In a nice dress or similar I mean, not as in 'come as a penguin'?

Just wondering really...bit of a mix bag in our extended family.

we wear new clothes or something quite dressy

DC get a new outfit each to wear

nomorecrumbs · 20/12/2013 19:03

Something nice but comfortable. And something sparkly is essential, even if it's just a silvery jumper :)

ElfOnTheShelf · 20/12/2013 19:03

Not exactly but I tend to wear a comfy knitted dress with some bright tights so I look festive and kind of smart but I can still cook (and eat loads) but still be comfortable when I'm slumming it on the floor opening pressies with the DC Xmas Smile.

Lottiedoubtie · 20/12/2013 19:04

Yes new or newish dress. Different, still nice (but not neccersarily 'new') for Boxing Day.

Don't know why really, my family aren't known for being formal the rest of the year!

VoldemortsNipple · 20/12/2013 19:04

Yes, everybody does. We all have new clothes and the dcs have new shoes as well. When they were little, I would always dress them in smart party type clothes but they are teenagers now and are more smart casual otherwise they wouldn't wear them again.

Goandplay · 20/12/2013 19:06

I make an effort , plan my outfit, do my hair, wear make up etc but my outfit will still be smart/casual. No dresses just comfortable normal day to day clothes iykwim.

MoreThanChristmasCrackers · 20/12/2013 19:06

I usually wear something new or a nice dress in red.
Not sparkly though. Maybe I'll manage a bit of sparkly jewellery Xmas Grin

rainbowfeet · 20/12/2013 19:08

Oh yes! Grin
Nice new dress or smart outfit always , same with dc's

ChasingSquirrels · 20/12/2013 19:10

No. Jeans, top & my big warm cardi.

sonlypuppyfat · 20/12/2013 19:13

Thank the Lord for ChasingSquirrels

HoHoHopelessAtNamingBabies · 20/12/2013 19:16

I usually wear a nice dress but 39+2 pregnant on Christmas Day this year so it will be black trousers a a sparkly top which I've worn to death in the last few weeks already!

I've bought DD who is nearly three a party dress which she will love but DH thinks a Christmas jumper and leggings might be more practical - guessing it'll be both over the course of the day!

We all wear our new pjs - does that count? Xmas Grin

CMOTDibbler · 20/12/2013 19:24

Nope.

Aintnobodylovesnanbetter · 20/12/2013 19:25

This year i'm wearing my bargain great plains jumper dress Grin

vvviola · 20/12/2013 19:30

Yes. And DC get new outfit too. I have usually gone with something wearable again, not necessarily too dressy but definitely festive.

Is a bit of a bone of contention with DH who just wants to slob about, and is even harder now we're here in NZ as it's hard to be dressy in shorts & tshirts.

So this year the girls and I are going with nice sundresses and letting DH wear what he wants ... and we'll probably still be over dressed at DH's family Christmas according to DH.

fluffydressinggown · 20/12/2013 19:48

We always wear something dressy but casual. This year I have a new dress and DH will probably wear jeans with a shirt and jumper.

NotGoodNotBad · 20/12/2013 20:49

Yes we do - at my instigation. Smile Just feels more of an occasion if we're not wearing the same stuff as every other day of the year. We don't buy new stuff specially though, just pick from what we've got.

ElfOnTheShelf · 20/12/2013 20:54

Aintnobody snap Xmas Grin

YearsMidnight · 20/12/2013 21:16

No! Well, I'll probably wear a dress. Boys will be in PJs most of the day, DH likes his waistcoats, but not wearing anything new. I'd be mortified if I sloshed hot turkey fat down my posh new frock. As for doing my hair specially... that would not be worth it after a couple of hours in a steamy kitchen!

maldivemoment · 20/12/2013 21:19

I would love to know how folk find the time for new outfit, hair washed and styled, make up applied, etc???

By the time we're up, opened presents, quaffed a glass of champagne, had breakfast, got 2 little ones ready and then attempt to race out the door for a Christmas service, I often look down at myself not even knowing what I'm actually wearing!!! (in my defense I'm sure i look 'ok' just not the styled vision I would love to be!)

I aspire to be glam and preened but have no idea how to achieve such dreams...

Tips, anyone?

PS Typically, children will look 'postcard' beautiful Xmas Smile

Coumarin · 20/12/2013 21:30

I always intend to but with all the other buying and planning there is to do I usually don't get round to it.

I wanted a cosy jumper to wear with my Hush rushed skirt this year. I can't find one that isn't too short or too long and realised the skirt is a bit tight to be wearing during the biggest meal of the year so yet again I've failed on the outfit front.

I do have the Asos jumper dress in pink that is new but I'm saving that for Boxing Day.

I'll paint my nails in gold glitter polish to make amends. Xmas Grin

nooka · 20/12/2013 21:32

My family always dressed up very formally for the evening meal, not in new clothes particularly unless we happened to get something nice, in fact my father wore the same dress suit and smoking jacket for 40 odd years.

In contrast my own little family tend to wear PJs all day, often new ones.

I'd like a mixture of both really, but formality isn't really a family trait and as we've moved to far away from my family to see them at Christmas we just go with the flow really.

Mrswellyboot · 20/12/2013 21:32

I wear a nice dress. Have one I bought for my sons christening so I will wear that.

LittleBoxes · 20/12/2013 21:34

My mum always makes us dress up. This year there's just me, DH and DD, and I am seriously considering staying in my jimjams all day Grin

2anddone · 20/12/2013 21:54

New pjs go on Christmas eve and we might get dressed on boxing day but usually its a major pj fest for 2 whole days. It is just me and dc though so noone to complain Xmas Grin
