Stocking fillers. I don't understand!

Can somebody explain. People call things like DVDs and books stocking fillers. But how do you fit those things into a standard size stocking? Or do you have big stockings? For the size of my children's stockings it has to be things like Lego mini figure packet, hair stuff, that sort of thing. DVDs and books are amongst the main presents?!

Same here. Stocking fillers in my house are wee bits and pieces to buy me time to wake up. DVDs and books are in the main presents.
Stockings are chocolate Santa, bobbles, character socks that kind of thing.

DS has a fairly wide stocking but I would still put DVDs / Books under the tree. I stuff it with mostly sweets, hairproducts, cheap smellies + the obligatory satsuma and pound coin.

Same here, just bitty bits and undies to buy waking up time. Anything else goes on their piles downstairs to make them go further

Stockings = pound shop tat/chocolate + satsuma.

Here it is an orange and a drink, toy cars, bubble bath, bubbles, little silly toys and a little silly book

Just something to keep them occupied until we have woken up a bit and can head downstairs

Stockings: mini fig, satsuma, choc orange, hair clips, choc coins, pez dispenser, rubbers, pencil/pen, pair of pants or socks and a very small toy (lego kit, hex bug type).

Books, CDs, DVDs, these are part of any main presents. My kids have 10 ish main presents but these include books, a DVD, stationary, slippers etc.
I guess others have bigger stockings/structure it all a bit differently.

Pillowcase here as well

Large-ish homemade felt stockings that we use will just about fit a trade paperback book or a (cheap) DVD. If I want to put a hardback book in then it will spill out of the top.

Big stockings from santa - 8-10 pressies each, inc book, game, docks, pjs, small toys, new lunchbox

Ds has a knitted stocking, old fashioned stocking look a like, and it's got a lot of stretch to it.

Everything goes in a pillowcase here, same as when I was growing up. They are older teens now and Santa is long gone, but they still hang their pillowcases over the fireguard in the sitting room before they go to bed.

We have enormous felt stockings about the size an elephant would wear.
We do stockings from Father Christmas and under tree pressies from us and others. So in stocking is book, DVD, camera for ds1, nintendo DS for ds2, socks, chocolate coins, satsuma. There is usually one thing in there from their letter to FC which is why the camera and DS is in the stocking.
I think all families do it their own way which is great. I love Christmas tradition!

Our DDs have pillowcases which are incredibly roomy and take a lot of filling! DVDs, CDs etc go in their stockings, along with the rest of their stocking fillers.
Then main presents under the tree.
FC only brings stockings, nothing else. But similar to Worried, they contain a mixture of surprises and things they have asked for.

Never used to have stockings but we have stretchy largish ones with a cheap DVD, socks, face cloth, choc, teeny toys, rubber duck, pens. And 3 big presents under the tree.

Stocking fillers here were pants/tights, a bag of chocolate coins, a watch (cheap kids ones)and a tamagotchi (cheap ones)

Books and dvds are definitely main presents here.

DCs have sack things but DP & I have knitted stockings which are v difficult to fill as have lots of loopy wool on inside so everything gets tangled up in it.

Am still looking for a chocolate smoking set to put in DHs along with some coconut sweet tobacco as in days of yore.

My children have big stockings. I like them to be full,for the visual effect, but I do bulk them out with chocolate Santas and big books.

In terms of DVDs, it would depend on the cost as to whether it goes in the stocking or not. If it was a cheap £3 DVD, then yes, but a new release £10 DVD probably wouldn't.

We have Smallish stockings, cheaper to fill up!

It is used by marketing executives to try and get us into a mindset that an item costing £10-20 is really unsubstantial and not really a proper gift, so people feel the need to spend more and more. All the shops who proclaim 'we wish you a merry Christmas' they should just change it to the truth 'we wish we could think of more ways of getting you to spend more money'.
It's why I don't celebrate Christmas. I hate the commercial greed. People spending money in the name of someone they don't think about the 364 days of the year. I treat my family and friends throughout the year instead.

Stockings here are just stuffed with sweets

Small stockings here, with chocolates, a book, small Lego kit, card game, pencils/pencil case - little things. Which still don't really fit in so always one or two Santa gifts sitting on the chest by the bed.

One larger gift under the tree from us, something from each grandparent and something from my siblings & their children. We've probably had the smallest Christmas this year in terms of quantity of gifts - quality (I think) was much higher and the family time playing all the games was some of the best it's been.
