Good family board games (suitable for 6 yr old)

Any suggestions? We like to give DS some kind of game for Christmas that we can all play together.

We already have junior monopoly, hungry hippos, operation, frustration and various orchard toys ones. Ideally something that's fun for us all unlike shopping list

My dd is six and loves the following

Chess
Uno
Connect 4
Mousetrap
Guess who

In terms of family fun, I would lose mousetrap purely because the trap is fun but not the game!

Uno has been an unexpected hit, a bit if strategy but a lot of dumb luck keeps it even !

There's also a set of Melissa and doug card games with go fish, old maid and animal rummy in it that dd1 enjoys, I know that's not technically a board game though

When my children were small there was a game called "whatever next" at ELC it had three sections to it and you had to either sing act or do something else ok for all the family and it is good for confidence building too. We only stopped playing it when they moved out of home. Note to self ( get one for my certain to appear in the next 5 years grandchildren) brill game hope they still do it.

Junior Monopoly is popular in our house.
The Pictureka is another enjoyable
Bingo.
A card game like Uno but more basic, think it's call What /wot.
Mexican train is good but the youngest (5yrs) needs a hand.

dd had a build a beetle game which was a big hit, not sure if you can still get it, I think ours came from woolies.

We got Labyrinth for ds2 last year for christmas when he was 5 - it was all he wanted having seen the adverts on tv.

He absolutely loves it and got the hang of it very quickly. he's able to win it playing against adults because you can work out a perfect route through the labyrinth and the next person that goes can screw you completely.

We had some family over at christmas including several late teenagers/early 20-somethings. They all got drawn into the games and enjoyed playing - and also noted that they did have to play - it wasn't like some games that they would play with the dc that they can do whilst carrying on a conversation or doing a lego model for another dc or whatever - if they wanted to win (and they are a competitive bunch, even against a 5 year old!) they had to be involved in the game and play it Grin

Home Bargains often seems to have amazingly cheap good quality brand name games in the run up to christmas - I got several last year (albeit not labyrinth). Plus B&M had lego games at half price or less.

Another vote for Qwirkle - bought after recommendation on here and it is great for all ages from about 5-6 to adult. Works for 2 or more players and a game lasts about half an hour. Perfect.

Lego shave the sheep very good but I think discontinued. We have Lego creationary and Hogwarts but not fond of them.

Family version of trivial pursuit is very good. I have a 10yr old and 6yr old who love it, the 6yr old was the winner last time we played!

Also recommend RummiKub, gets very addictive!

Not a board game but Lego shave a sheep is great. We take it on holidays with because it takes up very little space.

Just remembered the card game name : whot!

We take it when on holiday, even to the local pub (not a hive of activity) and play it over drinks and crisps with the children. Gosh we are wild...

Carcassonne - basic game and then if you like it can get loads of add ons that make it more interesting as he gets older

Forbidden island - gets you to work as a team to win against the game

Monopoly deal - card game based on but totally different to monopoly. Quite brutal though!

It's a type of snap. Matching game. I have played it with all ages from 5 years old up and have to sat that everybody I have played it with has gone on to buy their own set....spread the love !

Uno extreme and Sorry are favourites in our house. Unfortunately, you cannot buy sorry in the shops any more, but we got our 1970s copy from Ebay. The girls love it! They're 10 and 7 and have been playing those games for past couple of years.
