We need a really good board game - any ideas?

I think Trivial Pursuit, Pictionary, Headbands etc. have lost their allure through over- use. We will be staking our chocolate money on pontoon and poker but it would be good to have a new board game which will keep me and DH + sons aged 20 and 17, girlfriend 16, and odd visitors happily occupied. We don't mind being silly if there is anything aimed at a much younger age group that might have us ROFL.

Pass the Bomb is really good fun.

anchovies · 19/10/2011 16:08

We like articulate and rapidough. Also Logo is quite good fun but can be a bit easy.

tummytickler · 19/10/2011 19:01

I agree with Logo - we had friends over for supper recently and we broke tradition (we always play Yahtzee with them after supper) and played Logo - it was really fun!

mogs0 · 19/10/2011 19:04

Logo is on offer at Tesco at the moment - £15 instead of £32.

We also like Rumikub.

I love board games! My favorites are Settlers of Catan and Dixit.

LadyInPink · 19/10/2011 19:15

Ticket to ride is a great game also Agricola. The card game Magic is also a fab game.

We love Rumikub, Yahtzee, Scrabble, the Yes/No game, Pass the bomb and Monopoly too.

PandaG · 19/10/2011 19:17

Quirkle. think it says for up to 5, but we have played it with 6 or 7 players with no problem. Is a good game for adults, but we play it with younger DC too, for about 7 upwards.

PandaG · 19/10/2011 19:18

agree with Ticket to Ride, also like Settlers - you'd need an extension set as well if you want tot play with more than 4, is a game wher you need to cooperate a bit. Very different to the games you mention.

VivaLeBeaver · 19/10/2011 19:21

UNO

rachyconks · 19/10/2011 19:22

It has to be scattagories! Best Xmas game EVER! Grin

wheredidiputit · 19/10/2011 19:24

Pictureka is a fun game for all ages.

ChippyMinton · 19/10/2011 19:30

Mexican Train dominoes. Played it with friends in the USA, it's really good fun.

ShipsBat · 19/10/2011 19:47

Rapidough!

tummytickler · 19/10/2011 19:50

Tell Me is really fun too, with a table of drunk (or silly!) adults! Hard to play at a mixed table of children and adults though!

LillianGish · 19/10/2011 19:50

Another vote for Scattegories (though personally I think Monopoly is hard to beat and I'm also quite partial to Cluedo).

Absolute Balderdash - it's brilliant.

scrappydappydoo · 19/10/2011 19:54

I haven't played it but there's a lego version of pictionary called creationary which looks fun

seeker · 19/10/2011 19:54

UNO. And if you get the automatic card chucked outer thing it's even more fun.

There's a Cranium that's good, but I can't remember which one.

higgle · 19/10/2011 19:57

Wow, what a lot of answers! I'll be checking these out, and getting one, Pass the Bomb sounds good. Tham you.

OP posts:
PandaG · 19/10/2011 19:59

really don't recommend creationary. the idea is good, but the things to make are so hard it takes forever for someone to make a model in enough detail to make it guessable, amnd the rest of you have given up the will to live.

AndiMac · 19/10/2011 20:17

I have a quick-fire version of Charades that's pretty fun to play with a crowd. It's called Guesstures. www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=guesstures+game&tag=googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=7880349169&ref=pd_sl_8i9ln4lcda_b The beauty of it would be that the concept is quick to learn and therefore quick to start playing.

If you are serious about board games, Settlers of Catan is a great game, but it does require a fair amount of investment of time to figure out how to play it, but once you do that it will be fun to play for a very long time.

ImOldGreeeeeg · 19/10/2011 20:21

Cranium is a winner for me, you have to draw, act scenes, make play-doh models, spell and answer general questions. It's always good for a laugh

tassisssss · 19/10/2011 20:23

We like rummikub and phase 10 (though the latter's cards not board but still!)

scrappydappydoo · 19/10/2011 20:26

Oh Panda - that is disappointing - I saw it and thought it looked really good.

Ragwort · 19/10/2011 20:28

Rummikub must be the best game ever - my absolute favourite Smile; also agree re: Mexican Train dominoes, we bought ours back from the States.

Sorry is a fun game too, don't see it much over here.
