for me on the day itself.
