Can we have a 'what board games are you getting' chat thread please?

Choosing the board games is my favourite part of Christmas shopping! :o

Unfortunately it is DH's turn to choose the main family game this year so I've reluctantly relinquished control Blush - he's chosen Castle Panic, although the new cooperative Thunderbirds game came a close second.

For the DCs I've got that Bounce Off one that is advertised on telly - looks a bit of a five minute wonder, but they both go gooey over it whenever it comes on, and I'm thinking that will be the Santa present (as they know mum would never buy it Wink).

DSCs (teens/young adult, all live together) are getting a couple as a joint gift - the Batman edition of Love Letter, and the London Game.

DCs always get Top Trumps in their stockings, so DD (8) has Monster High and DS (6) has the retro style Transformers.

Trying to resist the temptation to add more Hmm

Thanks toffee Sushi Go looks like a good option.

Does anyone have Telestrations?

fuzzpig · 03/12/2015 17:47

I've not played Telestrations, but I have played the game it's based on numerous times - it's a party favourite among my friends, we call it Paper Telephone. We just start with writing a phrase like 'the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog' or 'Harry Potter played Quidditch'.

The actual game seems to have cards suggesting words to draw, but other than that I don't think it would really be necessary to buy it to play it IYSWIM (I can give you more detailed instructions if you want) - it's just jazzed up 'consequences' really so you can just use pen and paper :)

I was all set to buy 7 Wonders for DH and then a friend said they had that but preferred Dominion. Anyone have any experience of the latter? We need a good strategy game for two, which DD can play as she gets older but mostly it's just for us.
I also looked at Pandenic but it reminded me of Forbidden Island, am I wildly mistaken? In the same way Camel Up reminds me of the Really Nasty Horseriding Game. Like same actions in a different setting.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 03/12/2015 18:47

oh lord more options cropping up!

Wolfcub · 03/12/2015 19:14

Pandemic is really good Choccy, the game develops differently each time you play and depending on what characters you choose. It.definitely does play like forbidden island

ChipsandGuac · 03/12/2015 19:24

We love QBitz. It gets very competitive in this house!

Toffeelatteplease · 03/12/2015 19:38

choccyjules

I have both seven wonders and Dominion as various expansions.

Seven wonders is useless for two, they have cobbled up rules for two but it only really works 3+. Dominion is good with two (get the Dominion: intrigue base pack it's more interesting Dominion ). Dominion is easier to get to grips with.

Have a look at Lords of Waterdeep, I think it is a better all rounder than both. Very playable with two but still good fun for larger numbers too.

Toffeelatteplease · 03/12/2015 19:44

7 wonders fans you need the Leaders expansion!

Improves the game vastlyGrinGrinGrin

fuzzpig · 03/12/2015 19:45

I had to stop playing QBitz with the rest of the family because I was too quick :o the DCs just challenge themselves now rather than racing, and I get them to design their own patterns on squared paper.

Sometimes I see if I can build the pattern upside down (so if you flip it over it makes the right pattern IYSWIM) just for a change.

It's a really cool game and we've got a lot out of it even though we don't use it as a game now. I'd like to get the second version (with wavy lines rather than straight, so not sure I can really justify another £15-20!)

Ooh, that's another recommendation to consider, thanks. And thanks for the comments about my options.

fresta · 03/12/2015 20:52

So excited, my games parcel came today, I chose The Magic Labyrinth, Dixit, and Katamino Deluxe for my dd, to add to Exploding Kittens which I bought on Amazon's Black Friday deals last week. I ordered from Games Lore, they delivered quickly and for a good price. They were very helpful on the phone too and the guy even went to the warehouse to check whether they had English or German stock of Dixit- it was English! So hard to resist unwrapping them but going to hide them away before I do!

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 03/12/2015 22:08

Best game for two out of Ticket to Ride and 7 Wonders please

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 03/12/2015 22:09

or ticket to ride and dominion

amarmai · 03/12/2015 22:46

how about UNO?

Dancergirl · 04/12/2015 00:00

How do you play exploding kittens??

Dancergirl · 04/12/2015 00:02

Hanabi looks good but it doesn't say how many players, anyone know?

fuzzpig · 04/12/2015 00:46

Can't lay my hands on my copy tonight Dancer but will have a look as soon as I can. I guess theoretically you could play with two, but it wouldn't have the same strategies in a way as you generally have to discuss with others what you're going to tell somebody about their cards. If that makes any sense! So 3 or more would be best anyway.

Tomorrow (today) I get to go to the game shop. I'm being taken for lunch too, in a lovely restaurant that I haven't visited for ages (as it's my birthday next week) but in a way I'm more excited about the game shop! I'm not going to get any big games unless they happen to have a sale, but I'm thinking of getting another small one or 3 :o :o

Also, has anyone played Parfum? Looks interesting, I think DD might like it.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO

Ticket to ride Europe map (or Lords of Waterdeep)

Seven wonders is virtually unplayable 2 players. Dominion doesn't come out as often as ticket to ride. personally I prefer Lords of Waterdeep....

Toffeelatteplease · 04/12/2015 08:26

Personally if I was rebuilding my games collection from scratch I would buy

Ticket to ride Europe or Lords of Waterdeep (then the other), sushi go, 7 wonders.

If your interested in games you cover most player numbers from 2 to 7 and short to long play length, with these combination of games.

Then any order Small world, Dominion:Intrigue, Catan.

GrouchingTiggerHiddenSomething · 04/12/2015 08:33

We think Hanabi works well with two players :)

frenchfancy · 04/12/2015 08:41

7 wonders leaders expansion is now on the Christmas list :)

We don't really like Hanabi, but I can't explain why.

Dancergirl · 04/12/2015 10:17

french do you want to sell me your set? Grin

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 04/12/2015 11:34

can you play 7 wonders with three?

Looking at lords of waters deep!
