Am being a bit disingenuous because I haven't thought of much for my 7 year old ds yet. So far I've got him a Star Wars 2012 calendar (he is always asking how many days until Christmas / his birthday / next holiday / school holidays etc) and a lego kit. Am pondering if there are any decent new Wii games out.....

What about you?

Honestly IMO remote control toys are usually a mistake - they never keep DCs interest and break at the drop of a hat. Is that just me?

Outsideperspective · 13/11/2011 15:21

CandC - my ds has a week to get his full 12 month quota of presents. From the 26/12 he's planning what he'll get next year. So for example if skylanders is better with more characters, bless him he'll make a note and wait for next December to get to the other parts of the game.

So I'd better get someone to get him some more now Grin

Outsideperspective · 13/11/2011 15:22

Remote controls on the ground are always well loved in this household.

Remote controls in the air are always broken during the first flight.

Hoping that airswimmers dispel this myth!

Carrotsandcelery · 13/11/2011 15:32

Outside I can see your problem - well your ds's problem. Yes, you maybe should get him an extra pack, unless dh has a birthday later in the year and he could get some for his birthday Grin.

I thought November was a tricky time for ds to have a birthday but dh, dsil and dniece are all December so they have to pack all their asks into a small window too.

DilysPrice · 13/11/2011 16:22

Possibly your DS needs to get an Amazon voucher from someone outsider?

Outsideperspective · 13/11/2011 20:29

For some reason known only to my bizarre family and friends they refuse to give vouchers, as they prefer to give a physical gift. I'd give vouchers to everyone (actually I'd give universal vouchers (hard cash Wink) if I could)!

Outsideperspective · 13/11/2011 20:31

Good point about dh, yes he could be used for relevant sharing games, although in fairness he doesn't tend to get presents from anyone bar me.

Carrotsandcelery · 13/11/2011 20:36

Aww poor dh - I am sure your ds will be delighted to receive some extra characters for Christmas Grin

I was out scouring the shops today and discovered that Knex do mario kart "lego" sets. There is a marion one and a yoshi one. I saw them in Forbidden Planet but I imagine they are available on the internet.

They also had Mario ds cases, Mario ds stylus pens, mario key rings, various plush Mario related toys (I felt obliged to buy Bowser Blush), Mario calendars and small plastic mario figures. I didn't buy all of these things but thought it might help those, like ourselves, living with Mario obsessed children.

I also saw a pack of cards in Waterstones, I think they were Usborne ones, of optical illusions. Ds is fascinated by optical illusions so they caught my eye.

Hawkins Bazaar and Paperchase had little pots of what looks like some sort of play doh or putty with alien/monster eyes and limbs that can be stuck in the blob. They were £6 so quite expensive for what they were but they looked good fun.

They also had snaps for 50p a box. I wasn't sure if these were a good idea or not.

I will try to remember what else I saw.

I love this thread....I started one today looking for inspiration and carrotsandcelery linked me here!! Thank you :)

DS has too much Lego now, so that's off the agenda! I ordered ELC Tower of Doom which arrived today, but my mum told me it was too young??? He has really enjoyed learning about Vikings this term at school so thought it would be a winner??! What do you think?

He loves science so maybe the Build your Own Robot would be good?

The only things he has asked for are Sonic Generations XBox, Plants vs Zombies characters, Skylanders (what is this?), k'nex roller coaster.

It's tough this year...I'm usually full of ideas and spend far too much money!!

Carrotsandcelery · 19/11/2011 21:43

Hello again Dawnus - I am glad you found us.

Ds got Skylanders for his birthday this month. It is a wii game ( I think it is available for other consoles too so probably for the xbox) that comes with what they call a portal (really a little platform a little like a tree stump). The starter pack also comes with 3 characters. The player puts the character on the portal and can then play as that character in the game. When they need a different character they take the one on the portal off and put another one on. They can play with a friend, with 2 characters on the portal. Ds and dh love it. I haven't been allowed a go yet Sad

I am sure there is Viking Playmobil which might be appealing to him. here

The Knex roller coaster looks great btw. It would be too tricky for ds but he is only just 7.

allagory · 19/11/2011 21:48

Harry Potter Lego Castle ..100 pounds [faints]

Dawnus · 19/11/2011 22:00

oooo just had a look at the John Adams Hot Wites kit...he'd love that :D

Would Playmobil Viking set be better than Tower of Doom with figures/dragons? we've never bought Playmobil....he was always obsessed with Lego :o

Thanks
Carrotsandcelery · 19/11/2011 22:05

How does he play Dawnus? Does he enjoy the building of the stuff or does he enjoy the imaginative play side more? Playmobil is more for the imaginative play side of things although there is a building element of sorts.

Carrotsandcelery · 19/11/2011 22:06

I don't want to make you cry Dawnus but I just found these Grin

Dawnus · 19/11/2011 22:30

hahaha, I love the stuff, but my house can take no more!

he loves building things....but all of the Lego sets he has had are now in pieces and in 3 big boxes under his bed, rarely played with Shock

he plays with his tank and army people now and then....so I suppose a bit of both Hmm

Carrotsandcelery · 20/11/2011 10:52

If he is enjoying a tank and army people he would probably like Viking playmobil but you know him better than me.

My ds has just built a Bowser's castle out of a cardboard box and is using a combination of his little Mario figures and his Mario soft toys to act out the rescue of Princess Peach. It is a real shame they don't do more proper Mario toy sets - they would make a fortune.

mrsmplus3 · 20/11/2011 11:19

anything lego!

transformers, moshi monsters, cars, nerf gun stuff...

moaninlisa · 20/11/2011 14:42

Lego sets - think one is a Harry Potter and one Star Wars
Complete works of Roald Dahl -bargain form a book club
New bike
HarryPotter last two DVDS
Merlin series 1 and 2 DVDS
Grandparents are buying i pod and wii game.

other bits -joules slipper socks, chocolate of course.

Carrotsandcelery · 20/11/2011 18:40

We are considering getting ds a video camera as his big gift as he is very keen to start making mini films. He is in a drama group and loves it so it all seems to go together. He also loves watching the creations of other little boys on youtube (mostly involving mario toys).

kikidee · 20/11/2011 23:28

I posted a bit further up the thread but DS hadn't written his list at that point. He now has and, although there's too much on it and he can't have it all, I thought I would add it to the thread for ideas for others.

Lego Harry Potter - smaller Hogwarts set, Hagrid's Hut, Quidditch Match

Moshi Monsters - new DS game, DS accessory pack, tin of gold Moshlings and Moshling value pack and Moshling treehouse

Lego Harry Potter - Years 1-4 for Wii

Gross Science set

Horrid Practical Jokes set

Dr Who - Dalek Factory, Cyberman Chamber, Cybermen army, Tardis mini set

I've also got him some books.

myron · 21/11/2011 00:31

Hot Wires Kit from Argos is now £35 with the extra 15% off with a £40 spend.

ChinaInYourHands · 22/11/2011 12:31

Does anyone know what the Moshi Monsters new DS game is like? It's so new there's no reviews anywhere.
Also, thanks in general for this thread, I am getting so many ideas!!
