Christmas food bill!

Blimey.

Just done my online shopping order for food for Xmas week. Shopping for six of us (four adults, two children), enough to have nice meals and munchies from 23rd-27th/28th-ish, plus a little bit of drink / snacks for anyone who might pop in.

It's come to £250, not including wine (but including sherry, port and the turkey / ham).

Is this normal?

I don't remember spending this much last year.

Mine has come to £165, but we have not finished and will probably add alot more to the basket before delivery!
And we are not hosting Christmas, so do not have to buy turkey. We are buying for me, dh, 4dc and dh's cousin who will stay with us a couple of nights.
tbh I was a bit , and wish it was £100 cheaper

All I can suggest is not even thinking about doing it all in one go.

My mum's approach - much to be recommended I think - was a box in the corner of the garage accumulating things before Christmas or summer holidays. (Only non perishables clearly!)

i normally spend £250 easily each year. and i already have some wine, the meat, loads of chocs and other bits

This is why we buy morrisons saving stamps every week for a year, and then add them to the money off coupons they do each year (where you keep receipts for 5 weeks and get £25 off), so when we do our xmas shop in a couple of weeks it wont feel too bad as we will be saving £125 off total bill.

Last time I did Christmas dinner at home for 14 and spent £260 on food in sainsbury's and another £120 on turkey, I think my parents brought a ham and a side of smoked salmon, my sister spent the same on alcohol.

That covered Christmas day, boxing day and the day after

I try to put but and pieces as and when, but they tend to get eaten (best part of a kilo tin of QS was demolished thanks to being snowed in yesterday/today!)

This year we are going away for Christmas. Far cheaper.

About the same for six here, for 4 days- we've saved so not too shocked thankfully.

Well most pre preapred for us (going to be away and don;t know what preparation facillities we will have available you see).

Could have spent far less had we wanted to, or needed to.

We've just done our shop, was due to be delivered yesterday, after doing it on-line weeks ago (felt very smug with being so organised) but delivery was cancelled, so have been traipsing round the shop today. On-line was going to be £175 (inc delivery) in store cost us £208. No large meat costs, as parents are bringing that, but does include alcohol and trimmings for 7 adults and 3 kids. Glad to see it's not just me that's shocked at the cost of eating at Christmas

It depends if you just buy for the day or for the fortnight surely

£120 on a turkey????!!!!

I have spent just over £100 to cover 4 days. 3 of us on Chrostmas day and 5 of us on Boxing Day. We go on holiday on the 27th. There is no wine in that.

I had a delivery last riday too for £130.

Well, I've spent nearly £300 so far, although to be fair that is for 2 weeks, and we have various sets of people coming, also includes wine!

But that doesn't include any of the meat!! I am quaking in my boots at the thought of how much my butcher's bill is going to be!

just been and spent 110 for 2 adults and 2 dc - am not doing dinner but intend on troffing and not shopping till nearere new year.

Crikey, I've been trying to shave some off my total bill of £150 for the next month's shopping (including xmas, dd2's first birthday and some much needed clothes for dd1). Maybe mine's not too bad after all!

Just done Sainsburys tonight - £200 plus £40 for turkey in Tesco. This is for 9 adults & 5 kids Christmas Day, and visitors Boxing Day. Hideous, isn't it. Thankfully had £30 worth of Sainsbury reward tokens, and used Tesco vouchers towards the turkey.

£250 including wine, two of us Christmas Day but family Boxing Day. I went and took stuff off, then thought sod it and added it back on. And I got champagne and canape nibbles the other week when they were on 3 for 2 at waitrose.

It seems way more expensive than last year.

God this thread has made me feel so much better! I reckon I have very much overspent on presents and was feeling a bit embarrassed reading through the other 'how much have you spent' type threads. BUT have spent about 50 quid on food - it's just me, DP and 2 wee ones who don't care about the food on Christmas Day itself and then we are off to my parents'. Don't feel so bad now!

£135 for a week for 4 adults 2 children.
Not including wine.
Extra £30 for massive turkey from local farmer.
Extra £30 for gammon from another local farmer.
Will prob spend about another £30-40 during this week so total:

up to about £300.

PS £120 on a turkey? Is it dipped in gold?

£250ish here too. Although that does include the 3 bottles of champagne that I put in the basket just to secure the shopping slot a month ago.

I am hoping Waitrose make it here on Thursday. The roads are generally clear so fingers crossed.

If they have to cancel the delivery slot, do they still do the shop for you to just collect in store?

I am a bit sad and have a huge box in the dining room decorated in wrapping paper which we have been putting bits and pieces into it for weeks! It is like a giant hamper now!!
