I ADORE Christmas pud but the kids and DH can't stand it. What alternatives do you do? I need ideas!

A few years ago we realised DH and I are both gluten intolerant, so I tried Nigella's gluten free chocolate brownies. This is now my Christmas pudding. The recipe is on her website.

Last few years I've made christmas themed cheese cakes which have gone down well. Last year was terry 's chocolate orange, the year before Baileys.

I make christmas pudding vodka so I'm still getting my fix of pud.

Flanderspigeonmurderer · 23/09/2016 20:11

The ice cream sundae sounds amazing! Nigel Slater has a mincemeat cheesecake recipe that I really want to try this year.

Ginmakesitallok · 23/09/2016 20:18

Last couple of years I've bought one of these - served with vanilla cream and berries - delicious

I used to make trifle but bought a Sicilian Lemon and Marscapone Cheesecake from M & S last year, was absolutely lush.

BaggyCheeks · 24/09/2016 09:58

Gin That looks AMAZING!

The past couple of years I've made a chocolate cake - www.lakeland.co.uk/r80566/Mary-Berry's-Very-Best-Chocolate-Cake Ignore the photo, put the mixture into one deep cake tin and not two sandwich tins, and with the ganache, don't whip it up just pour it over the top of the cake once it's cooled so it sets nice and shiny. I sprinkle some edible gold dust stuff over the top to make it Christmassy Grin Delicious with double cream or ice cream.

Leggytadpole · 24/09/2016 13:54

Cheesecake or profiteroles.

SpringerS · 24/09/2016 16:00

We had churros with chocolate sauce last year

Were the churros home made? I have this mental image of you all deciding that the best way to round off a giant roast dinner was to whip out the deep fat frier and make churros.

It does actually sound lovely though!

bonjournono · 24/09/2016 19:49

Haha, no, they were a pack from M&S. They were very nice though!

KitKat1985 · 24/09/2016 20:53

I'm also in the Yule log camp if you want to keep it traditional. Failing that a Baileys cheesecake. Mmmm.

GoulashSoup · 24/09/2016 20:57

Another vote for sticky toffee.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/09/2016 21:04

Nigella Olive Oil cake is good, lighter than a Brownie (and dairy free )
I put in some plain chocolate chunks.

mathanxiety · 24/09/2016 22:08

I make tiramisu with a cooked custard filling plus shipped cream, pumpkin pie, a yule log and various German and Austrian cookies.

This year instead of the Yule log I may make Gerbaud Slice/Zserbo Szelet, a Hungarian desert that I found on Pinterest and made a few months ago. I made a ganache for the top with bittersweet chocolate. I felt it would be easier to slice through than plain melted and cooled choc.

I will make it a week in advance as it improves with age.

I will probably make this at some point over Christmas too. I use three eggs, grated orange peel, some dark choc chips and frozen cherries with the other ingredients. We have licked our plates after this before, after there were some Hmm expressions when I said 'Bread Pudding'.

Chillywhippet · 24/09/2016 23:33

Might try this

For some reason I'm fixated on what to have instead of Christmas Pud...
JulesJules · 24/09/2016 23:56

I absolutely love Christmas pudding flavour cheesecake.

We usually have a Christmas pud which no-one has room for after Xmas dinner, with an alternative chocolate torte or tarte citron (bought).

And a 70s classic which Mum always used to make for dinner parties. As kids we called it Maryland Cookie Delight and the name stuck -
dip maryland cookies (small choc chip cookies, biscuit type, not the huge soft cookies) into a saucer of sherry and then stack up in rows eg 2x8 cookies sandwiched with layers of whipped double cream. Cover with more whipped cream and decorate with crumbled flakes. Leave in fridge for at least 24 hours. Serve in slices. Delish.

I like to serve at least 3 pudding options. What isn't eaten for the meal can be eaten later.
I love christmas pudding, but I'm the only one. I usually make home made chocolate mousse in individual glasses, I make on christmas eve, then serve with a swirl of cream and real gold leaf before serving ( it's edible).
There are so many lovely shop bought deserts too, so I will buy a couple of those and store in the freezer. OH does not like sweet stuff so he will have stilton with crackers and and a large glass of port for pudding.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/09/2016 08:37

Another vote for Nigella's Irish Cream Tirimisu - stunning.

If we have guests I will do Limoncello pavlova or trifle too.

SpringerS · 25/09/2016 09:35

Haha, no, they were a pack from M&S. They were very nice though!

Cool. I might make sure to have some in for our polar breakfast on Christmas eve. I think they's be perfect and much more exciting for DS than plain old pastries. Smile

TheWoollybacksWife · 25/09/2016 09:55

Tesco also have churros in the freezer section filled with chocolate hazelnut sauce with glitter sugar to sprinkle over. I bought them last year as a sweet thing to serve at a buffet and they were very nice.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/09/2016 10:28

I got churros from Lidl during the Spanish food specials week. Haven't got round to eating them yet and they're languishing in the bottom of the freezer.

I do have real thick Spanish hot chocolate to eat them with when I do have them.

Churros con chocolate is a breakfast dish not a pudding in Spain, but I find that the carb/sugar hit sends me straight back to sleep.

Needfinsnow · 25/09/2016 10:34

My mum always made individual chocolate sponges, with melted chocolate sauce stuff in the middle..yummy! Oh and we had chocolate trifle too! :-)

Whitecovers · 25/09/2016 10:53

I've made this winter berry trifle the past couple of years www.homesandproperty.co.uk/home-garden/food/winter-berry-trifle-32007.html

But I might attempt a Yule log this year, are they difficult??

randomer · 25/09/2016 11:27

so 3 months before we are worrying about a pudding?

user1474781546 · 25/09/2016 11:44

randomer I don't think anyone's worried, it's fun to plan ahead and fantasise about things in the future.

1stMrsF · 25/09/2016 11:49

Chocolate sponge pudding and Chrismas pudding both on offer at our house - the chocolate goes brilliantly with brandy cream. I am just starting to think about Christmas myself. The planning is half the fun surely!
