DS is 7. It is all he wants for reading and games. I'd thought about the kindle fire but the game he likes (minecraft) isn't available on it I don't think.

There is no way we can stretch to an iPad. We'd be £150 absolute max. Would prefer much less as we don't have any family beyond us so no grandparent gifts or cash he could contribute towards this.

Thanks.

If he really wants an ipad then you can get refurbed ipad1's within budget - like this?

Otherwise, I have heard good things about the Hudl but we don't actually have one...

My DC ( 10 and 7) have kindle fires. They do play Minecraft on them. TBH I dont think it is the full version of minecraft, but according to DS the difference between the Kindle version and the full version is less and less. I found the Kindles (mercifully) easy to set up, including the parental controls.
When DDs Kindle died, 11 months after purchase Amazon replaced without any question at all.
Overall I would say the Kindle would be an ideal purchase... Lots of the games are free, and its easy to keep an eye on what they are up to.

Minecraft is available as an app on Android: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mojang.minecraftpe&hl=en_GB

Is Hudl Android? Think that is one of the cheaper tablet options.

Hulababy · 15/10/2014 18:43

The tablet version is a Pocket Version. Its smaller to allow the game to run more smoothly on the smaller processors, etc.

Hulababy · 15/10/2014 18:44

I wouldn't recommend an iPad 1 - you need at least 2 upwards. The iPad1 can no longer be updated and many of the games no longer run on it.

currieaddict · 15/10/2014 18:45

Whizz, that's great news. I'd prefer the fire but will look at a refurbed iPad too. Thanks.

TheOnlyPink · 15/10/2014 18:54

I have a kindle fire and my 7 year old plays minecraft on it, he wants his own tablet for Christmas and I think we will get him a kurio after seeing someone on here recommend it. It's between that and the kindle fire!

stealthsquiggle · 15/10/2014 19:05

Yes, hudls are Tesco Android tablets. Have had good reviews from everyone I have talked to who has one.

stealthsquiggle · 15/10/2014 19:07

Lots of other affordable android tablets too - like this one

marne2 · 15/10/2014 19:57

We have bought the hudl2 for dd1, she wants it to play minecraft and another game on.

andsmile · 15/10/2014 20:39

the only Id stay away from Kurio - its 'swipes slow' and you just cant get the apps the kids like. Our charge broke we had to admit it was a white elephant for us.

We have chosen to replace with an Ipad mini - I got a new one from Tesco last week £160 - It was reduced a little, then 10% code off MSE, then I used m y clubcard vouchers to do the boost thing (worht double value) - so all in £80+ saved.

We wanted the ipad for Apps, sharing data (as we have other devices).

itstheyearzero · 15/10/2014 20:44

Thes HP8 tablet looks good for the price, I am thinking of getting my DS one for Xmas so I can have my Google Nexus back!

wishywashywanda · 15/10/2014 20:46

Have a quick look on hotukdeals, there's a offer on the hudl at the min.

cindydog · 15/10/2014 20:49

I am thinking of buying my 11yr old son a tablet and I was thinking the samsing galaxy.I cant afford an ipad. Has anyone any opinions on the samsung?

JavaSparrow · 15/10/2014 22:11

Amazed no one is suggesting nexus. Love mine can mn all day on it. Can set passwords for different users so DC can use too. Great parent locks too.
For the price of one iPad, got three for the house. Blush

oslomum · 15/10/2014 22:15

dh prefers nexus to ipad, for same reason :)

simpson · 15/10/2014 22:30

I m getting my DC a tablet each for Xmas and an iPad is out as (a) too pricey and (b) they both get online homework which needs flash.

I have been looking at a hudl and I have to say am impressed so far Smile

jThompson · 16/10/2014 08:16

Argos are selling refurbished tablets on eBay at the moment. Some good deals to be had. M

jThompson · 16/10/2014 08:18

They have the nexus 7 for under £100. The slightly older model but we have no problems running anything on it and the nexus screens are really good.

CookieB · 16/10/2014 10:19

Highly recommend the hudl as well. Ds has this and prefers it to my iPad mini! Battery is far superior too. Plus you can't argue with the price.

misscph1973 · 16/10/2014 10:32

Great inspiration in this thread! I had never hard of Kurio, and I had never considered Kindle Fire.

So far I have been looking at Acer tablets, I have a very standard Acer laptop myself that I am very happy with, it's rock solid, and I use it for work, so it gets plenty of use, but ha never failed me. So I am thinking that Acer tablets would be of equal value.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 17/10/2014 22:06

ive got an Asus memo and its brilliant! cost £109 a couple months ago from very with 29.99 accident cover for 3 years :-) runs on android and play store so lots of apps and not had any problems with it!

I spent a long time researching them and this one came out with very few problems by the majority of reviewers, even besting some of the more expensive brands. I also read it is also made by same people as nexus but with a smaller pricetag. very easy to use and set up

so another one to consider Grin

BaffledSomeMore · 17/10/2014 22:15

Very happy with our Nexus which is 18 months old. Dd's Hudl is newish but seems ok.

We bought the Hudl with doubled up Tesco points :)
