Help! 3yo DD is convinced she is getting a Barbie for Christmas

Was v pleased with self for getting DD's Christmas presents sorted early this year. She doesn't have many dolls but likes to play with them and is always talking about ballet these days, so got her this ballerina doll.

Anyway over the last few weeks she has started going on and on about getting a Barbie for Christmas. She is convinced that is what Santa is going to bring, even though I have been very noncomittal and even said I didn't think Santa could get Barbie this year. She mentions it several times a day. I don't particularly like Barbie but am resigned to the fact that she may end up with one eventually. But surely age three is a bit young?

Not sure what to do really. Am a bit worried that she will be really upset about not getting Barbie. But I think two dolls would be overkill.

Any good advice?

A princess type Barbie is not too bad.

I would get a barbie, is it really worth the stress for the sake of a few pounds or get someone else to buy one for her if santa has spent enough.

I am worried that your dd will take on look at that doll and be very sad....

Can you gift it to somebody else? Return it?

Barbie could be the other dolls little sister, the imaginative play is endless with more than one doll.

if I could afford the extra toy I would get it, if not I would say something along the lines of well we will see maybe next year or birthday if fc doesnt. My dd wants every thing and changes her mind by the hour, she hasnt yet been disapointed, if I didnt crack at the last minute.

If its the feminist idea of barbie then If i where you assess your ideals and values and consider if it is worth the compromise or not. I would, I dont buy into nthe whole barbie and princessess corupting our children if they are reciving a balanced message.

My dd1 was three last year and got a barbie, one of the really cheap ones with a couple of outfits that cost a quid each, and she absolutley loved it, has been seriously played with. It's not a huge expense, was just a stocking filler really. I don't think it would be overkill to get two dolls really, unless they were both all singing, all dancing 60 quid a pop type things.

My DD was given Barbies aged 3. She loved them. The cheapest ones are about 7e here - I was surprised how cheap they were.

whats wrong with barbie? my dd age 2 and half loves barbies i kept both my older girls stuff in attic (they are 11 & 12) and got it all out a few months ago there are boxes and boxes of it and she plays for ages with it all! if its a money issue you can pick up a cheap barbie at a couple of pounds or go to charity shop there are always tons in them.

or wait till nearer Christmas she might change her mind again my dds has changed loads she started off wanting an Orange!! yes! then on a call to her aunt she out of the blue said Santa is getting her nails done and make-up and her hair dyed pink! lol now shes asking for a car and still the hair dye lol.

Could you perhaps play wall-to-wall ballet music from now until Christmas?
Have the ballet on television.
Talk about ballet steps, or costumes quite a lot.
Read ballet stories (angelina ballerina).

Ha ha, lemon curd ! The doll is a bit, erm, earnest, I give you that.
(I love lemon curd actually)

So it looks like I'll be getting princess Barbie tomorrow...! Oh well. At least I held out till she was three...

My own reasons for not liking Barbie much probably stem from my own childhood as I had Sindy who I was convinced was more, ahem, wholesome than Barbie. Stupid really - if Sindies were still around I'd probably have no qualms getting her one!

I really don't like those Corelle dolls.... odd looking things with disproportionate heads.

Barbies are harmless, and lots are quite cheap. Most of dd's cost less than é10, the most expensive one I've bought her came in at é17 for the one with the dogs.

A girl isn't going to turn into a mindless bimbo just because she owns a Barbie.... the way she's brought up will dictate that.

My dd is just 3 and has asked for a barbie. It did make me wince but she's been so insistent i've got her one. She wanted the one where you colour its hair with pens nooooooo wayyyy. So i got one with clip in extensions. And i gave in because i remembered getting sindy at age 3 after an operation and i adored her.

I'd go for the barbie because surely the whole point of these dolls is to be able to dress them up. The ballerina doll doesn't look like it would fit easy to obtain outfits.

I started buying DD's presents in september and Thought I was all sorted. Ive since bought so many more things that iv'e seen or things that she has mentioned.

DD1 is 3 and loves ballet too. She's been having lessons for a year now. I bought her this Ballerina Barbie which has moveable feet to do the pointy toes.

I got mine in the Sainsburys sale and it was only £3 so its going in her stocking form Santa.

And i still have all my old barbies at my mums. I did look into the variousbbarbies. This year she is an architect, but you can also get paediatric doctor, computer programmer or the like. She's more high flying than sindy for sure. When she's not princessing.

I'd take back the ballet doll and buy the Barbie. I can see where you're coming from re the whole long neck, short feet and absurd boobs but little girls love them and you have harder battles to pick no?

I had Sindy too, there was a whole Sindy vs Barbie debate a while back. My own feeling is that Barbie is trashy whilst Sindy is head girl.
