Ideas for feel-good Xmas films, suited to adults more than DCs...

So DD isn't really into films (any films - even Disney...), so DH and I tend to try and watch one once DD has gone to bed on Xmas Eve (or before). So I'm looking for ideas... These ones we already have:

The Holiday (love it)
Love Actually (love it)
The Nativity (1) (love it)
A Dog for Christmas (love it)
Elf (meh - not wonderful)
Scrooge (the Musical version - favourite Xmas film ever - reserved for Present wrapping night!!)
Scrooged (don't like this one though...)
A Christmas Carol (Disney version with Jim Carrey - like this one)
White Christmas (wasn't overly keen...)

I think that's all. So you can tell that I like the 'Scrooge/A Christmas Carol' story and I like Rom Coms.

Any suggestions?

TIA

There's that James Stewart film, Wonderful Life? About a chap who is saved from suicide by an angel who shows him the difference he has made?

AmIGoingMad · 07/10/2013 08:28

Muppets Christmas carol- DH and I love it!

Christmas with the kranks- cheesy but amusing and feel good! But then I love 'jingle all the way' too!

Second A Wonderful Life.

I really enjoyed Dan In Real Life. Not a Christmas movie per se but set at Christmas.

The Family Stone

While You Were Sleeping with Sandra Bullock

Thank you!

A Wonderful Life is one I look at buying every year and then never get around to it - right - I'll hop onto Amazon and order it now!!

The Family Stone sounds interesting and I'll look at Dan In Real Life aswell.

I watched the Muppets Christmas Carol as a child but didn't really enjoy it (I was a strange child - hated cartoons aswell...), but maybe I'll try it again... Smile

One that is great and really funny but definitely not for kids is Bad Santa, with Billy Bob Thornton.

DH and I watch this every year with our older DC, once the younger ones have gone to bed and we need a break from 'Christmas Cheer'.

The Grinch is also hilarious, both kids and adults usually love that one. National Lampoons Christmas Vacation is popular here too.

Some classics are:
Holiday Inn
White Christmas
Meet Me In St Louis

Other more recent funny ones I can think of are:
Deck The Halls
Four Christmases

Also really recommend The Family Stone, its funny and sentimental. Love it!

National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
Bad Santa

The Bishops Wife (the black & white version with Cary Grant and David Niven) - not really a rom com and definitely not a musical but lovely and has Cary Grant in Smile

I love a really cheesy film with Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the Teenage Witch) in Holiday in Handcuffs. I want a white Christmas in a log cabin

Always.

I second 'It's a wonderful life' and 'Bad Santa'. They couldn't be more different but DH & I always watch both each Christmas, love them.

PlumpkinPie · 07/10/2013 13:10

A Wonderful Life - definitely
The Grinch - great humour but then Elf is also one of my favourites so maybe you won't love The Grinch either.

MinnieBar · 07/10/2013 13:20

Die Hard.

chicaguapa · 07/10/2013 13:27

Watching this thread as we watch It's a Wonderful Life and we need a new one. It always makes me cry. Even though it was a year since I watched it last.

CockBollocks · 07/10/2013 14:07

Arthur Christmas - it is a cartoon but I love it and would watch with or without the DC.

Lariflete · 08/10/2013 11:56

A Christmas Story - one of my favourites.

patienceisvirtuous · 10/10/2013 08:38

What is the film with Toni Collete and the little boy from the foster home who comes to live with them. Oh, Foster!

That is a lovely Christmas film.

ConsiderablyBiggerBuns · 11/10/2013 11:27

Nativity 2 is due for release on Nov 11th. Haven't seen it but might be a good shout if you liked the frost one. I've got a pre-order in for my Christmas wrapping slot.

MrsBramleyApple · 11/10/2013 11:31

Nativity 2 is DIRE!!!!
I took ds2 to see it last Christmas and it was so far fetched it was laughable!!!

CherryMonster · 11/10/2013 13:14

i have several version of a christmas carol, the original film with george c scott, the newer one with patrick stewart, the disney one with jim carrey and the muppets one. also like christmas with the kranks, miracle on 34th street, the grinch and the polar express. but i am a big child when it comes to christmas Grin

maybe3x · 11/10/2013 13:21

The Family Man with Nicholas Cage is a good one, Deck the Halls is a funny one. Also Trapped in Paradise, again Nicholas Cage, is a good one.

MinnesotaNice · 11/10/2013 13:43

I second 'A Christmas Story'. There's a channel in the US that runs a 24-hour marathon of this movie every Christmas and it usually loops continuously for the better part of the day at our house!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/10/2013 15:35

MrsBramley

YY - and David Tennant smug little face with his wide-eyed open mouth act

MrsBramleyApple · 11/10/2013 17:45

And we had to see him twice over!!!
