Book suggestions for a book-obsessed three year old

I'm looking for some good story books to ask relatives to buy for my three year old son this Christmas. Books that your four year olds love would be great, as I want them to last him until next Christmas.
He loves Meg and Mog, Julia Donaldson (think we have all these!), chris haughton books - oh no george is a fave, mr men.
We have already bought him Journey by Aaron Becker, but we want some more involved books that have longer story lines as he is starting to follow plots a lot better.
Thank you for any suggestions

The Jolly Christmas Postman is my ultimate favourite.

BaffledSomeMore · 09/11/2014 00:57

Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs books are good.

GinIsCalling · 09/11/2014 00:58

Thanks both, and I just remembered mog the cat from my own childhood so am popping those on the list too.

The following have been hits with DD this year (who will be 3.9 at Christmas):

The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch
Anything by Shirley Hughes, in particular Sally's Secret
Harriet You Drive Me Wild by Mem Fox
Anything my Lynley Dodd (Hairy Maclary etc)
She also likes Golden book fairy tales like Jack in the Beanstalk and The Three Little Pigs
The Lion in the Meadow by Margaret Mahy
The Jolly Postman

This Christmas DD is getting:
Mog's Christmas
My Mummy's Bag (loves handbags)

I'm also hoping to find an age appropriate book about bodies as this is currently and area of great interest.

Colin and the snooze box

Much loved from the age of your DS and occasionally still requested for a duvet session by my DSs, now 12 and 10, for nostalgia's sake.

KittieCadaver · 09/11/2014 07:18

Pirates Next Door and The Pirate Cruncher by Jonny Duddle. Fantastic books to read, which is always a bonus.
Also DS really enjoys the Early Reader books, we got a collection from The Book People.

KittieCat · 09/11/2014 07:18

Sorry, not changed from Halloween name...

Homebird8 · 09/11/2014 07:19

Ivor the Engine

We love the Thomas The Tank collection and the Mr Men collection! I think there are about 60 books in each set so something different every night. Classics and brilliant price at the Book People.

BirdingWidow · 09/11/2014 09:03

My DS loves The Disgusting Sandwich by Gareth Shaw. I highly recommend it - and the illustrations are wonderfully witty.

pocketsized · 09/11/2014 09:04

Oliver Jeffers does some lovely books, some are a bit older but the stories and illustrations are beautiful.

antimatter · 09/11/2014 09:18

The tiger who came to tea.

ipswichwitch · 09/11/2014 09:19

Dinosaurs/pirates/aliens love underpants
The dinosaur that pooped a planet

So any of the Alfie books or dogger is a particular fave
The other goose or anything by Judith Kerr

Sootgremlin · 09/11/2014 13:41

Second Hugless Douglas, also the Knight ones by David Melling. The kiss that missed is the first.

The Alfie Books by Shirley Hughes - my ds 3.6 has loved these for over a year, Alfie's feet and Alfie gets in first are good to start.

Harry and Bucketful of Dinosaurs

Mog books

Dr Suess particularly Green Eggs and Ham, Cat in the Hat and One Fish Two Fish.

Wibbly Pig and Kipper books by Mick Inkpen always go down well, as do Percy the Parkkeeper books by Nick Butterworth.

SkullytonFlowers · 09/11/2014 15:20

This is My Book by mick inkpen is also a hit in this house, more-so now ds can read and get some of the jokes in it.
