Dd1 loves books so was thinking of getting her a box set for Christmas, she is reading Percy Jackson at the moment but I can't seem to find a Percy Jackson box set ( so have ordered her a couple of the individual books ), she loves fantasy and magic, really enjoyed harry potter, loved war horse, doesn't like girls books and doesn't like classics such as Enid blyton.

Any ideas?

Is she too young for the hunger games? Or hitch hikers guid to the galaxy?

I think 10 is a bit young for those suggested. If you google the book people they have great selections. The Michael morpurgo collection is popular with my lot.

If she loved War Horse, has she already got the Michael Morpurgo box sets? DS has a couple which we got from the Book People. There is the box set of the Chronicles of Narnia, of course. Has she read the Spiderwick Chronicles? I know the Book People are doing the Roman Mysteries at the moment - DS loved those. And have you tried her on the Time Riders series by Alex Scarrow?

TBH, there aren't necessarily loads of box sets out there but there are plenty of fabulous series which you could look at!

Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper?
Or Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander.
Or Chrestomanci books by Diana Wynne Jones.

Thank you, will have a look at those, I think she has read the spiderwick books, she's read a couple of Terry pratchett books but wasn't too taken with them.

the hunger book..arnt that much darker than harry potter..so i would say yes.

RhondaJean · 21/10/2013 20:34

My oldest read the hunger games at 10 and loved them. It depends on your child.

Theincidental · 21/10/2013 20:39

The song of the lioness quartet by tamora pierce. There's also the immortals quartet and a couple of others.

They are fantasy novels with very strong female characters. They are also witches/wizards etc.

I still love them now!

EmbroideredCloths · 21/10/2013 20:41

Song of the Lioness series by Tamara Pierce, female protagonist but not a girly character. Loved it when I was a pre-teen.

EmbroideredCloths · 21/10/2013 20:41

Ooo cross post, Incidental!

Theincidental · 21/10/2013 20:43

Ooh, spooky cross post!

I. Just checked and there are more series now! I think I may have to put them in my Xmas list! (I hope 30+ isn't too old!)

Seriously OP they are fantastic books.

My DD is 11 .
Last Christmas we bought her a Micheal Morpurgo boxed set (War Horse, Kanzukis Kingdom, Escape Shangri-La, King of the Cloud Forest, The Wreck of Zanzibar, The Long Way Home, Why the Whale Came, Dear Ollie, Mr Nobodys Eyes

She bought a book of all the Spiderwick Chronicles a while ago.

soontobeslendergirl · 21/10/2013 21:00

Series I'd recommend would be Skulduggery Pleasant but not sure if there is a box set. very well written and has a female main character but written by a man so seems to appeal to boys and girls.

My boys were fine with the Hunger games at that age tbh but it would depend on the child. They also loved The Saga of Darren Shan if she is not easily spooked - his Demonata series is a wee bit scarier.

Ihatespiders · 21/10/2013 21:56

These were devoured my DD and I on hols this year. Quirky, funny and totally enthralling, we've since loaned the set to three other families!

Garth Nix- Keys to the Kingdom set. 7 books beginning with Mr Monday. Absolutely superb and TKmaxx has the full boxed set for only £14.99

dollybird · 21/10/2013 22:03

My DD got The Dark is Rising series for her birthday. Also the first Artemis fowl book which she read in about 2-3 days and has listed the rest on her Xmas list. That's available in a box set on Amazon.

marriedinwhiteisback · 21/10/2013 22:04

How about the Caroline Lawrence books - they were based in Rome
Lemony Snicket - Unfortunate Events
The Raven's Gate series
Wolf Brother series - Michelle Paviour

dollybird · 21/10/2013 22:04

Oh, and my SIL gave her about 25 Tamora Pierce books that she read as a teenager.

Ireallymustbemad · 21/10/2013 22:05

DS2 (yr 5, 9.5yrs) has just tonight finished the final hunger games book, mockingjay. He loved them all and has been fine with them. He saw the first film with us and we're all booked into seeing the next one the day it comes out!

bumpertobumper · 21/10/2013 22:06

would she like the Narnia series?

Cataline · 21/10/2013 22:07

Another vote for Artemis Fowl! Also the Wind Singer trilogy by William Nicholson although that is quite an emotional read! Grin

Purpletoes · 21/10/2013 22:09

Skull duggery is great

Would also recommend the sabriel trilogy by Garth Nix.

SugarplumKate · 21/10/2013 22:34

Dd (10) enjoyed the Hunger Games series, also The Hobbit.
