I ADORE Christmas pud but the kids and DH can't stand it. What alternatives do you do? I need ideas!

just get a small one for yourself and make something for the family like a trifle or a apple crumble

TheWoollybacksWife · 22/09/2016 22:26

I've made this for the last few years. DH has even abandoned Christmas pudding for a slice Xmas Grin

This year I'm really excited as I've found that a local gelato shop sell take-away tubs of their most popular flavours and I've ordered a litre of Ferrero Rocher flavour. The DC may get a small bowlful to share

Christmas pudding icecream?

OR

Bombe Alaska (possibly made with Christmas pudding icecream) for the whole setting the thing on fire bit.

TelephoneTree · 22/09/2016 22:29

Woollybacks Grin

A bomba alaska sounds divine. I might have that and Christmas pud.

Vienetta!

bonjournono · 22/09/2016 22:32

We had churros with chocolate sauce last year, randomly. It was lovely.

Titsywoo · 22/09/2016 22:36

I always have blackberry and apple crumble. Mainly because it's the only pudding I like but it lovely and comforting you earlier before sitting down to watch crap tv in the afternoon Grin

OverAndAbove · 22/09/2016 22:57

Sticky toffee pudding and custard. Yum!

MerylPeril · 22/09/2016 22:59

We always have trifle as we love it.

TelephoneTree · 23/09/2016 06:39

Oh god. I love all these. A lot.

We always have Christmas pudding ice cream from an old Australian women's weekly recipe.

A melting middle chocolate pudding. You could put sparklers in it to get the wow moment when you bring it into the room.

IsItGinTimeYet · 23/09/2016 09:10

Pannetone icecream pud is delicious and impressive. Jamie Oliver recipe if I recall.

Babymamamama · 23/09/2016 09:11

Last year I found some nice alternatives more like chocolate puddings but in the shape of a Christmas pudding. Without all the grim dried fruit etc. Went down very well with cream.

OhNoNotMyBaby · 23/09/2016 09:12

Trifle - it always used to be the law in my house (as a child). I love it still but my children don't really know what it is!

Crystalline · 23/09/2016 09:16

Yule Log - there's a great (and pretty foolproof) recipe in Nigella's Christmas book. Can be made a few days in advance, which is handy. We usually have a yule log and a shop bought christmas pudding.

ayeokthen · 23/09/2016 09:16

We do Yule Log, some kind of massive gateau, cheesecake and a small Christmas pud. We do have stupid numbers of guests though, so a wide range of food is expected (but never contributed towards!!!)

GlowWine · 23/09/2016 09:26

I make Nigellas Irish Cream tiramisu:
www.nigella.com/recipes/irish-cream-tiramisu

Super easy, super tasty, half a recipe fits perfectly into a 2lb loaf tin, and is more than plenty for us 6

AnneLovesGilbert · 23/09/2016 09:27

Chocolate roulade or semi freddo, you can make and freeze both way ahead which saves a job!

Some gorgeous ideas on here though, I might have to widen my options this year!

NameChange30 · 23/09/2016 09:28

Chocolate Yule Log. OBVIOUSLY. There is nothing else.

(I can't believe I'm posting on a Christmas thread in September, but I feel that strongly about Yule log!)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/09/2016 11:49

I only do Christmas Pudding if we have guests because it doesn't get eaten if its just us. (Though I have this years pudding already fermenting, I made two last year)

We have trifle on Christmas Eve , ice cream for the DC and apple pie for anyone who doesn't like either.

I made a syrup steamed pudding one year, it cooked while we had dinner, we don't eat the pudding straight away.

Barbeasty · 23/09/2016 12:04

We have a pudding which is essentially very rich chocolate biscuits sandwiched with a chocolate, coffee and brandy cream. It's been a family tradition since before I was born.

The last few years I've also made a Mary Berry recipe which is basically a bakewell tart but with mincemeat instead of jam.

Thumbcat · 23/09/2016 13:04

I'm planning to make Christmassy ice cream sundaes with pieces of mince pie, maybe some sort of spiced orange syrup and topped of with thick cream and some pieces of chocolate orange.

MissusDave · 23/09/2016 14:52

Yule log is usually the way to go, but if you're a bit bored of it and still fancy chocolate, I think this recipe for Terry's chocolate orange cake looks kind of amazing, and is still a valid Christmas idea because it's chocolate orange!
