I'm torn between a wig I got one year and a set of glitter fun wombles I got another year :)

I think age 8/9 was peak excitement for me at Christmas and I think that is mainly the pressies I remember. Other pretty good hits were:

An emu puppet
a big bear with tartan legs and elastic on its feet that you could hook through your own feet so you could dance with it
A bed for a barbie type doll made out a shoe box
A weebles playground set
a small lego set (just mixed bricks etc)

Sindy dining room set with six blue velvet chairs, tiny wine glasses and three sets of knives and forks per place setting. My cousin had the Sindy paddling pool set complete with doll size lilo that I was sooo jealous of.

Loving this thread Smile My most treasured present was a Sindy wall of sound. I also loved my 'My little Pony stable' and a baby doll (doll that supposedly looked like a real baby), that went everywhere with me for years! Lovely memories.

usualsuspect · 14/11/2013 16:56

A little real record player in a suitcase.

I loved it and wish I had kept it.

You know, it's really weird but I can't really remember much about the presents I received at Christmas as a child - my memories are all of my family and the time we spent together.

Yes - stockings; church; lunch; tree presents; possibly walk, depending on time and weather; washing up; tea; more washing up; games or Christmas toys or Christmas books. When we were older, in my uni years on Christmas Eve, we'd go to the pub catching up with old school friends, then went to church for the midnight service and a lift home with Mum and Dad.

I don't remember so many presents, other than the farm set and scarf I mentioned before, but I do remember the stockings. My stocking was actually a rather unattractive woollen grey boot sock with a pink ribbon to hang it up; it's still hung on my bedroom door today, but it's a bit moth-eaten. Anyway, it was on the outside of my bedroom door handle, and in the morning, it would be at the end of the bed. It always contained:

  • A satsuma;
  • One of each type of nut - 1 walnut, 1 brazil, 1 hazelnut, 1 almond, and in later years, when the local shops were getting some exotic stuff in, 1 pecan;
  • One each of the current coins of the realm, in shiny, beautiful, mint condition;
  • Then there was usually also a small bar of chocolate or packet of sweets of some sort.
  • There would be something like a pencil or pen, maybe a small notebook or other piece of stationery (there were a good couple of years when scented and other novelty rubbers were in,) or a bookmark or something.
  • There would be some other small toy of some sort - maybe a card game or a bouncy ball or something.
  • There might be a small book.
  • And underneath the stocking, because it didn't fit, there was always an Annual - I had the Mandy Annual for quite a few years, but others were Bunty, the Beano, the Dandy, Smash Hits - one for me, one for my sister. All from Father Christmas. Then there were proper presents under the tree, from family members and friends, but few of them have made such an impression as waking up to the stocking, in the icy room (we didn't have central heating), having to be quiet, because Mum & Dad were still asleep, and shivering with cold and excitement, undoing the sellotape round the wrapping paper, to see what was inside, and then eventually hearing Mum and Dad wake up and rushing into their bedroom in excitement to show them the surprises that Father Christmas had brought.

A travel alarm clock when I was about 7 or 8 (which would have been mid-1970s).
One of those that folded out from a case to form a triangle.
It had luminous dots at each hour and I remember the thrill of turning off the light at bedtime and watching for the dots to shine in the dark.
Such a grown up present, with built in magic too.

blacktreaclecat · 14/11/2013 22:20

I had that Sindy house with the lift too. It was fab. My grandpa made a bed and my grandma made bedding for it.
My best present ever was a red sledge with a dolly sitting on it. I must have been 5.
Also I got an Amstrad computer one year and Ssnta wrote me a message on the screen. I was amazed!

humphryscorner · 14/11/2013 22:21

A pink Raleigh racer.... It was beautiful . I was 9.

soontobeslendergirl · 14/11/2013 22:32

Awww - it may only be one day a year but it's a pretty good one :)

usualsuspect if you glance further up thread, I had one of those too - I think mine had red trim round it - looked like a vanity case/small suitcase but when you opened it up it was a proper record player - loved it!!

Baby beans. It was a little doll, with a plastic head and a beanie baby type body (beanie babies had not yet been invented!) I loved it so much that I declined to open any of the rest of my presents.

It was my favourite toy for years and years until eventually the fabric wore thin and came apart and all the beans fell out Shock

MyBoilsAreFab · 14/11/2013 22:46

A Stylophone.
A teddy bear pyjama case which my mum had made. I really wish I had kept it.

MyBoilsAreFab · 14/11/2013 22:48

On the up side, Stylophones seemed to make a comeback 2/3 years ago, and a friend bought one for DS. (they are very noisy!)

ShatnersBassoon · 14/11/2013 22:49

Sega Mega Drive. I really didn't think my mum and dad would have allowed it, so I was completely bowled over when I saw it. Best Christmas ever.

GeorgianMumto5 · 14/11/2013 22:50

A dolls house made by my dad. It was rubbish and collapsed on a regular basis but I loved it so much.

A rag doll made by my mum, complete with an entire hand-sewn wardrobe, some of which matched my own clothes.

A rocking doll's crib made by my grandad.

Until I typed them here it hadn't occurred to me that the best gifts were handmade.

maillotjaune · 14/11/2013 22:59

A ride on toy which was an HP sauce bottle on wheels. If my parents didn't have the photos I wouldn't believe such a thing had ever existed. I was about 2.

EugenesAxe · 14/11/2013 23:07

Sindy cooker, without doubt. All about the sound effects.

We had Sindy equipment, because Barbie's was tacky and naff, and Barbie dolls because Sindy was too frumpy Hmm

TheFabulousIdiot · 14/11/2013 23:14

Pogo stick. About 1979/80.
I made several holes in my grandparent's lawn, I remember it was very cold.

hyenafunk · 15/11/2013 09:19

I got twin dolls when I was three which I named Charlotte and Stephanie and I carried them EVERYWHERE with me from there on out until I was probably about eight or nine. My DGM still has them at her house to give to my DC when they're of an age to appreciate them. I loved them because my DF told me this story of how he rescued them from some warehouse where they'd been abandoned. I was always a sucker for rescuing things Grin.

Also loved my cabbage patch doll and this big pink castle I got and played with constantly. Never liked Barbie though, if I got a Barbie doll I used to chop her hair off and clothes up before decapitating her. Delightful child I was.

prettymess · 15/11/2013 12:03

I think it's the boom box I got when I was 12!

prettymess · 15/11/2013 12:04

Oh and a "proper" Barbie, not a cheap fake version. I was over the moon.

magentastardust · 15/11/2013 13:45

I had a Sindy Kitchen that I just loved. Also remember my sister and I being so excited one year at getting snuggle bums and a pound puppy.

I had this Palitoy office set which I loved and played with for years! Wish I had kept it my dd's would have loved it too.

My birthday is just a couple of days away from Xmas so birthday presents and Christmas presents are a bit of a blur but things over the years that I still remember are

A lights alive
Sindy tent (which was basically an inflatable blue triangle)
Cotton Candy my little pony
A cabbage patch doll -Adele Modesty -The first thing I ever really asked for -we just used to ask Santa for a surprise!

The thing I remember most about Xmas when I was little though was all creeping to the top of the stairs and peering over and all being excited and saying 'has he been yet' -was very magical.

Also sitting round the dinner table with xmas hats on and reading cracker jokes and mum and dad's pride on the Xmas dinner they had produced!

magentastardust · 15/11/2013 14:04

Just spent a lovely 1/2 hour there looking through the 'vintage toys' bit of ebay and remembering toys such as 'my little pony sea pony' that I had, popples and keepers!
Happy memories!

Pixiepie · 16/11/2013 18:44

A cindy bedroom set. I loved it soooo much! I had the bed, dressing table and wardrobe. A close second was when i got the cindy horse

bundaberg · 16/11/2013 18:51

I think it was one of my dolls.

I'd seen a baby boy doll (complete with penis) in a shop and wanted it. My mum had said no as it was too expensive.
My lovely Grandpa who had a penchant for spoiling me (first girl on that side of the family for eons) insisted on buying me one. My nana (knitter) and great-Aunt (seamstress) filled a small suitcase with outfits for him, including a dear little romper suit made from parachute silk!

I was just chuffed to bits as I totally wasn't expecting it! I loved him for years and years and still have him now :)

My Grandpa died when I was only 8, so sadly the spoiling didn't last very long! haha.

Bamaluz · 16/11/2013 19:08

A proper Silvercross dolls' pram, the old fashioned type with big wheels and suspension. I can't remember how old I was but I couldn't see over it when the hood was up.
