And for how many people?

OP posts:
JasperDamerel · 22/12/2015 09:13

Around £100 for two adults and 2 primary school aged children for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and possibly the day after. It doesn't include alcohol though, because I've been saving some nice wine that I got for my birthday. I made a spreadsheet Blush

Donge13 · 22/12/2015 09:17

I already have the booze, mixers and wine in the shed. I buy these through out the year and stash them. Like wise with chocolate and prawns and pickles.
I'm going to do the main food shop later and will buy everything else for Xmas dinner plus a months worth food so I only have to buy bread, milk and veg top ups in January. I think total cost over the year will work out at £750 . This is for 17 adults for Christmas Day, everything for January and enough booze to sink a ship! I have paid in the Christmas club at local butchers all year so will just have to collect my meat later, and I have bought and paid onto Asda Christmas saving cards, so I'm hoping I don't need to pay more than £100 cash today.

bigbadbarry · 22/12/2015 09:19

I'm not sure because it's come from various different places and I've made quite a lot in advance to freeze, but I guess about £350. 4 adults, 3 children. Apart from fresh bread and salary stuff, I won't shop again after today until maybe the 30th.

bigbadbarry · 22/12/2015 09:20

donge you've got months-old prawns in your shed?Xmas Wink

Florin · 22/12/2015 09:22

Probably about £400 in total between the ocado order, M&S the farm shop. Nothing will go to waste and food is something we are passionate about so we treat ourselves to nice quality food.
Had one Christmas with friends already total of 4 adults and 2 kids. Had a three bird roast from the local farm shop and all the trimmings, pudding and cheese and lots of wine and gin.
Christmas Day (3 adults one 3 year old who eats a lot) we are having smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast, lunch is the M&S baubles which are fish pate served in scallo shells, and lots of big prawns for our 3 year old as that is what he wants. Then 2 ribs of beef from the farm shop with all the trimmings, M&S chocolate log for pud and a cheese board in the evening. Lots and lots of wine!

kirinm · 22/12/2015 09:22

Over £250 for 4 adults but there is quite a lot of booze (accidentally drank some of the booze we originally bought). We've actually deliberately cut down our spending this year which now I write down the figure seems a bit Hmm

esiotrot2015 · 22/12/2015 09:24

I'd say £100 and we are going away Boxing Day and there's only four of us Xmas day fShock

BiddyPop · 22/12/2015 09:26

I spent about €75 on wine (2 bottles of nice white, a bottle of bubbles and half bottle of dessert wine) before our plans changed to not staying at home for Christmas. We'll enjoy it sometime.

I've spent about €45 on "Christmas nibbles and party food" - mostly either to make easy dinners, treat ourselves with nice crisps, and have things that DD will eat for school lunches (she loves the mini chick kievs that M&S do at this time of year!). Oh, and €8.46 on a piece of spiced beef which we had last night instead (with mashed potatoes, and Brussels sprouts from the garden so they cost €4.50 for the tray of plants last spring).

My input to 1 turkey dinner is veggies - I will spend about €20 on those for 14 people. And for the other is cheese, which was €28 including a chunk of stilton for our own fridge.

If I was still staying at home, it would be a turkey dinner for 3, which would be approx. €100-150 on the dinner, and a lot of party nibbles for the following day (open house for neighbours and relatives, for DD birthday).

Big in a freezer in the shed Grin

JasperDamerel · 22/12/2015 09:58

My £110 budget for 4 covers:

Christmas Eve:sausage rolls & fruit for lunch, soup, salad and garlic bread for dinner. Mulled wine. Mince pies.

Christmas Day:
Scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on rye bread toast. Fresh orange juice.

Smoked salmon on wheaten bread.
Blinis with sour cream and roe
Pate and cornichons on bagel croutons
Devils on horseback

Roast chicken
Pigs in blankets
Sausage, sage and onion stuffing
Roast potatoes
Sprouts with bacon and white wine
Carrot and swede mash
Roast parsnips
Gravy
Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce
Christmas pudding
Brandy butter
Lots of cheese

Soft drinks (nice lemonade, Badoit)

Boxing Day and after:
Leftovers plus salad and crudités, more cheese, charcuterie, hummus etc.

We already have wine and a Christmas cake.

mouldycheesefan · 22/12/2015 10:00

Chicken instead of Turkey does save a lot of money.
Jasper all power to you squeezing oranges on Xmas day!

carrie74 · 22/12/2015 10:04

About £260, including booze, but excluding the turkey and ham, which I'll get separately from the farm shop. It's coming tonight, and will largely feed us for at least a week. Having 4 adults and 2 kids from Xmas Eve to Boxing Day, then just the 4 of us the rest of the time (plus will be at other family for a couple of days, so there will be stuff popped in the freezer).

The turkey's great value - we had the last of it in September! Grin

wheelofapps · 22/12/2015 10:35

£121.
Inc 'normal' weekly shop - so, loo roll, bleach, toothpaste, shampoo, dog food, pasta, rice, bread, fruit etc

We are having 2 (reduced!) chickens from the Co-op in the freezer (there are 4 of us) which I shall put a lattice of streaky bacon on (as requested by 8 yr old dd who has been poreing (pouring?) over the M&S turkey brochure.
Plus, pigs in blankets, stuffing fancy sauces and gravy, 4 diff veg.
Christmas Cake, Pudding and Pies.

Lots of cold meats and salads for the Boxing Day Tea.
The Co-ops own Tiramisu and Profiteroles will do us nicely too.

I am very tempted by the M&S fish mousse bauble starters but I expect they were only 'to order' and I cant really justify £12 on them. Florin do you know?

I have some Cava in fridge and don't really drink anyway.

Dd has asked for a bottle of Appletise and ds for a 'very large Shepherds Pie' so they are easy to please, bless them.

We do have a family of 6 coming over but we always do a massive Fish Pie (in freezer, again, reduced) and good butchers sausages. I'll do a couple of puds from scratch so that'll only be around £25.

I reckon we have enough to last us around 10 days?

FoxInABox · 22/12/2015 10:51

£180 for the week- about £60 more than usual.

ifonly4 · 22/12/2015 11:04

I reckon I'll spend an extra £100, pretty good here at buying non perishables while on offer or at a good price early and being careful to buy what we really need. They'll be five of us Xmas Eve afternoon until Box Day am. Will see SIL Box Day teatime, haven't decided whether here or there but will still have enough. Anticipate we'll still have leftovers into next week.

NapoleonsNose · 22/12/2015 11:14

I've spent about £50 buying treaty bits week by week leading up to December. Went to Lidl this morning and bought the veg, free range turkey, cream and other fresh bits which was just over £70. Late Tesco dash on Xmas Eve for beer, wine, soft drinks and a few salady things which I am budgeting another £70 for. So all in for under £200. A few years ago, I'd spend double that but then I discovered Lidl! I'm hosting 7 of us on the day and we are going to the ILs on Boxing Day. That should do us for a good few days though I hope so anyway as skint now until NYE!

allthingsred · 22/12/2015 11:22

Around 100 so far. anticipating around another 100 this week there's 8 of us 5 adults 3 kids. I've been stressing do much cause I've usually started food shopping (dry goods alcohol etc ) in Oct so it's not so painful this month

We3KingyOfOblomovAre · 22/12/2015 11:37

Dh just spent £125 in Lidl. And £100 ins Sainsbury's, but with nectar points came out as zero £0.

Does anyone know if you can still get any Tesco or M&S Christmas food? Like a Beef Wellington? Or something posh for between Christmas and new Year?

DancingDuck · 22/12/2015 13:07

kingy how do you spend £125 in Lidl? I just bought the shop for under £20.

hooliodancer · 22/12/2015 15:05

I must overspend because I have spent about £450!

But that was including Prosecco to take to a party yesterday, hosting a dinner tomorrow, hosting Boxing Day, New Years Eve for 4 and all meals in between. Christmas day is just 2 if us though!

It doesn't include wine though as we make our own. This has really made me think I spend too much.

milkmilklemonade12 · 22/12/2015 15:16

£260 for all of us to have lunch out on Christmas Day (3 courses plus coffee and bottle of wine for the table; 3 adults 1 DC)

£150 at Cook for Boxing Day buffet and some pies/steaks for the freezer for 6

£150 at Costco on bulk wine and champagne

£100 in odds and ends for entertaining on top of the weekly food shop so like crisps, nuts, snacks, soft drinks and beers.

We will see around 20 people though in dribs and drabs between now and New Year and each will come expecting either a meal or some kind of grazing snack and some drinks.

Pinkdiva · 22/12/2015 15:36

£140 2 adults 3 children this includes our meats although I do have to go buy fresh veg and also a trifle tomorrow

CharlotteY1 · 22/12/2015 16:18

Apart from the turkey I've spent as follows-

£100 Tesco last week
£60 Asda
£20 Aldi
£35 Iceland
And then another 55 in Tesco today. This is for me, dh and our three children, plus some of the thing in that shop is to go towards s buffet we are putting on next Monday for my side of the family.

WiryElevator · 22/12/2015 16:24

Xmas party for 75 last weekend about £175

Xmas Day and Boxing Day for 5 adults, 2 children aged 12 & 9:
Nibbles at midday £15
Turkey £28
Ham £7
Other main course stuff about £25
Xmas pudding from last years work hamper
Other pudding, chocs, custard approx £15
Evening/Boxing Day bread, salads etc approx £25
Cheese £20
Booze Nil (see party above, masses of people brought drink)
Soft drinks £10

I've found it a lot cheaper to do the shopping in person rather than my usual online.

WiryElevator · 22/12/2015 16:26

We3 - I shopped in M & S this morning and they had masses of all their Xmas food on the shelves. Plenty of stock and choice.
