Ideas for feel-good Xmas films, suited to adults more than DCs...

So DD isn't really into films (any films - even Disney...), so DH and I tend to try and watch one once DD has gone to bed on Xmas Eve (or before). So I'm looking for ideas... These ones we already have:

The Holiday (love it)
Love Actually (love it)
The Nativity (1) (love it)
A Dog for Christmas (love it)
Elf (meh - not wonderful)
Scrooge (the Musical version - favourite Xmas film ever - reserved for Present wrapping night!!)
Scrooged (don't like this one though...)
A Christmas Carol (Disney version with Jim Carrey - like this one)
White Christmas (wasn't overly keen...)

I think that's all. So you can tell that I like the 'Scrooge/A Christmas Carol' story and I like Rom Coms.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Poundland actually have quite a big selection of Christmas dvds in now.

You'll find them down the Christmas aisle with all the decorations and stuff, rather than with all their other dvds.

A good soppy/cheesy one that I watch every year is Serendipity with Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack. If you like The Holiday you will love it.

Also not set at Christmas but Groundhog Day is fab.

No one has mentioned Miracle on 34th street (old one or remake are both good).

Sort of Christmassyish...
Bridget Jones
Narnia
When Harry Met Sally
Catch me if you Can

I agree with Tig, Bad Santa always makes me laugh. It's my favourite Christmas film that and Dr Zhivago, I know Dr Zhivago isn't really a Christmas film but all that snow makes it seem Christmassy

We always watch Elf at some point, because the dds (now 18 and 16!) insist on it. And dd2 is crazy about Home Alone. Dp and I tend to go for Gremlins. :)

We always watch Family Man with Nicolas Cage - it's a sort of modern day 'It's a Wonderful Life' - and we love it.

Hostile hostages (was called the ref in the us)
Brilliant film

MyBoilsAreFab · 12/11/2013 21:17

I love watching Home Alone at Christmas. And I love Elf.

It's A Wonderful Life is fab, seen it loads of times, am going to get dcs to watch it this year.

Not a film but I happened to watch Friends the other day, Phoebe's wedding one - made me feel really festive.

Has anyone seen New Years Eve, and what is it like?

poorbuthappy · 12/11/2013 21:23

Crap. Don't even think about it.
It's an awful love actually.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 12/11/2013 21:53

I would second Nativity 2 as dire. Not a patch on the first one. DS made me download it. I was visibly wincing - stealing a baby and whitewater rafting with it in a scarf nappy. Hmm

I would agree with loads on here though:

Die Hard & Die Hard 2 are our wrapping presents movies.
A Christmas Carol
It's A Wonderful Life if you can bear it.
National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
Deck the Halls
Nativity - the first one!
The Holiday or Love Actually if you can stomach them.
About a Boy - Christmas theme to it.

How about some Christmas Specials op?

The Office (UK and US)
Royle Family
Vicar of Dibley
Blackadder
Father Ted.

Loads more but all great for a night in cuddled up.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/11/2013 21:58

DD and I really love "Lost Christmas" (Eddie Izzard)
We watched it on Sunday morning (and it's always a weepy moment with the little girl and the firemen)

MyBoilsAreFab · 12/11/2013 22:02

Thanks poor will give it a miss on your review alone Grin
