I got given an amazon voucher recently and thought I would use it as an early Christmas present for myself and get a boxset. Any suggestions? I have in the past few years enjoyed:

The wire
West wing
Sopranos
The L word
Gossip Girl
Sex and the City
The Trip
Episodes

Am enjoying Homeland on tv

An dithering whether I'd enjoy Downton Abbey

Get the Wire unless you already have it. Only series worth owning the box set of imo!

wildpoppy · 12/10/2012 21:30

I have seen the wire

The Walking Dead

Sex and the City

QueefLatina · 12/10/2012 21:37

Posted to soon!

Sex and the City was so good but I don't think there has been anything like it since.

I like Ugly Betty if you don't mind a bit of daft

droves · 12/10/2012 21:43

Chuck or big bang theory, if you like daft US telly .

Or Downton Abbey.

I'd go for game of thrones , or Fringe , but I like sci-fi .

You could always go retro/ cult and get some obscure 60's/70's series ?

nkf · 12/10/2012 21:45

I'm thinking of buying Big Bang Theory. I like to watch it again and again. The Wire is marvellous but I'm not tempted to revisit it. Same with The WEst Wing.

thinkfast · 12/10/2012 21:48

Game of thrones

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 12/10/2012 21:53

Desperate Housewives would be my treat to myself.

Previous boxset treats have included:
Peep Show
The Inbetweeners
The Royle family
The Muppets
Laurel and Hardy
Carry on....

If I was going to splurge it would be a Bond box set....

Anythingforabitofpeace · 12/10/2012 21:55

What about House? There is quite a few series but its a great watch if you like medical dramas.

CookieM0nster · 12/10/2012 22:46

Don't know if it's a boxset, but I identify closely with (& love) your listed choices and highly recommend "Game of Thrones" - it's awesome :-)

Downtown was enjoyable, but 'GOT' is soooo much better ;-)

Failing that - 'Broadwalk Empire'.

In fact - get both ;-)

wildpoppy · 12/10/2012 23:07

Oh I will check those both out. What is game of thrones about?

'Damages' with Glenn Close is good.

I too have enjoyed several of the ones you listed. Hated 'The Wire' though - bought the box set and never watched it (had to use subtitles too - seriously!)

Brothers & Sisters

ThoughtBen10WasBadPokemonOMG · 13/10/2012 07:53

Dexter is Fab

Onadietcolabreak · 13/10/2012 15:50

I just brought watched Downton and watched it within to weeks, Then caught up with the rest on itv player, didn't think I'd get into it, but I am hooked, truly fab!

And Dexter is fantastic. Big Bang if you fancy comedy.

I always treat myself to a few stand up DVDs came Xmas Smile

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 13/10/2012 15:53

Breaking Bad - we saw so many good reviews we caved and bought the first season, and are currently working through the second. It's fantastic - plot, acting, cinematography, the lot.

justabigdisco · 13/10/2012 15:55

Another vote for Breaking Bad. Absolutely brilliant TV.

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 13/10/2012 15:55

And have you watched Mad Men? Also fabulous.

JessePinkman · 13/10/2012 15:58

Breaking Bad.

SJ47 · 13/10/2012 16:05

Damages with Glenn Close
Boardwalk Empire

But my fave is Band of Brothers. World War 2 drama, so compelling. Lots of famous faces in it too (David Schwimmer, Damien Lewis, Dexter Fletchter...). Tom Hanks was involved in making it (I think...! Starting to doubt myself as I type). It's based on true stories, with interviews with the soldiers that are still surviving. The music is awesome too.

DoubleMum · 13/10/2012 16:12

Game of Thrones for me.

wildpoppy · 13/10/2012 18:10

Am very tempted by breaking bad.

What's brothers and sisters?

Ephiny · 13/10/2012 18:15

I've enjoyed Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire.

Game of Thrones has been described as The Sopranos in Middle Earth :). It's epic fantasy with lots of political intrigue, maybe worth a try even if fantasy isn't usually your thing.

Justified is pretty good too.
