He is really hard to buy for and has asked for a dvd boxset with no clues as to which one. He likes (and already has) the sopranos, 24, dexter, true blood, band of brothers, ultimate force (!), rome, family guy, my name is earl, and deadwood.
we borrowed the wire and west wing.
I was thinking of the killing, but danish or us version, and not sure if there is enough action.
Any other ideas anyone?

I'm told The Killing is very good. I love Dexter and am considering Bones for someone else who likes it. Has he seen Firefly? I only recently saw it and it is very good.

orienteerer · 17/11/2011 21:31

Wallander
Dads Army, very funny however often you watch it.

MonkeyJuice · 17/11/2011 21:34

I heard the danish version was the better, though I've not watched the killing.
I was going to suggest the sopranos...
Would he like shameless?

nancy75 · 17/11/2011 21:35

Did he like the wire? if he did generation kill is by the same people and is very good (not te type of thing i usially like but I thought Dp & I both thought it was excellent) Treme is also supposed to be good. For something a little more light hearted Six feet under is brilliant

Atomant · 17/11/2011 21:37

Mad Men? Bit like sopranos in that it's character driven rather than event driven. It's good.
Saw the US killing which was good but heard Danish version is better.

bunnybunyip · 17/11/2011 21:38

thanks, firefly looks interesting. I think I would like wallander but again worried whether it isn't fast moving, action packed etc enough for dh. Bones also intruiging, never heard of it before.

THE WIRE!!!

my husband loves the sopranos. and apparently the wire tops it!

PotteringAlong · 17/11/2011 21:41

My DH loves blue bloods (and has lots of the stuff your DH has)

mrsmplus3 · 17/11/2011 21:41

just saw hes seen the wire.

Rome? we loved that actually.

mrsmplus3 · 17/11/2011 21:42

modern family? the inbetweeners?

moragbellingham · 17/11/2011 21:43

The Shield was brilliant.
I thought the Wire was better but have found nothing comes close. The Killing (Danish version) is different but still good - and better than the US one. Am currently watching Braquo on FX.

reckoner · 17/11/2011 21:43

the pacific

bunnybunyip · 17/11/2011 21:43

to be honest we both found the wire a bit hardgoing; with 2 small kids we never had enough time to commit to it so we gave up after a couple of episodes, hopefully to return to it when we have a bit more time to devote to it.
Mad men; I like it but far too slow burning for dh and not enough blood and guts.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I've gone from no idea to too much choice!

MangoBrain · 17/11/2011 21:46

Plenty of action, blood and guts from the start...

mrsmplus3 · 17/11/2011 21:48

i couldnt get into wire either, far too slow for me but he loved it.

mrsmplus3 · 17/11/2011 21:48

mrsmplus3 · 17/11/2011 21:50

Tikkabillajive · 17/11/2011 22:10

The Danish version of The Killing is great (haven't seen the US version).

But I'd second the recommendation of Modern Family, it is SO funny.
