Baby's first Xmas

What did everyone get for baby's first Xmas?

He'll be 10mo and I don't want to go overboard. Are a few big things/toys and some practical things (clothes, coat etc) okay? I know he'll not really get what's going on and will just love ripping the wrapping paper up but equally don't want to be stingy by only buying him a few toys, friends seem to have bought hoards for their kids! Help!

Board books, and a wooden push along trolley thing with wooden blocks could be good at that age.

The baby won't have a clue what's going on though so why not give it a kiss and some turkey to chew and put the money in an isa. (Joyless mum here)

Dd was about that age for her first Christmas. We got her a shape sorter, a teddy, some books and clothes. Really don't need to go overboard when they're that little. We also have a large family so she ended up with loads of stuff that I then had to find room for.

DC was seven months so we just wrapped up some clothes we were going to get anyway and a few board books. As you say, the wrapping paper is the best bit anyway!

I'm guessing she will be 1 in February? Get some toys suitable for 18 math onwards and store them for when she is old enough in the Summer.

Dd was 11 months, we got her a doll and a pram. Her stocking had some small toys and a lot of stuff we would have bought anyway - hair clips, bubble bath etc.

We bought her birthday presents in the summer when she was 18 months!

Yes Blue, he's one in feb another reason why I don't want to go overboard. Getting 18m+ is a good idea!! I'll wrap those up and put them away after.

DS was 8 months and he got one toy from us, as well as a few clothes. Lots from everyone else as you'd expect.

DS was almost the same age with a birthday in March, he had so much from friends & family that I moved some of our presents to his birthday & even this Christmas as he was having so much & more interested in the boxes & paper.

DH and I have had a similar conversation, dd will be one in early January. Grandparents and friends have already told us what they've bought (yes already!). We go on holiday in February (New York) so we've said we'll but her something while we're on holiday. I may steal the idea of buying 'older' presents for her to have over the year though.

Dd2 is going to be nearly 1 at Christmas and to be honest I'm only really getting her stuff for her big sisters benefit. She would think it very strange if santa forgot the baby.

I think I was a lot more concerned about what to get dd1 for her first Christmas and to be honest I can't even remember now what I bought in the end! I think I sat there like a knob with a baby who couldn't even unwrap presents looking at me like this . Good times!

DS was 4 months at Xmas. We got him a baby's first Xmas blanket. Some rubber farm yard animals. An aqua doodle (hardly got used!) and a vtech bus which is great for learning letters and numbers.

Oh and we wrapped up some clothes that we had brought anyway!

Ooh I forgot the one thing I've got dd2 already is a nice knitted personalised Stocking. Someone got dd1 one for her first Christmas so I thought I'd better get dd2 one so I dont have one child with the fancy swish Stocking and one with a pillowcase. It's actually really nice though and something they can use for a long time.

Any more than about 3 things will just be too much to play with. You are definitely on the right track.

Oi oooh a personalised stocking is a good idea too! Something he can reuse every year for each Christmas is a lovely thought

Does anyone do these Christmas Eve boxes? I've been looking at them but don't know if they're just gimmicky or if the kids really enjoy them (obviously won't be much use this year but for future years)

I've done a Christmas eve box for dd and i wish I'd never started it to be honest. She never seems that bothered by new Pyjamas and does not want to sit and watch a dvd on the most exciting night of the year. Ungrateful child

Get things for their age at Xmas plus 1 year.

Dc3 had a fleecy cosytoes for his pushchair/car seat, mostly because my 4yo t have questioned why father Christmas didn't bring him anything. Money from everyone else put away for a bigger purchase of garden equipment when he's bigger.

We gave clothes in the next size up, and toys that were a bit too old for him.

He also got the Happyland zoo, which we still haven't got out of the box yet!

Depending on your budget, this year I've bought him a soft photo book from Photobox, which wasn't cheap but has pictures of all his family printed onto textiles which is washable. He loves looking at photos and I'm so excited to give it to him and not have to worry about whether he rips it!

I did the Xmas eve box for DS but I did it on December 1st. I may move it to Xmas eve as he gets older.

Pretty sure I bought dd a (second hand) wooden Noah's Ark, with a shape-sorter aspect to it. She didn't play with it loads at the time, but did more in later years (and I actually still have it packed away in the cellar - it is such a nice toy.
I think I also got her some Waybuloo books and a Waybuloo DVD - rubbish parent that it probably makes me, I did used to stick certain tv shows on for her as a baby, and Waybuloo was the first one she loved. She got in to In the Night Garden a bit later.

I've just ordered one of those soft photo books. 30% off at the moment.

I bright my dd a stocking and filled it with little novelty bits like a soft Christmas ball, a stuffed santa, a pack of board books from the book people, some bubbles and some other silly bits. I also brought her a Christmas pudding jumper 😊
The grandparents went overboard and her birthday was in January so she really didn't need much.
