I am usually very organised but this year I just can't be arsed A friend just called and said fancy xmas shopping tomorrow so am taking that as an opportunity!

LeBOF · 14/11/2011 15:55

WHY ISN'T this in Christmas?

LordAlconleighsEntrenchingTool · 14/11/2011 15:56

I do the vast majority (presents, not food shopping) on Christmas Eve.

There is a lovely atmosphere in the shops, it is very quiet in comparison to the weekends before Christmas, and lots of the stuff is on sale ready for Boxing Day. Debenhams is a good one in this regard - I normally avoid the shop but it is a veritable treasure trove on Christmas Eve because half the stuff has 20% off or whatever.

I have bought DD's present this year, but I got it months ago as it cost nearly a grand.

KatMumsnet · 14/11/2011 15:57

Hi - We're going to move this to the 'Christmas' topic, as we think it's the best place for it.

sweetheart · 14/11/2011 16:10

Am I the only person waiting for my Christmas bonus?

I've brought a couple of very small bits but the majority of the shopping has to wait until November pay day when our bonuses get paid. Then it will be a mad dash round the shops, esp as Dec is the month most of our family birthday's fall in too!

pranma · 14/11/2011 18:04

I do stockings for everyone [Hawkin's Bazaar is excellent] and collect stuff as I see it.I put it all into carrier bags then dh and I get it all out a couple of days before Christmas and divide it up.I do one stocking for each adult couple to share and one for each child.Dh does mine and I do his-stockings are the best bit for me.

whomovedmychocolate · 14/11/2011 18:20

Normally done by September but have moved house, lost the entire present cupboard contents and now have to start again Hmm

happybubblebrain · 14/11/2011 19:02

I've only done about a third of it, but I have quite a few days off work leading up to Christmas so I've easily got enough time to do the rest. I bought cards, crackers etc last January.

perceptionreality · 14/11/2011 19:22

In the past I've been one of those who rushes around on Christmas Eve but I don't want to do that any more now that I've got 3 children and two have their birthdays at Christmas.

I live in a town where the selection of stuff available is rubbish so I do most of my Christmas shopping online. If I leave it too late, stuff has sold out.

This year I have noticed that the prices of things change from week to week - what is that about?? For example, I bought a Baby Annabell which cost £22.50 two weeks ago. Today it has shot up to £55! Very odd and other items the same.

2gorgeousboys · 14/11/2011 19:31

I love, love, love Christmas but or me it should all be done in December so decs go up the first weekend in December and then the shopping starts. I have been known to do the lot on 20th December in one concentrated, lovely day with a few stops for festive refreshments. This year DH and I are going to have a day shopping together and I'll probably have a few other trips to add to it.

I love christmas shopping when the lights are up, carols playing etc and would hate to get it all done by Easter or over the internet - somehow it takes something away from the excitment for me.

Also the last few years I've found things really reduced in the couple of weeks before Christmas and saved myself a fortune Grin

OhYouBadBadkitten · 14/11/2011 19:36

me :( I know its several weeks away yet but apart from making a cake at half term I've done nothing at all - I can't get beyond 'its 5 weeks before the holidays and I've 30 billion things to do before then that arent even Christmas related'

Please can we all agree to postpone it a bit. Til after the january sales would be really good.

OhYouBadBadkitten · 14/11/2011 19:38

I need a plan. or someone to organise me - someone who can just magically sort it out. I dont even know whether we are going to have guests or not. aaargh.

TeaOneSugar · 14/11/2011 19:49

I'm nearly done, I've got an order coming from Amazon on Wednesday and a few bits to get when me and DH have our christmas shopping day out next week, and dd's bike to pick up nearer the time - I ordered it and paid the deposit at the weekend.

I've still got cards to get for immediate family, and close friends, which I find one of the worse bits.

It's dd's birthday before Christmas, so I need to get everything I've bought her out at some point and decide what's for her birthday and what's for Christmas, and then panic that I've bought too much.

ThePsychicSatsuma · 14/11/2011 19:54

Ive done about a quarter. Very tight money wise, so putting a lot of thought into gifts that'll be useful
HATE the rush panic spree round the shops, so Amazon is getting most of my money.

Have picked some lovely diaries as adult gifts, just check the size so you don't end up with a tiny weeny useless one.

Also getting marble-run toys for many nieces/nephews and kids umbrellas/socks/clothes etc., stuff that people actually need

won't wrap til later in December, if I wrap too early I forget what I've bought and mix stuff up

ThePsychicSatsuma · 14/11/2011 19:55

ohyoubadkitten

get a lovely A4 pad and a pen.
glass of wine
feet up

write plan.

card list
gift list
guest list
food list
xmas eve / xmas day / boxing day plans

Smile
ThePsychicSatsuma · 14/11/2011 19:57

agree 2gorgeousboys

there are pre-xmas bargains to be found if you hold your nerve and have back up ideas for if stuff gets sold out.

2gorgeousboys · 14/11/2011 20:05

The only thing satsuma is if someone wants a specific gift - like 3 years ago when DS1 wanted a DS. I had to buy early as they were selling out everywhere.

kellestar · 14/11/2011 21:51

DD's first birthday a week before christmas... just finished getting that sorted and need to start on the christmas lists. I have made a few things already, but really struggling for my nephew who is 2.8 and loves tractors and cars and boy things, but has too many already and don't want to spend more than a tenner... any ideas. Neice is having a lovely usbourne colouring book, new pens and a book token.

I need an evening on my own to make the cards, DH always forgets something important on the night's I plan a glitterfest so I end up helping him out.

Normally I am uber organised and in previous years I'm done in October.

kipperandtiger · 14/11/2011 23:24

No, too early. Advent (Nov 27 this year) is a good enough time to start, else one would burn out. With the exception of the odd bargain spotted in sales that you know someone would like. (Bought DS's gift in July!) Still enjoying autumn leaves and not-quite-freezing days.....

kipperandtiger · 14/11/2011 23:26

kellestar - how about a jigsaw puzzle with a picture of a tractor or vehicle? Early Learning Centre and Orchard Toys have a few examples. Less than 10 quid, definitely.

SharonGless · 14/11/2011 23:28
