Brown paper and ribbon

Thinking of doing this for gift wrapping this year with either candy cane, holly sprig, cinnamon sticks but where's the best places to buy the brown paper and oodles of nice ribbon?

Nice, but probably more expensive than wrapping paper and it all ends up in the bin/recycling anyway.

Bah humbug, why not just wrap it in a binliner, it'll only end up in the bin anyway?

Someone on another thread said the pound shops are good for brown paper. Ribbon cheaper by the metre from eBay or a haberdashery.

Bah humbug? moi?!! how did you know? I am a bit, but I have also done the beautiful wrapping thing and was disappointed in the complete disregard for it, that's all...straight in the bin :(

You are right of course, but it's very satisfying looking at a pile of beautifully wrapped presents, and lovely to receive one that someone has gone to a lot of effort on. I only do it for adults, completely pointless for kids.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea, I'm always afraid to do it incase people think its cheap.

Poundland do large rolls of the brown paper in a very good quality

I also like the idea, instead of ribbon to get some embroidery thread and wrap different colours together then wrap around pressie :)
That's prob something that would push the cost up a bit. Although embroidery thread can normally be bought for 20-30p or 5 for £1 ect, They aren't very long

I've just been saving brown packing paper whenever I get deliveries. Amazon and Wilkos pack their parcels out with brown paper instead of air packs or bubble wrap.

Not bothering with it this xmas though, think I will do it next year.

I do this a lot. I buy the brown paper from WH Smith and then curling ribbon from Paperchase. One thing that looks nice is to have a bigger brown paper present tied up and tiered with a couple of red or red and white ones, then all tied with red ribbon and a candy cane, plus a luggage-style brown label tied on.

My local poundland did mini candy canes - 36 for, you've guessed it, a pound! Ideal for smaller pressies

Ikea have those wrap and pack stands with 100 m rolls of brown paper.....must wrap that rolled up doormat carefully in lots of layers. I tie mine with string, like old fashioned parcels, and use parcel tags for gift tags. When you go to the post office, pick up loads of free stickers; airmail, special delivery, recorded delivery etc and put them haphazardly all over the parcel. Buy a stick of sealing wax for £1 melt it over the string, and press down with a fancy button before it sets. Just like a legal seal. You may as well watch The Sound of Music as you wrap, as you'll be humming 'brown paper packages tied up with string'

LOVE the sealing wax idea - where does one buy sealing wax?

Proper ribbon tied in a bow looks much better if you're going down the brown paper route, Everyone does curling ribbon. Brown luggage tags for the labels look nice too, especially the smaller size ones. You can buy on eBay.

Using double-sided sticky tape makes a huge difference in appearance too.

There's loads of ideas/ tutorials on YouTube including how to make little gift bags and tie with ribbon at the top. Especially good for small presents, scarves and the like.

I am doing this with luggage labels and red gingham ribbon from a haberdashery. Home Bargains have candy canes for 79p for a pack of 10 at the moment.
There are lots of good ideas for wrapping on Pinterest. I like the idea of putting a white paper doily between the brown paper and the ribbon - looks a bit snowflakey.

One year I did layers of Christmas carol song sheets on top of the brown paper and underneath the red ribbon - very cute.

I adore red gingham. In fact, I adore gingham full stop - but I look like a milk maid if I wear it, so maybe present wrapping is the way to go with it.

I'm doing brown paper (from Staples) with cream ribbon (eBay) and thin gold ribbon (Dunelm) stuck over the cream ribbon. I'm using brown luggage tags as gift tags.

Hobbycraft brown paper roll is 8m for 3 quid, buy three for two, so works out 2 quid a roll - also I get red wool from the poundshop, candycanes and holly (ouchy!) and luggage tags, use a stamp to decorate the luggage tag.

Looks Lurvely. Only gutted that it only sits under the tree on xmas eve now, as DD knows all about santa now so we need to begin the mystery of it arriving on xmas morning!

I've used brown paper and sheet music and twine this year with the addition of little jingle bells too.

The sodding Elf on the Shelf stuff was done like this and you're not wrong, what a waste for the DC!

However, I will still reserve it for extra-special presents. I bought candy canes today. What do you do with them?
